Book Description :

'You live in a love story set in the midst of a very real war...' What Wild at Heart did for men, and Captivating did for women, LOVE & WAR will do for married couples everywhere. John and Stasi Eldredge have contributed quintessential works on Christian spirituality for men and women separately but now they turn their focus to the incredible union between those two forces - marriage. With refreshing openness, the Eldredges discuss their own marriage and the insights they've gained from the challenges they've faced. Both speak independently to the reader about what they've learnt, giving their guidance personal immediacy and balanced male and female perspectives. John and Stasi begin LOVE & WAR with an obvious but necessary acknowledgement: marriage is fabulously hard. For every minute of happy delirium, there are equal amounts of disappointment and frustration and a sense that we've been deluded, that this isn't the marriage we dreamed of. Once we admit this, we are free to accept the great adventure of marriage; working together through strength gained from our own individual relationships with God, rather than looking to each other for happiness.

Book Description :

In the aftermath of the Battle of Britain, airmen filled a small town where pioneering plastic surgeon Archibald McIndoe established revolutionary surgical and therapeutic treatments. For the child Liz Byrski, growing up in East Grinstead, the burnt faces of these airmen filled her nightmares. In her late sixties, Liz returned to make peace with her memories and to speak not only with the survivors – known as the Guinea Pig Club – but with the nurses who played a vital and unorthodox role in their treatment, sometimes at a significant personal cost.

Book Description :

Cupid in Africa is the life story of Bertram Greene, a young British gentleman, a poet, an artist, a musician, a wretched student and intellectual and a bitter disappointment to his father, honorable, upright and scrupulous Major Hugh Greene. In order to gain fathers respect Bertram enlists in the army. After doing his training in India he gets sent to North Africa, where he gets involved in very tough and bloody battles. During his time in combat Bertram is learning about himself a lot and he goes through a major change, becoming a proper man of war. Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion.

Book Description :

This bilingual anthology, edited by Christophe Ippolito, contains Samuel Hazo's complete translation of Lebanon: Twenty Poems for One Love and Paul B. Kelley's selections from the never-before-translated Sentimental Archives of a War in Lebanon. The Francophone poet Nadia Tueni has devoted readers in Lebanon and elsewhere in the Middle East and has quickly achieved poetic distinction in France. The fluency of her poetic language and motifs—reflecting Tueni's love of her people and country—is illuminated in Ippolito's introduction: "She chose to create a new poetic language that captured the fragile essence of her troubled country and exposed the many crises of identities present in the war. By identifying with her country, she placed herself beyond all parties and created a sacred river that irrigates her poems." Drawn from two collections that were published during the civil war in Lebanon in 1979 and 1982, these poems are haunted by the Lebanese war: some transcend famous Lebanese locales as the symbolic incarnations of the land's eternal essence; others, illuminated at first by nostalgic memories, take on a prophetic tone. Tueni's work merges the poetic with the political landscape of her country. She writes: " I belong to a country that commits suicide every day, while it is being assassinated." The languages of Rimbaud, Lautreamont, and surrealist poetry have had a decisive influence on Tueni's poetry. But she also owes a great debt on the Arabic side to the avant-garde poets, for example, the celebrated Adonis. Like many Lebanese writers, Tueni was active in political circles, particularly after the war in 1967. Her poems tell of suffering—"memories of an abandoned garden slip away"—of her own life slipping away, and in the end, the reader is invited to reflect on the mimesis of identity: identity of a country, identity of a woman, each echoing the other.
