Book Description :

The story of a boy, a boat, and a tiger promises an adventure which some may find hard to believe. However, with the Bookclub-in-a-Box discussion companion to Yann Martel's novel, Life of Pi, readers begin to consider how to believe the unbelievable. While Yann Martel takes readers on a voyage of discovery, Bookclub-in-a-Box interprets his exploration: can miracles exist? what is the power of faith? what guarantees successful survival? Let Bookclub-in-a-Box take readers into Pi's mind, the influences in his life, his physical struggle to survive at sea and his spiritual struggle to understand his own faith and his place in the world. There are a great many deep concepts to reflect upon in this small fictional narrative, and Bookclub-in-a-Box presents them for thoughtful consideration.

Book Description :

“Will the tiger be menacing; will the ocean be threatening; will the island be something out of Frankenstein or will it be an Eden?”—Yann Martel Life of Pi, first published in 2002, became an international bestseller and remains one of the most extraordinary and popular works of contemporary fiction. In 2005 an international competition was held to find the perfect artist to illustrate Yann Martel’s Man Booker Prize–winning novel. From thousands of entrants, Croatian artist Tomislav Torjanac was chosen. This lavishly produced edition features forty of Torjanac’s beautiful four-color illustrations, bringing Life of Pi to splendid, eye-popping life. Tomislav Torjanac says of his illustrations: “My vision of the illustrated edition of Life of Pi is based on paintings from a first person’s perspective—Pi’s perspective. The interpretation of what Pi sees is intermeshed with what he feels and it is shown through [the] use of colors, perspective, symbols, hand gestures, etc.”

This engaging summary presents an analysis of Life of Pi by Yann Martel, a powerful novel about the stories we tell ourselves and others and the nature of belief. It tells the story of Piscine “Pi” Patel, a young Indian man whose family of zookeepers decides to immigrate to Canada due to the political instability in India. However, their ship is capsized by a storm, causing the deaths of everyone on board except Pi, who escapes on a lifeboat with a number of animals. Most of the animals quickly kill and eat each other, except Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger. Pi forms a tentative alliance with Richard Parker, and together they manage to overcome the many perils of the ocean and make their way back to shore – assuming, that is, that Pi’s account of his adventures is truthful. Book Description :

The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional--but is it more true?

As the 'crew' begin to assert their natural places in the food chain, Pi's fear mounts, and he must use all his wit and daring to develop an understanding with his fellow survivors. Life of Pi is a 2012 adventure drama film based on Yann Martel's 2001 novel of the same name. Directed by Ang Lee, and written by David Magee, the film stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Tabu, Adil Hussain, and Gérard Depardieu. The storyline revolves around an Indian man named "Pi" Patel, telling a novelist about his life story, and how at 16 he survives a shipwreck and is adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. The film began development shortly after the release of the book, and would see directors M. Night Shyamalan, Alfonso Cuarón and Jean-Pierre Jeunet involved at various stages before the hiring of Lee. Filming was split between India, Taiwan and Montreal in 2011, with Rhythm & Hues Studios (R&H) handling the visual effects work. The film had its worldwide premiere as the opening film of the 50th New York Film Festival at both the Walter Reade Theater and Alice Tully Hall in New York City on September 28, 2012.

Book Description :

ABOUT THE BOOK Author Yann Martel conceived of the story Life of Pi (2002) during his extended travels in India, reading castaway stories and survival tales. Life of Pi is a fantastical chronicle of the adventures of a young boy and his animal companions lost at sea. It has had a tumultuous journey since its arrival in print. The work features a discourse exploring survival, order, danger, chaos and captivity. Yann Martel was born to French-Canadian parents in Spain. Before Life of Pi, he wrote two novels that were not well-received. With the almost instantaneous popularity of Life of Pi, Martel became a lively and outspoken figure and went on to write two more novels of note. According to Martel's talk with the Big Think, "When you have faith in anything it's just a disposition to be open and to trust and to move forward that way. And I find a view of life that entertains a transcendental that engages with the transcendental makes things wealthy. It also it makes things wealthier in their significance and it also it's a way that makes suffering more bearable". MEET THE AUTHOR Zak Ahmed Uddin is a London-based writer who has written about the arts and fashion for both web and print.
