Book Description :

The past two decades have seen rapid development of micro-/nanotechnologies with the integration of chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemistry, and life sciences to form bio-MEMS or lab-on-chip devices that help us perform cellular analysis in a complex micro-/nanoflluidic environment with minimum sample consumption and have potential biomedical applications. To date, few books have been published in this field, and researchers are unable to find specialized content. This book compiles cutting-edge research on cell manipulation, separation, and analysis using microfluidics and bio-MEMS devices. It illustrates the use of micro-robots for biomedical applications, vascularized microfluidic organs-on-a-chip and their applications, as well as DNA gene microarray biochips and their applications. In addition, it elaborates on neuronal cell activity in microfluidic compartments, microvasculature and microarray gene patterning, different physical methods for drug delivery and analysis, micro-/nanoparticle preparation and separation in a micro-/nanofluidic environment, and the potential biomedical applications of micro-/nanoparticles. This book can be used by academic researchers, especially those involved in biomicrofluidics and bio-MEMS, and undergraduate- and graduate-level students of bio-MEMS/bio-nanoelectromechanical systems (bio-NEMS), biomicrofluidics, biomicrofabricatios, micro-/nanofluidics, biophysics, single-cell analysis, bionanotechnology, drug delivery systems, and biomedical micro-/nanodevices. Readers can gain knowledge of different aspects of microfluidics and bio-MEMS devices; their design, fabrication, and integration; and biomedical applications. The book will also help biotechnology-based industries, where research and development is ongoing in cell-based analysis, diagnosis, and drug screening.

Book Description :

Sales of U.S. chemical sensors represent the largest segment of the multi-billion-dollar global sensor market, which includes instruments for chemical detection in gases and liquids, biosensors, and medical sensors. Although silicon-based devices have dominated the field, they are limited by their general inability to operate in harsh environments faced with factors such as high temperature and pressure. Exploring how and why these instruments have become a major player, Semiconductor Device-Based Sensors for Gas, Chemical, and Biomedical Applications presents the latest research, including original theoretical and experimental work. It also explains how these investigations have translated into applications and products. Written by experts in the field, the chapters review cutting-edge progress on semiconductor and nanomaterial-based sensors. An excellent introduction to the subject, this book is also an outstanding reference for those working on different sensor applications. It addresses various subfields, including: GaN-based sensor arrays for quick and reliable medical testing Optical sensors Wireless remote hydrogen sensing systems MOS-based, thin-film, and nanowire-based sensors The wide-bandgap semiconductor sensors discussed in this book offer many advantages as replacements for silicon-based sensors, including their high chemical resistance, high-temperature operation, and blue and ultraviolet optoelectronic behaviors. Although assays exist for biomedical detection, they are limited by various factors. Nanomaterial devices, such as the sensors examined in this book, are currently the best option for moving toward fast, label-free, sensitive, and selective multiple-detection systems for biological and medical sensing applications. Providing sufficient background information and technical detail, this is an excellent resource for advanced level undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in gas, chemical, biological, and medical sensors.

Book Description :

Master's Thesis from the year 2002 in the subject Electrotechnology, grade: 1.0 (A), University of Applied Sciences Berlin (FB1), 49 entries in the bibliography, language: English, comment: CD not included in downloadfile., abstract: Common test standards for evaluating the hermeticity of microsystem packages are unsuitable for small MEMS-devices. It is the task of this Master thesis to create a universal test device to measure and to compare the hermeticities of different wafer-level packaging concepts, especially for RF MEMS devices. Resonator structures were found to be most suitable to measure low pressures and low pressure changes over time, due to the high sensitivity of their Q-value to the pressure in the cavity. The resonators are electrostatically actuated by using a novel coupling concept of the excitation voltage. The detection of the resonator movement is done by laser-interferometry. Sensors fulfilling the specific demands were designed, simulated and fabricated in the cleanroom. The fabrication process is based on SOI (Silicon On Insulator) wafers. Finally, the sensors were evaluated and characterized. A suitable resonator with a length of 500 um reaches a Q-factor of 8070, at an ambient pressure of 0,02 mbar, and a resonance frequency of 36329 Hz. The sensitivity of the Q-value to pressure change is 4000 %/mbar at 0,02 mbar. This work was carried out within the Summit RF MEMS project, a collaborative project involving Ericsson, the Royal Institute of Technology-S3, Acreo and Saab Ericsson Space.
