Abstract: There are many fields in which the available sample volume is the limiting factor for an elemental analysis. Over the last ten years, sample introduction systems used in plasma spectrometry (i.e., Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry, ICP-AES, and Mass Spectrometry, ICP-MS) have evolved in order to expand the field of applicability of these techniques to the analysis of micro- and nanosamples. In order to maintain the detection limits of ICP-MS at part per trillion level with micro and nanosamples delivered at uL/min sample uptake rate it is necessary to have a higher percent of analyte entering the plasma than at mL/min sample uptake rate. Below 20 uL/min sample uptake rate the droplet number density decreases causing a drop in droplet-droplet collisions and coagulation and a possible total evaporation of all liquid aerosol. At these low sample uptake rate droplet-droplet collisions is not the major factor limiting analyte transport efficiency. Using a Mira Mist CE nebulizer and a 4 mL single pass spray chamber, a solution delivered at sub uL sample uptake rate was combined with a make-up delivered at uL sample uptake rate. The same transport efficiency (66.7±2.5% and 64.9±3.0 % in average) was found from these two solutions. Therefore, even though the sample is diluted by a make up flow, the ICP-MS signal for the analyte in the sub-uL sample flow should not be degraded by use of a 1 to 5 uL/min make up flow. In order to improve the transport efficiency of the analyte in aqueous solution, the walls of the spray chamber were heated. A conventional 4 mL spray chamber and a 4 mL spray chamber designed with an extra outlet near the injector where a sheath argon gas was were heated with 90°C water and up to 309°C respectively. With the first introduction system and a Mira Mist CE an analyte transport efficiency of 82.2%±2.6 % was measured between 2 and 14 uL/min. With the second spray chamber and a Meinhard High efficiency nebulizer an analyte transport efficiency of 83.9%±2.1 % was measured between 2 and 100 uL/min. The high volatility, low density and higher vapor pressure of organic solvent compared to water allows more sample entering the plasma which cause the ICP-MS to be linearly proportional to the sample flow rate from 1 to 14 uL/min . Since about 80% of the sample is introduced in the plasma and the sample uptake rate is low, the matrix effect should be drastically reduced. By using aqueous standard to calibrate, concentrations of solutions of known concentrations are within a factor of 1.7, 2.0, 2.6 and 3.4 from their true value for solution in methanol, dichloromethane, dioxane and xylene respectively. However for some analysis determining the concentration of solution by a factor of 2 may be sufficient. And there is no need to dispose of organic standard.

The present elemental analysis workhorse worldwide is Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Atomic Emission Spectrometry (AES) and Mass Spectrometry (MS). Due to the high power requirements, large gas consumption and the more obvious attribute, size, the ICP is tethered to the lab. Usually, samples must be collected, bottled, sometimes stabilized by acids and then shipped back to the lab for analysis (hours to days to weeks turnover rate). Due to the demand for a portable analyzer this thesis will focus on further development of microplasma devices (MPDs) for portable on-site analysis, in (near) real-time. Mini-In-Torch Vapourization (mini-ITV) is the sample introduction method for MPDs which removes the need for sample preparation (further necessitates portability). Mini-ITV introduces the sample into the MPD via electrothermal vapourization of a dry (water-free) nano- to micro- volume sample. Pneumatic nebulization, the commercially available ICP sample introduction method would extinguish the microplasma. Microplasma stability is the first issue addressed by confining the microplasma to a quartz tube ("wall-stabilized") in hopes of a more stable MPD background emission. Once stabilized MPD conditions were found key microplasma parameters were studied including MPD power, HVac frequency, operating mode, inter-electrode distance (IED) and observation location, in hopes of improved MPD analytical performance. Microplasma excitation mechanism and maximum energy available in the microplasma for analyte are discussed. Some fundamental characteristics such as excitation temperature (Texc) and changes in atom/ion population with variation in some of the key MPD parameters were also determined.
