Book Description :

There is an urgent need for innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable approaches to reduce the tremendous environmental impact of conventional cement and cement-based technologies. Consuming a significantly lower quantity of natural resources than conventional cements, with the added ability to effectively sequestering carbon, magnesia cements offer great potential in this area. Magnesia Cements: From Formulation to Application explores the latest developments in this exciting area, reviewing the unique properties offered by these cements, including superior strength, fire resistance, and exceptional ability to bond to a wide range of aggregates, and highlighting their potential role in making cement production and usage more sustainable. Providing detailed analysis of the chemistry, properties, manufacture, and both traditional and novel applications, Magnesia Cements: From Formulation to Application is ideally suited for materials scientists, cement chemists, ceramicists, and engineers involved with the design, development, application and impact assessment of magnesia cements across both academia and industry. Provides formulary information research into more environmentally friendly cement systems Discusses chemical phase analysis and the impact of formulation Applies analysis and history of global uses to provide support for future environmentally stable industrial, building, and non-building applications

Book Description :

Edwin Eckel's exceptionally detailed volume, published in 1928, presents a wealth of information drawing on his own research as well as the work of all the eminent international authorities in the field of lime mortars and cements. It captures the fascinating development of building materials from the nineteenth century through the first quarter of the twentieth century. Of particular interest is the way in which it chronicles the demise of hydraulic cement, followed by the brief meteoric rise in popularity of natural cements, then subsequently their rapid eclipse by Portland cement. This book will be an invaluable resource not only to everyone involved in conservation of traditional buildings but also those concerned with the early modern buildings constructed from Portland cement. The detailed contents and new introductions by Paul Livesey (UK) and William G. Hime (US) can be viewed on the website.

Book Description :

Excerpt from Properties of Portland Cement Having a High Magnesia Content Further investigations on this subject are needed because Of the failures of mortars and concretes which have been attributed to such cements. The specifications under which cements are usually bought do not demand the making Of test pieces of the material to be tested at late periods'; but high-magnesia cements are gener ally conceded to be able to pass all the requirements demanded of the short-time tests. However, with the hydration Of the com pounds present in such cements it is claimed by some that there is a Slow but gradual increase in volume, which is manifested at late periods by low results for the strength of test pieces and finally by complete disintegration of the materialf While such cements may be satisfactory at early periods and pass the usual specifica tions, there is a strong belief in the minds of many that ultimately they will fail. As this phenomenon Of the large increase in volume accompanying the slow hydration of the constituents in high-magnesia cements can be Observed apparently only at late periods, it is essential to Obtain some. Definite information in regard to this property, if it exists. It might be possible with this infor mation to make definite predictions as to the ultimate behavior of such cements, even though short-time tests should Show them to be satisfactory. This book is designed to be used in an introductory sophomore-level undergraduate course in chemical engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering, chemistry, and/or industrial chemistry. Senior-level students in resource development, soil science, and geology might also find this book useful. In addition, it is our hope that even advanced mathematics-oriented high school seniors might find the material easy to master as well. This book emphasizes concepts, definitions, chemical equations, and descriptions with which some chemical science professionals struggle. It stresses the importance of maintaining uniformly high standards in pure chemical science and manufacturing technology while still keeping in mind that procedures that might seem strange also yield results that prove effective.
