Book Description :

Maraging steels are high-strength steels combined with good toughness. They are used particularly in aerospace and tooling applications. Maraging refers to the ageing of martensite, a hard microstructure commonly found in steels. Maraging steels: modelling of microstructure, properties and applications covers the following topics: Introduction to maraging steels; Microstructure of maraging steels; Mechanical properties of maraging steels; Thermodynamic calculations for quantifying the phase fraction and element partition in maraging systems and precipitation hardening steels; Quantification of phase transformation kinetics in maraging steels; Quantification of age hardening in maraging steels; Maraging steels and overageing; Precipitation hardening stainless steel; Applications of artificial neural network on modelling maraging steel properties. With its distinguished authors, Maraging steels: modelling of microstructure, properties and applications is a standard reference for industry and researchers concerned with maraging steels and modelling as well as users of maraging steels in the aerospace and tooling sectors. The book includes both conventional maraging steels and precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steels. Provides an overview of maraging steels including microstructure and mechanical properties Reviews thermodynamic calculations for quantifying the phase fraction and element partition in maraging steels Includes chapters on the quantification of phase transformation kinetics and age hardening in maraging steels

Book Description :

The third in a series of meetings to review the technical status of the high-nickel maraging steels was held on July 24 and 25, 1963, at the Biltmore Hotel in Dayton, Ohio. Again, the purpose of this review was to discuss the technical progress which has been made with the maraging steels, not only since the previous review but also in the sum total. The ultimate objective was to determine the pertinent properties of these steels, to delineate the optimum techniques for processing and fabricating them, to define the important problems to be expected in using them, and to identify means to eliminate or circumvent these problems. During the four sessions, which occupied two full days, 24 technical presentations were made by members of a number of Government agencies and facilites, industrial concerns and research organizations. Abstracts of the presentations are recorded in the Appendix. In the summary section, highlights and inferences of the presentations made during the review are reported.

Book Description :

Since the combination of tensile properties and toughness that can be obtained with the maraging steels is higher than can be achieved with other steels by simple heat treatments, there is considerable interest in using the maraging steels for critical components such as rocket motor cases, pressure vessels, and aircraft forgings. This report includes information on the tensile, compressive, shear, bearing, dynamic modulus, impact, bend, fatigue, creep, and rupture properties of the 18 per cent nickel maraging steels and on the effect of temperature on these properties. Data for the properties of sheet, bar, and forgings, as well as data illustrating the effect of cold rolling, variation in the heat treatment, and elevated-temperature exposure also are presented. Data on the effect of specimen orientation, which are also included, indicate that the ductility and toughness of specimens designed to evaluate the properties in the short transverse direction are somewhat lower than in the other directions. The high strength and toughness that can be obtained in the 18 per cent nickel maraging steels make them attractive for certain critical applications that require these properties. The fabrication characteristics, weldability, and simple heat treatment are other advantages of these steels. (Author).

Book Description :

This report resulted from a survey of users and manufacturers of maraging steels, Government agencies, research institutions, and published literature. It presents the technical status of the 18-percent nickel maraging steels in detail and brings together a large body of knowledge with regard to the metallurgical and engineering aspects of maraging steels. Since such steels were first announced in 1959, they have become highly important in aerospace, defense, and industrial work. The requirements of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have given impetus to their development, and research now underway is expected to result in further improvements and applicability. The NASA Office of Technology Utilization sponsored this report as part of its program to disseminate information on technological developments which appear to be useful for general industrial applications.

Book Description :

The fine-scale microstructures of the 18Ni(250) and 18Ni(300) grades of maraging steel have been examined using electron microscopy of thin foils and extraction replicas in conjunction with electron-diffraction and electron-probe analyses of particles extracted from these steels. The microstructure of both steels in the annealed condition consists of small, equiaxed martensite grains containing a high dislocation density but few microtwins. The main source of the strengthening that occurs in these steels during aging is the precipitation of extremely fine particles of intermetallic compounds. The major precipitate, Ni3Mo, appears to nucleate on dislocations, and during the early stages of aging it occurs in the form of ribbons or rods. A second precipitate, which nucleates homogeneously, appears as small spheres in the early stage of aging. The identity of this precipitate is not certain, but indirect evidence suggests that it is Ni3Ti. Upon continued aging, both types of precipitates assume the form of platelets or discs. The softening that occurs in these steels upon overaging is believed to result from the rapid growth of reverted austenite plates and the resolution of precipitate particles in the vicinity of the austenite plates. Book Description :

A study was initiated to compare the forming characteristics of seven experimental maraging steels (yield strengths of 140 to 225 ksi)with those of the present HY-80 submarine-hull steel on the basis of the amount of bending at onset of cracking and the true-strain produced on the tension surface of the bend specimen. The results showed that the 3/8- and 3-in. wide specimens of HY-80 steel and 3/8-in. wide specimens of maraging steels (with 2 exceptions for extremely brittle materials) could be bent flat (part angle of 0 degrees) whereas the 3-in. wide specimens of the maraging steels cracked at part angles greater than 135 degrees. The results indicated that formability comparisons should be made on specimens wide enough so that bending occurs under conditions of plane strain. (Author).
