Book Description :

Ask most women whether they have the right to equality at work and the answer will be a resounding yes, but ask the same women whether they'd feel confident asking for a raise, a promotion, or equal pay, and some reticence creeps in. The statistics, although an improvement on previous decades, are certainly not in women's favour - of 197 heads of state, only twenty-two are women. Women hold just 20 percent of seats in parliaments globally, and in the world of big business, a meagre eighteen of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg - Facebook COO and one of Fortune magazine's Most Powerful Women in Business - looks at what women can do to help themselves, and make the small changes in their life that can effect change on a more universal scale. She draws on her own experiences working in some of the world's most successful businesses, as well as academic research, to find practical answers to the problems facing women in the workplace. Learning to 'lean in' is about tackling the anxieties and preconceptions that stop women reaching the top - taking a place at the table, and making yourself a part of the debate.

Book Description :

Gina Barreca is fed up with women who lean in, but don't open their mouths. In her latest collection of essays, she turns her attention to subjects like bondage which she notes now seems to come in fifty shades of grey and has been renamed Spanx. She muses on those lessons learned in Kindergarten that every woman must unlearn like not having to hold the hand of the person you're waking next to (especially if he's a bad boyfriend) or needing to have milk, cookies and a nap every day at 3:00 PM (which tends to sap one's energy not to mention what it does to one's waistline). She sounds off about all those things a woman hates to hear from a man like "Calm down" or "Next time, try buying shoes that fit". "'If You Lean In, Will Men Just Look Down Your Blouse?'" is about getting loud, getting love, getting ahead and getting the first draw (or the last shot). Here are tips, lessons and bold confessions about bad boyfriends at any age, about friends we love and ones we can't stand anymore, about waist size and wasted time, about panic, placebos, placentas and certain kinds of not-so adorable paternalism attached to certain kinds of politicians. The world is kept lively by loud women talking and "'If You Lean In, Will Men Just Look Down Your Blouse?'" cheers and challenges those voices to come together and speak up. You think she's kidding? Oh, boy, do you have another thing coming.

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 2 - SIT AT THE TABLE -Our invited guests, mostly men, grabbed plates and food and sat down at the large conference table. Secretary Geithner's team, all women, took their food last and sat in chairs off to the side of the room. -I motioned for the women to come sit at the table, waving them over so they would feel welcomed. The four women had every right to be at this meeting, but because of their seating choice, they seemed like spectators rather than participants. -A moment when I realized that in addition to facing institutional obstacles, women face a battle from within. -When a man fails, he points to factors like didn't study enough or not interested in the subject matter. EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 5 - ARE YOU MY MENTOR? -Chasing or forcing the [mentor] connection rarely works, and yet I see women attempt this all the time. -The question is a total mood killer, the equivalent of turning to a pensive date and asking, What are you thinking? -I mentor when I see something and say, I want to see that grow. -For the past decade, talk of mentorship and sponsorship has been topic number one at any womens career seminar. -I realized that searching for a mentor has become the professional equivalent of waiting for Prince Charming. -The acknowledgments in this book include a long list of people who have been generous enough to guide and advise me. In turn, I have tried to mentor others, including friends of friends, and as I get older, children of friends.

Book Description :

Organizations around the world are using Lean to redesign care and improve processes in a way that achieves and sustains meaningful results for patients, staff, physicians, and health systems. This book systematically describes how NHS Highland uses Lean principles and mindsets to improve safety, quality, access, and morale while reducing costs, and increasing capacity. Existing books often describe the gains obtained by using Lean methods, but often do not describe the underlying concepts and methods in details. Other books describe continuous improvement work, or specific techniques such as daily management in detail. This book seeks to occupy a middle space by providing an overview of the range of Lean ideas applicable to healthcare with sufficient examples and cases studies from NHS Highland and partner organizations so readers can see them in use and practice.

