Book Description :

Living Theatre: History of Theatre conveys the excitement and variety of theatre throughout time, as well as the dynamic ways in which our interpretation of theatre history is informed by contemporary scholarship. This edition opens with, “Theatre: Its Origins and Its History”, which establishes a contemporary context for the study of theatre. Biographical sketches in each chapter bring theatre history to life through the stories of the people who lived that history. Developments in theatre are examined through the debates between scholars and historians, emphasizing the living nature of this vibrant history. A full-color illustration program includes over 100 new photos and revised timelines. New sections on postmodern theatre and non-text-based theatre expand coverage of global theatre throughout the book. Living Theatre sets each period in context through an exploration of the social, political and economic conditions of the day, creating a vivid study of the developments in theatre during that time.

Book Description :

James Roose-Evans, one of Britain's most experienced and innovative directors and founder of the Hampstead Theatre, surveys the history of the avant-garde in the theatre from its origins through such key figures as Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, Craig, Appia, Copeau, Artaud, Piscator, Brecht, Grotowski and up to the most recent experiments of Peter Brook's magnificent Mahabharata. This is a new, enlarged edition of a highly successful and widely-used book. As James Roose-Evans himself writes: 'I am convinced that if one is a practitioner of theatre it is an essential part of one's task to see and know what is going on in all of the arts. We have much to learn from one another as well as from the lessons of history.'

Book Description :

The Living Theatre continues the story Fan Ho began in his first book, Hong Kong Yesterday. Focusing on the people of Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s this book takes a closer look at his beloved city. This is a unique series of images with no image duplication between the other two books, Hong Kong Yesterday and Hong Kong Memoir. The people as actors play out the dramas of their everyday in front of Fan Ho's lens. Printed in duo tone, Fan Ho gracefully captures the crowds of a busy market place, waterways and the alleyways of each city, beautifully telling the story of the lives of the individuals and the spaces in which their stories are staged. Each image is accompanied by a caption, utilising both the visual and written language to create a poetic and wondrous depiction of an era through his eyes.

Book Description :

In 1952, John Cage shocked audiences with 4'33," his composition showcasing the power of silence. From Cage's minimalism to Chris Burden's radical performance art two decades later, the post-war avant-garde sought to liberate the art world by shattering the divide between high and low art. Feast of Excess presents an engaging and accessible portrait of the cultural extremism that emerged in the United States after World War II. This "New Sensibility," as termed by Susan Sontag, was predicated upon excess, pushing and often crossing boundaries whether in the direction of minimalism ormaximalism. Through brief vignette profiles of prominent figures in literature, music, visual art, poetry, theater and journalism, George Cotkin leads readers on a focused journey through the interconnected stories of prominent figures such as Andy Warhol, Anne Sexton, John Cage, John Coltrane, BobDylan, Erica Jong, and Chris Burden, among many others, who broke barriers between artist and audience with their bold, shocking, and headline-grabbing performances. This inventive narrative captures the sentiment of liberation from high and low culture in artistic endeavors spanning from the 1950s to the 1970s and reveals the establishment of excess in American culture as the norm. A detailed emersion in the history of cultural extremism, Feast of Excess leavesreaders to consider the provocative revelation that the essence of excess remains in our culture today, for good and ill.

Book Description :

John Houchin explores the impact of censorship in twentieth-century American theatre, arguing that theatrical censorship coincided with significant challenges to religious, political and cultural systems. The study provides a summary of theatre censorship in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and analyses key episodes from 1900 to 2000. These include attempts to censure Olga Nethersole for her production of Sappho in 1901 and the theatre riots of 1913 that greeted the Abbey Theatre's production of Playboy of the Western World. Houchin explores the efforts to suppress plays in the 1920s that dealt with transgressive sexual material and investigates Congress' politically motivated assaults on plays and actors during the 1930s and 1940s. He investigates the impact of racial violence, political assassinations and the Vietnam War on the trajectory of theatre in the 1960s and concludes by examining the response to gay activist plays such as Angels in America.
