With the advantage of low cost, flexible deployment, and wide coverage as compared to wired communications, wireless communications play an essential role in providing information exchange among the distributed devices in wireless M2M networks. However, an intrinsic problem with wireless communications is that the limited radio spectrum resources may result in unsatisfactory performance in the M2M networks. With the number of M2M devices projected to reach 20 to 50 billion by 2020, there is a critical need to solve the problems related to the design and applications in the wireless M2M networks.In this dissertation work, we study the wireless M2M networks design from three closely related aspects, the wireless M2M communication reliability, efficiency, and Demand Response (DR) control in smart grid, an important M2M application taking the advantage of reliable and efficient wireless communications. First, for the communication reliability issue, multiple factors that affect communication reliability are considered, including the shadowing and fading characteristics of wireless channels, and random network topology. A general framework has been proposed to evaluate the reliability for data exchange in both infrastructure-based single-hop networks and multi-hop mesh networks. Second, for the communication efficiency issue, we study two challenging scenarios in wireless M2M networks: one is a network with a large number of end devices, and the other is a network with long, heterogeneous, and/or varying propagation delays. Media Access Control (MAC) protocols are designed and performance analysis are conducted for both scenarios by considering their unique features.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications is one of the enabling technologies for connecting massive number of devices to the Internet of Things (IoT). M2M communications have different characteristics than human-to-human (H2H) communications. In this work, we propose a scalable, hybrid MAC protocol that will satisfy user quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. We model both periodic and nonperiodic traffic. The proposed MAC protocol organizes transmissions into superframes consisting of a number of frames. A machine is assumed to generate a one or zero packet per its period. The machines have been divided into several types according to their packet generation probabilities. The generated packets are classified into different traffic classes according to their tolerance to packet losses and served by a subframe. Further, each subframe is divided into two sub-periods one serving contention and the other reserved traffic of that traffic class. We formulated an optimization problem that minimizes frame length subject to QoS user requirements. Then, we derived packet loss probability for each class as well as total packet loss probability for the optimization. Formulation resulted in a nonlinear optimization problem, but numerical results show that an LP approximation provides a nearly optimal solution.The work also considered the proposed protocol under user mobility. The packet arrival process under user mobility has been derived. Then the performance of the protocol has been evaluated with the contention service under this arrival process. The contention service with and without packet losses have been considered. A priority queueing mechanism also has been studied for M2M communication. The results of this thesis may be useful in the design of M2M communication system.

The scarcity of bandwidth has always been the main obstacle for providing reliable high data-rate wireless links, which are in great demand to accommodate nowadays and immediate future wireless applications. In addition, recent reports have showed inefficient usage and under-utilization of the available bandwidth. Cognitive radio (CR) has recently emerged as a promising solution to enhance the spectrum utilization, where it offers the ability for unlicensed users to access the licensed spectrum opportunistically. By allowing opportunistic spectrum access which is the main concept for the interweave network model, the overall spectrum utilization can be improved. This requires cognitive radio networks (CRNs) to consider the spectrum sensing and monitoring as an essential enabling process for the interweave network model. Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, which is the basic enabler for the Internet-of-Things (IoT), has emerged to be a key element in future networks. Machines are expected to communicate with each other exchanging information and data without human intervention. The ultimate objective of M2M communications is to construct comprehensive connections among all machines distributed over an extensive coverage area. Due to the radical change in the number of users, the network has to carefully utilize the available resources in order to maintain reasonable quality-of-service (QoS). Generally, one of the most important resources in wireless communications is the frequency spectrum. To utilize the frequency spectrum in IoT environment, it can be argued that cognitive radio concept is a possible solution from the cost and performance perspectives. Thus, supporting numerous number of machines is possible by employing dual-mode base stations which can apply cognitive radio concept in addition to the legacy licensed frequency assignment. In this thesis, a detailed review of the state of the art related to the application of spectrum sensing in CR communications is considered. We present the latest advances related to the implementation of the legacy spectrum sensing approaches. We also address the implementation challenges for cognitive radios in the direction of spectrum sensing and monitoring. We propose a novel algorithm to solve the reduced throughput issue due to the scheduled spectrum sensing and monitoring. Further, two new architectures are considered to significantly reduce the power consumption required by the CR to enable wideband sensing. Both systems rely on the 1-bit quantization at the receiver side. The system performance is analytically investigated and simulated. Also, complexity and power consumption are investigated and studied.Furthermore, we address the challenges that are expected from the next generation M2M network as an integral part of the future IoT. This mainly includes the design of low-power low-cost machine with reduced bandwidth. The trade-off between cost, feasibility, and performance are also discussed. Because of the relaxation of the frequency and spatial diversities, in addition, to enabling the extended coverage mode, initial synchronization and cell search have new challenges for cellular-enabled M2M systems. We study conventional solutions with their pros and cons including timing acquisition, cell detection, and frequency offset estimation algorithms. We provide a technique to enhance the performance in the presence of the harsh detection environment for LTE-based machines. Furthermore, we present a frequency tracking algorithm for cellular M2M systems that utilizes the new repetitive feature of the broadcast channel symbols in next generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems. In the direction of narrowband IoT support, we propose a cell search and initial synchronization algorithm that utilizes the new set of narrowband synchronization signals. The proposed algorithms have been simulated at very low signal to noise ratios and in different fading environments.

The findings suggest significant improvements in radio resource utilisation when serving M2M traffic.

Vehicle tracking by automated machine-to-machine (M2M) communication over cellular wireless networks will be a key component in future "intelligent transport" systems in which existing transport infrastructure is used more efficiently, resulting in reduced traffic congestion, improved fuel efficiency, etc. Furthermore, as transport becomes electrified, M2M communication will enable the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on the electricity distribution network to be managed. In this research, we have implemented a Raspberry Pi based data logging system (DLS) operating over a commercial 4G wireless network. The DLS sends trip information, such as state of charge (SoC) and location of EVs to a remote server at regular intervals. We also address the question of scalability of the wireless DLS, and report both numerical simulations and analytical results showing that up to 250 vehicles can be supported per base station before communication delays and blocking disrupt system operation. Lastly, we implement a neural-network-based intelligent decision-making system to utilise the M2M logged data for charge scheduling and load management of EVs in the power grid.