Book Description :

Lean in the Classroom: The Powerful Strategy for Improving Student Performance and Developing Efficient Processes – Wiegel -- ISBN 9781138323131 - CAT# K392041 The current way of organizing education is not tenable in the coming decade. We need to address how we teach, how we organize schools, how we increase the effectiveness of learning, how we construct classrooms, and how we deploy new technologies. Lean management philosophy has been successfully applied across many industries – from manufacturing to healthcare, financial services, and construction. Recently, interest in Lean has steadily increased in the education sector, as it was originally introduced in that area’s administrative and support processes. Currently, the introduction of Lean and its potential in education is gaining wider exposure because of massive looming changes – for example, the introduction of technology in education (as EdTech within the traditional system and as MOOCs), demographic changes, budget pressure, new pedagogies, the entrance of more and more private providers, and changing demands of society and industry on the curriculum. What is missing is a joint framework that will allow schools, teachers, directors, and boards to harness the potential of these developments and then execute a strategy. Lean Education (LE) offers the potential to streamline the execution of strategy and teaching. It accelerates the development of new courses and studies that are closely aligned to the needs of students. It supports the integration of new technologies without overburdening teachers and staff. Lean in the Classroom brings all these elements together into a coherent framework so schools can make necessary changes in one concerted effort. Teaching, professional support, managing the daily work, and changing the way schools function are brought together as a schoolwide strategy to organize learning in a way that serves our students by making the most of their talents. This book is the first to define LE in all its aspects: course design, actual teaching and learning processes, school management, and the organization of supporting processes. It is firmly based on the Lean management philosophy in conjunction with pedagogy. The book draws on both scientific research in the field of Lean management in general and Lean education in particular. In addition, it is predicated on many years of hands-on experience applying Lean both inside and outside the education sector.

Book Description :

In the 1950’s, the design and implementation of the Toyota Production System (TPS) within Toyota had begun. In the 1960’s, Group Technology (GT) and Cellular Manufacturing (CM) were used by Serck Audco Valves, a high-mix low-volume (HMLV) manufacturer in the United Kingdom, to guide enterprise-wide transformation. In 1996, the publication of the book Lean Thinking introduced the entire world to Lean. Job Shop Lean integrates Lean with GT and CM by using the five Principles of Lean to guide its implementation: (1) identify value, (2) map the value stream, (3) create flow, (4) establish pull, and (5) seek perfection. Unfortunately, the tools typically used to implement the Principles of Lean are incapable of solving the three Industrial Engineering problems that HMLV manufacturers face when implementing Lean: (1) finding the product families in a product mix with hundreds of different products, (2) designing a flexible factory layout that "fits" hundreds of different product routings, and (3) scheduling a multi-product multi-machine production system subject to finite capacity constraints. Based on the Author’s 20+ years of learning, teaching, researching, and implementing Job Shop Lean since 1999, this book Describes the concepts, tools, software, implementation methodology, and barriers to successful implementation of Lean in HMLV production systems Utilizes Production Flow Analysis instead of Value Stream Mapping to eliminate waste in different levels of any HMLV manufacturing enterprise Solves the three Industrial Engineering problems that were mentioned earlier using software like PFAST (Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit), Sgetti and Schedlyzer Explains how the one-at-a-time implementation of manufacturing cells constitutes a long-term strategy for Continuous Improvement Explains how product families and manufacturing cells are the basis for implementing flexible automation, machine monitoring, virtual cells, Manufacturing Execution Systems, and other elements of Industry 4.0 Teaches a new method, Value Network Mapping, to visualize large multi-product multi-machine production systems whose Value Streams share many processes Includes real success stories of Job Shop Lean implementation in a variety of production systems such as a forge shop, a machine shop, a fabrication facility and a shipping department Encourages any HMLV manufacturer planning to implement Job Shop Lean to leverage the co-curricular and extracurricular programs of an Industrial Engineering department

Book Description :

This book deals with a hospital's struggle to secure and maintain financial stability. In the story, the leadership team of a fictional hospital adopts the tools and principles associated with the Toyota Production System or Lean. The story takes the reader through leadership's arduous journey from rejecting the methodology to embracing it, to successful implementation. This book is important because many of our nation's hospitals are besieged with financial difficulties with declining reimbursement and the public is losing confidence in our hospital's ability to provide quality care without error. Lean can provide relief from these issues but only if it is properly implemented.

Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead - A Complete Summary! Lean In is a book written by American author Sheryl Sandberg, which talks about a subject that most of us are familiar with - women's rights. What do women's rights refer to in this book particularly? Well, first of all it is worth saying that this book is not some feminist book that solely talks about women's rights and how women should be treated better than they are now, although the book deals with the similar issues. In addition to describing the situation regarding women's status and then stating that things should be a lot better, Lean In also speaks about men. When talking about men, the author speaks about how they need to support women in every segment and aspect of life, so that the problem with equality is reduced in the best way possible. The core of this book is guidance to women composed of advice and tips on how to increase a woman's prospect of obtaining a better position in her area of expertise. This stems from the author's strong belief that if women truly want to be equal to men, they need to be able to succeed in all aspects of life, especially in their careers. Lean In also speaks about happiness, and says that it is very important for both women and men. Written in a unique manner in order to show "how a woman thinks," Lean In is an interesting read that provides a new perspective. It is not unique because it talks about women's rights, but rather because of how it explains that women, just like men, have the same right to success and have the same right to reach their own happiness and fulfillment. Here Is A Preview Of What You Will Get: - In Lean In: Women, Work, and the Wil to Lead, you will get a summarized version of the book. - In Lean In, you will find the book analyzed to further strengthen your knowledge. - In Lean In, you will get some fun multiple choice quizzes, along with answers to help you learn about the book. Book Description :

Healthcare in the United States is in need of reform. The industry must learn to operate in a fundamentally different way if there is any hope of delivering safer, more reliable, higher quality care with improved patient and staff experience-and accomplish all of this at the lowest possible cost. Advanced Lean in Healthcare is a practical guide for anyone in the healthcare industry. The book presents a novel approach to creating an advanced operating system, breaking it down into simple-to-understand steps. Borrowing from a business system with its roots in manufacturing, Advanced Lean in Healthcare narrates a healthcare industry operational problem through the experience of a patient: a young boy ravaged by terminal illness. By putting a real-world lens on the situation, the book takes the reader through five levels of the increasingly advanced steps of a lean transformation, giving them a bird's-eye view of the required operational and management shifts. By introducing lean strategies one-by-one, the authors provide an easy-to-understand plan for providing higher quality care, improved patient and staff experience, and significant cost savings for healthcare organizations. At its core, lean is a business strategy that aims to increase customer satisfaction and improve staff and corporate productivity by reducing the amount of non-value added work (waste). By engaging everyone in an organization in problem solving to reduce waste, the efficiency and quality of patient care can be optimized. In addition, engaging the entire workforce produces harder-to-quantify results, such as improved morale and greater organizational capability for future problem solving and growth. Advanced Lean in Healthcare introduces the various terms and methodologies of lean and compares them side-by-side with more traditional methods, demonstrating how the five level operating system stacks up against the status quo. In addition, a multitude of colored graphs, photographs, and lists are used to demonstrate and augment the detailed text. By providing specific examples of what works and what doesn't work, the authors make the transformation to a lean system an attainable goal for any organization that is truly committed to change and continuous improvement. The five levels are divided into ten chapters, each building on its predecessor, to provide a clear framework from beginning to end, which healthcare organizations can adapt to their own needs. The end result is a framework that is accessible by anyone in the healthcare industry-including physicians, nurses, technicians, managers, and executives-to create a true transformational shift in their daily operations, making their organization run better, more efficiently, and more affordably, all while maintaining the highest standard of quality and service.
