Characterization of material properties is critical for understanding the material's mechanical behavior and design performance under its operating conditions. This work is aimed at the development of nondestructive evaluation techniques for in-situ monitoring of nuclear reactor plant components. The feasibility of different electromagnetic methods was investigated to identify the most effective monitoring methods for two baseline damage types that simulate degradation mechanisms relevant to nuclear reactor plants, namely high-temperature low-cycle fatigue damage and thermal/radiation embrittlement. The five electromagnetic materials characterization methods tested in this work included magnetic susceptibility, thermoelectric power, eddy current, alternating current potential drop, and electromagnetic acoustic inspection. The results indicate that shear wave birefringence measurements conducted by non-contacting electromagnetic acoustic transducers are probably the most sensitive to high-temperature low-cycle fatigue in austenitic steel, though it is recommended that the feasibility of electric conductivity birefringence measurements using eddy current and alternating current potential drop methods be also further investigated. As for nondestructive monitoring of embrittlement in ferritic steels, the very limited study indicates that thermoelectric power inspection is the most viable candidate.

Traditionally the vast majority of materials characterization techniques have been destructive, e. g. , chemical compositional analysis, metallographic determination of microstructure, tensile test measurement of mechanical properties, etc. Also, traditionally, nondestructive techniques have been used almost exclusively for the detection of macroscopic defects, mostly cracks, in structures and devices which have already been constructed and have already been in service for an extended period of time. Following these conventional nondestructive tests, it has been common practice to use somewhat arbitrary accept-reject criteria to decide whether or not the structure or device should be removed from service. The present unfavorable status of a large segment of industry, coupled with the desire to keep structures in service well past their original design life, dramatically show that our traditional approaches must be drastically modified if we are to be able to meet future needs. The role of nondestructive characterization of materials is changing and will continue to change dramatically. It has become increasingly evident that it is both practical and cost effective to expand the role of nondestructive evaluation to include all aspects of materials' production and application and to introduce it much earlier in the manufacturing cycle. In fact, the recovery of a large portion of industry from severe economic problems is dependent, in part, on the successful implementation of this expanded role.

Finding and slzmg cracks and other crack-like discontinuities has been the center of attention for scientists and engineers developing and using nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technology. However, with advanced mate rials being "engineered" and used in critical structural components, a new for NDE has emerged. Whereas many traditional engineering materi challenge als fail due to the initiation and self-similar propagation of a crack, reinforced composite materials degrade and fail in a manner more analogously to the collapse of a structure. Consequently the NDE of such materials involves assessing the combined effect of the material's damaged condition rather than identifying and sizing single critical imperfection. In 1979 Alex Vary, seeking to address the challenge confronting the NDE of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials began work on a new method of materials characterization. Focusing on the problem of evaluating graphite fiber reinforcedl epoxy laminated plates; Vary used a piezoelectric transducer to excite a mechanical disturbance in a plate and, with a sensi tive piezoelectric transducer monitored the disturbance on the same surface of the plate. (Placing the transducers on the same surface was primarily for practical purpose but their displacement in the direction of anticipated service load was of fundamental significance!) To quantify this observation, he counted the number of excursions, of the resulting electrical signal, above a arbitrary voltage threshold; a procedure frequently used for acoustic emission signal analysis.
