Book Description :

The two fields of contemporary Native American literature and culture exist in the tension between two literary traditions: the Native oral and literary tradition and the modern Western mainstream literary influence. In her North Dakota quartet Love Medicine (1984), The Beet Queen (1986), Tracks (1988), The Bingo Palace (1994), Native American mixedblood author, Louise Erdrich (b. 1954) exemplifies where and how these traditions meet and interact. A postmodern reading of the quartet shows that Native American authors and literary critics alike need not be afraid to tread into postmodernism, since an interpretation from this perspective opens up the possibility of freeing Native American literature from the limiting label of "ethnic or minority literature" and of establishing it as a vital part of American literature. This postmodern interpretation of Louise Erdrich's quartet offers a discussion of the theoretical issues involved in the context of ethnic writing and its relation to postmodernism, as well as an analysis of her intricate narrative strategies, in particular, her use of multiple perspectives and of intertextual techniques. The main part of the interpretation consists of a reading of postmodern concepts such as magical realism, carnivalesque humor, the relationship between reader and text, gender roles and sexual identities, history and textuality, the trickster figure, and games and chance as can be found in Louise Erdrich's North Dakota quartet.

Book Description :

The works of Walt Whitman have been described as masculine, feminine, postcolonial, homoerotic, urban, organic, unique, and democratic, yet arguments about the extent to which Whitman could or should be considered a political poet have yet to be fully confronted. Some scholars disregard WhitmanÕs understanding of democracy, insisting on separating his personal works from his political works. A Political Companion to Walt Whitman is the first full-length exploration of WhitmanÕs works through the lens of political theory. Editor John E. Seery and a collection of prominent theorists and philosophers uncover the political awareness of WhitmanÕs poetry and prose, analyzing his faith in the potential of individuals, his call for a revolution in literature and political culture, and his belief in the possibility of combining heroic individualism with democratic justice. A Political Companion to Walt Whitman reaches beyond literature into political theory, revealing the ideology behind WhitmanÕs call for the emergence of American poets of democracy.

Book Description :

Book Description :

The essays collected here represent the latest thinking on postmodernism in a number of key areas: economics, law, postcolonialism, literature, feminism, film, philosophy. One of the issues common to the volume is the desire to cast postmodernism in a predominantly ethical ('just') light, and the opportunities and obstacles postmodernism might place in the path of the description of, and search for, justice. The collection highlights the most recent trends in postmodern thinking, the turn away from postmodernism as mere discourse and language games to a more politically and socially engaged forum. The book will be of interest to all students of contemporary cultural, social and critical thought.

Book Description :

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: Set on a North Dakota reservation, Louise Erdrich’s novel Love Medicine1 is first of all a fictitious story. Despite a writer’s Indian heritage2 it is unsound to read novels as a “true accounts” of reservation life, yet it seems to me that Erdrich’s depiction of Chippewa families includes some issues that are very much part of American Indian reality. “Federal and private agencies have made a series of depressing reports as to the condition of American Indian youth, both in the home and in their interaction with the judicial system.”3 Sentences like this one are ubiquitous in sources not only on young American Indians. The problems usually mentioned are: Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, gang violence, rape, unemployment, jobs with little chance of career growth, depression, suicide and teen pregnancy.4 A number of explanations have been found. “Historical trauma response (HTR) theory is based on the hypothesis that when people were victims of cultural trauma, the aftereffects can be passed down through the generations.”5 Variants of this are Transgenerational Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or “soul wound.“6 Another popular theory is that of “internalized oppression.” This theory states that Natives have been oppressed for hundreds of years and as a group have taken into their own psyche the characteristics of the oppressors resulting in the tendency to oppress themselves even in the absence of an identifiable external oppressor.7 == == 1 Erdrich, Louise.
