Book Description :

Cystic fibrosis used to be thought of as a respiratory and digestive disease, with a uniformly and rapidly fatal outcome. The spectrum of the disease has broadened into the mild atypical case, presenting in middle age, with the potential for complications in virtually every system of the body. In the past few years there has been an explosion of knowledge of the basic science of the defect. The editors have therefore invited the leading scientists and clinicians in the field of cystic fibrosis to describe the recent advances in this disease. Although there are many 'Recent Advances' texts, previous books have been selective in their choice of topics. This book is the first to cover the entire field of this complex disease, and encompasses the rapidly moving topics of the basic molecular and cellular biology as well as the recent multi-system, multi-disciplinary advances in the clinical care of patients. The authors have been charged with writing only about new developments and not to rehash old literature. The bulk of the references is therefore less than five years old. This book addresses all professionals who treat cystic fibrosis and want to have an up-date of new findings in the field, particularly of those outside their immediate specialisation. It will also be useful for basic researchers interested in related scientific areas and the clinical context of their work.

Book Description :

This book discusses occupational health and safety, including occupational policies, legislative acts, and laws for protection of workers. Epidemiology and toxicology are examples of two fields that make contributions to exposure assessments and illuminate the adverse health effects associated with work-related exposures. Among the adverse health outcomes that have been linked with the work environment are cancer, respiratory illness, and reproductive abnormalities. Unintentional injuries are one of the leading causes of work-related morbidity and mortality, but the psychological and social environment can also affect the health of workers by influencing levels of stress and morale. Methods have been developed to reduce exposures to hazards and increase occupational safety through redesign of the work environment, introduction of engineering controls, and limiting exposures to physical, microbial, and chemical agents. --

Asthma in the 21st Century: New Research Advances provides an overview on asthma, with discussions on its heterogeneity, risk factors and their interrelations, and e-health in an aging world based on current research knowledge. The book covers heterogeneity of the disease beyond severe asthma, new risk factors, new diagnoses with climate change, a focus on chemical exposures at home, e-health and links with aging, and notable advances in key areas such as diet and microbiota, the genetics of asthma, and the asthma versus COPD debate. Worldwide, the total number of asthma sufferers is estimated to be ~270 million with an additional 100 million expected to develop asthma by 2025, and asthma is the most common chronic disease among children. There are a number of clinical books available on asthma, but none with much discussion on current scientific findings and new disease understanding. Yet, the concept of asthma has evolved quickly in the past 5–10 years, with many clinicians struggling to keep up with new scientific findings. Offers an overall view of asthma and addresses notable advances in key areas such as diet and the microbiota, the genetics of asthma, and asthma-COPD overlap syndrome Covers hot topics such as heterogeneity of asthma beyond severe asthma, new risk factors, more common complications with climate change, a focus on chemical exposures at home, e-health, and links with frailty in an aging world Provides a deep understanding of a multifactorial, complex, and heterogeneous chronic inflammatory disease known as asthma

The seventh edition of the most authoritative and comprehensive book published on lung function, now completely revised and restructured Lung function assessment is the central pillar of respiratory diagnosis. Most hospitals have lung function laboratories where patients are tested with a variety of physiological methods. The tests and techniques used are specialized and utilize the expertise of respiratory physicians, physiologists, and technicians. This new edition of the classic text on lung function is a theoretical textbook and practical manual in one that gives a comprehensive account of lung function and its assessment in healthy persons and those with all types of respiratory disorder, against a background of respiratory, exercise, and environmental physiology. It incorporates the technical and methodological recommendations for lung function testing of the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society. Cotes' Lung Function, 7th Edition is filled with chapters covering respiratory surveys, respiratory muscles, neonatal assessment, exercise, sleep, high altitude, hyperbaria, the effects of cold and heat, respirable dusts, fumes and vapors, anesthesia, surgery, and respiratory rehabilitation. It also offers a compendium of lung function in selected individual diseases and is filled with more diagrams and illustrative cases than previous editions. The only text to cover lung function assessment from first principles including methodology, reference values, and interpretation Completely re-written in a contemporary style—includes user-friendly equations and more diagrams Covers the latest advances in the treatment of lung function, including a stronger clinical and practical bias and more on new techniques and equipment Keeps mathematical treatments to a minimum Cotes' Lung Function is an ideal guide for respiratory physicians and surgeons, staff of lung function laboratories, and others who have a professional interest in the function of the lungs at rest or on exercise and how it may be assessed. Book Description :

Respiratory infections are among the most common causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. These infections present a special challenge to physicians for several reasons, including of the recent disasters caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and bird and swine influenza, the increase in viral and bacterial resistance to currently available anti-microbial drugs, the increased frequency of new viral lung infections in clinical practice, and the worldwide emergence of deadly drug-resistant forms of TB. For these reasons, it is important for infectious disease specialists to have an overview of emerging respiratory infections.

Book Description :

Advances in molecular biology and toxicology are paving the way for major improvements in the evaluation of the hazards posed by the large number of chemicals found at low levels in the environment. The National Research Council was asked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to review the state of the science and create a far-reaching vision for the future of toxicity testing. The book finds that developing, improving, and validating new laboratory tools based on recent scientific advances could significantly improve our ability to understand the hazards and risks posed by chemicals. This new knowledge would lead to much more informed environmental regulations and dramatically reduce the need for animal testing because the new tests would be based on human cells and cell components. Substantial scientific efforts and resources will be required to leverage these new technologies to realize the vision, but the result will be a more efficient, informative and less costly system for assessing the hazards posed by industrial chemicals and pesticides.

Book Description :

In March 2011, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an environmental activist group, released a questionable report alleging that chemical exposures throughout the country have led to numerous "disease clusters." The group called for far-reaching reforms that would place huge financial burdens on chemical manufacturers and American taxpayers. Accelerated job loss and restrictions or bans on safe and usefulproducts would be the consequences of the misguided concern generated by this (and similar) scientifically flawed warnings. In response, the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH), basing our analysis on well established principles of scientific investigation, critically evaluated the NRDC's purported disease clusters and assessed the depth of the evidence-based support for these claims. This publication is a case-by-case investigation of each of the NRDC's claims. We explain why, with few exceptions, their allegationshave no scientific basis and fly in the face of the conclusions reached by objective governmental public health agencies.

Book Description :

What if the terms "technology" and "the body" did not refer to distinct phenomena interacting in one way or another? What if we understood their relationship as far more intimate - technologies as always already embodied, material bodies as always already technologized? What would it mean, then, to understand the relationship between technology and the body as a relation of indeterminacy? Expanding on the concept of the apparatus of bodily production in the work of Donna Haraway and Karen Barad, Josef Barla explores how material bodies along with their boundaries, properties, and meanings performatively materialize at sites where technological, biological, technoscientific, (bio-)political, and economic forces intra-act.
