Book Description :

NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY BESTSELLER - HAVE NO SHAME **WINNER** GOLD MEDAL, Southern Fiction, READERS' FAVORITE AWARD **FINALIST** Historical Fiction, READERS' FAVORITE AWARD * Book Club Recommendation * Where civil rights and forbidden love collide... The racially-charged prejudice of the deep South forces eighteen-year-old Alison Tillman to confront societal norms--and her own beliefs--when she discovers the body of a hate crime victim, and the specter of forbidden love turns her safe, comfortable world upside down. A meaningful combination of romantic suspense and coming of age at its very best. "This book will resonate with readers who enjoyed Kathryn Stockett's, THE HELP, Julie Kibler's, CALLING ME HOME, John Grisham's, A TIME TO KILL, Sue Monk Kidd's, THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, and Kathleen Grissom's, THE KITCHEN HOUSE." PLEASE NOTE: This book contains TWO versions of this novel. Readers have the option to read with or without the southern dialect in the narrative (two versions, one novel, one purchase). Both versions reflect the exact same story, with the only difference being the style of the narrative. Q&A with author Melissa Foster Q: How is HAVE NO SHAME different from each of your other novels? MF: I write across genres, and HAVE NO SHAME is my first historical fiction novel. But SHAME is also a coming-of-age story, and so much more. HAVE NO SHAME is told in a very soft voice--the voice of the main character, Alison Tillman, and is reflective of her Southern voice. Q: You've said that this story is your most important story to date. Why is that? MF: HAVE NO SHAME was not an easy book to write. Researching and writing this story took me back to the civil rights era--unearthing all of the hate and prejudice of the times, and it was an eye opening experience. In many ways prejudice is still as strong now as it was then; it's just aimed at other areas of society. Alison's realization of the prejudices of society--and even of those she loves--and the strength she shows in how she moves forward is a lesson for all of us. The heart is not color-blind, and although I know this type of prejudice still exists, I feel it's important to give the truth of that era a voice. Q: Is this a stand-alone novel? MF: Yes, this is a stand-alone novel, however, I'm asked often to write a follow-up novel to explore what happened next in the town and with the characters. I'm looking forward to exploring that soon. Q: You offer this book in two formats with one purchase--why is that? MF: Alison's voice came to me as a southern voice in dialogue and in thought, and HAVE NO SHAME is told from Alison's point of view. I felt it was vital to keep her thoughts in her own voice. However, I also realize that readers are passionate about their reading preferences, and because most novels present dialect in only the dialogue, I decided to give readers a choice. Each ebook and each paperback offers both formats: with Southern dialect in the narrative, and without. This has never been done before. SUMMARY Alison Tillman has called Forrest Town, Arkansas home for the past eighteen years. Her mother's Blue Bonnet meetings, her father toiling night and day on the family farm, and the division of life between the whites and the blacks are all Alison knows. The winter of 1967, just a few months before marrying her high school sweetheart, Alison finds the body of a black man floating in the river, and she begins to view her existence with new perspective. The oppression and hate of the south, the ugliness she once was able to avert her eyes from, now demands her attention. When a secretive friendship with a young black man takes an unexpected romantic turn, Alison is forced to choose between her predetermined future, and the dangerous path that her heart yearns for. NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR Melissa Foster is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling and award-winning author. Book Description :

"The Night Side of Dickens looks beyond the public image of Charles Dickens and his works to examine the startling dark side of the novelist's creative powers, the side where images of cannibalism, unbridled passion, and inexorable fate resided. Harry Stone, one of the preeminent Dickens scholars of our generation, has studied the entire Dickens oeuvre, including the previously unattributed story "The Bride's Chamber," a work that provides important new insights into Dickens' emotional life and creative energies." "By concentrating on the origins and then tracing the astonishing development of three crucial but largely unexamined areas of Dickens' life and art - his obsession with cannibalism, his latter-day experience of and depictions of passion, and his increasing attention to necessity, to behavior that is predetermined and inexorable - Stone offers us an enlarged and deeper appreciation of Dickens' protean art. Employing biographical, psychological, sociological, historical, linguistic, structural, textual, and archetypal techniques, The Night Side of Dickens ranges through the entire Dickens canon, including newly discovered and newly authenticated writings and important unpublished materials. Stone also examines the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literary, journalistic, graphic, medical, ethnographic, and other, often exotic, sources that helped shape the way Dickens saw and re-created everyday life. In the course of this wide-ranging odyssey through Dickens' mind and world, Stone presents the reader with a new and unconventional appreciation of nineteenth-century life and culture, a panorama teeming with humor, horror, and boundless diversity, all brought to vibrant immediacy in 145 full-page illustrations." "A major work of literary scholarship, The Night Side of Dickens offers important insights, not only for Dickens readers and scholars, but for anyone interested in the creative process and in the bright highways and dark byways of nineteenth-century literature and life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description :

Forbidden Fruit is a collection of fascinating, largely untold stories of ordinary men and women who took extraor dinary measures, risking life and limb to be together. It¹s the story of couples who faced mobs, bloodhounds, bounty hunters, and bullets to defy the system that allowed slave masters to breed and sell people like cattle. Some broke the taboo against interracial marriage, putting their lives in the most severe peril. In one remarkable story, a Georgia couple who fled slavery wearing multiple disguises sailed for England with bounty hunters and federal troops on their trail. A fugitive slave from Virginia spent seventeen arduous years searching for his wife. A Missouri slave fell in love with his white Mormon neighbor and escaped to Canada to be with her, putting pepper in his shoes to throw dogs off the scent at night and hiding in trees by day. Betty DeRamus gleaned these amazing stories from descendants of runaway slave couples, unpublished memoirs, Civil War records, books, magazines, and dozens of previously untapped sources. Beautifully and compassionately written, this important book reveals a chapter of American history that is shameful but is about triumph as well as torture, achievement as well as degradation, and indomitable love as well as hate.

Book Description :

Cathal Ó Searcaigh is one of the leading Irish poets of the past twenty-five years. His poetry is widely published in the original Irish and in translation. This, however, is the first collection of critical essays dealing with his work. Gathered here are eight essays by Irish, American and Japanese writers; an interview with the poet himself; original poems; and previously unpublished photographs and translations. The collection's international array of both contributors and perspectives reflects the breadth and scope of Ó Searcaigh's work, and also provides an indication of the high esteem in which his work is held. Remarkably diverse issues and themes are explored in Ó Searcaigh's poetry. These include language, place, religion, sexuality, tradition, modernity, and also the influence of other poets from Ireland and beyond. For those unfamiliar with the poet's work, this volume provides a useful introduction to his poetry; and for those already familiar with his writing, each essay offers new readings of, and fresh returns to, favourite Ó Searcaigh poems, some of which are key texts in the contemporary Irish literature scene.
