Book Description :

At the dawn of the twentieth century, a great confidence suffused America. Isaac Cline was one of the era's new men, a scientist who believed he knew all there was to know about the motion of clouds and the behavior of storms. The idea that a hurricane could damage the city of Galveston, Texas, where he was based, was to him preposterous, "an absurd delusion." It was 1900, a year when America felt bigger and stronger than ever before. Nothing in nature could hobble the gleaming city of Galveston, then a magical place that seemed destined to become the New York of the Gulf. That August, a strange, prolonged heat wave gripped the nation and killed scores of people in New York and Chicago. Odd things seemed to happen everywhere: A plague of crickets engulfed Waco. The Bering Glacier began to shrink. Rain fell on Galveston with greater intensity than anyone could remember. Far away, in Africa, immense thunderstorms blossomed over the city of Dakar, and great currents of wind converged. A wave of atmospheric turbulence slipped from the coast of western Africa. Most such waves faded quickly. This one did not. In Cuba, America's overconfidence was made all too obvious by the Weather Bureau's obsession with controlling hurricane forecasts, even though Cuba's indigenous weathermen had pioneered hurricane science. As the bureau's forecasters assured the nation that all was calm in the Caribbean, Cuba's own weathermen fretted about ominous signs in the sky. A curious stillness gripped Antigua. Only a few unlucky sea captains discovered that the storm had achieved an intensity no man alive had ever experienced. In Galveston, reassured by Cline's belief that no hurricane could seriously damage the city, there was celebration. Children played in the rising water. Hundreds of people gathered at the beach to marvel at the fantastically tall waves and gorgeous pink sky, until the surf began ripping the city's beloved beachfront apart. Within the next few hours Galveston would endure a hurricane that to this day remains the nation's deadliest natural disaster. In Galveston alone at least 6,000 people, possibly as many as 10,000, would lose their lives, a number far greater than the combined death toll of the Johnstown Flood and 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. And Isaac Cline would experience his own unbearable loss. Meticulously researched and vividly written, Isaac's Storm is based on Cline's own letters, telegrams, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the hows and whys of great storms. Ultimately, however, it is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets nature's last great uncontrollable force. As such, Isaac's Storm carries a warning for our time.

Book Description :

Ron Rhodes, a leading scholar on biblical prophecy, reveals how looming tensions over oil factor into end-time global alignments and how they may lead to a dramatic shift in the balance of power in the world. Much of the world's oil is in the custody of unstable and sometimes hostile regimes. Nations around the world are positioning themselves to protect their shrinking piece of the pie of dwindling oil reserves. Global tensions continue to rise. In The Coming Oil Storm Rhodes documents the role of Islam as the religion in control of most of the world's oil reserves and shows convincingly that once Muslims are in possession of the two swords of oil and nuclear weapons, they will feel empowered to act as they wish. Oil could even play a role in the path to Armageddon. The Coming Oil Storm is an essential guide for understanding the state of the world today...and what's yet to come.

Book Description :

Since the Second World War, depictions of Royal Air Force operations in film and television drama have become so numerous that they make up a genre worthy of scholarly attention. In this illuminating study, S. P. MacKenzie explores the different ways in which the men of RAF Bomber Command have been represented in dramatic form on the big and small screen from the war years to the present day. Bomber Boys on Screen is the first in-depth study of how and why the screen-drama image of those who flew, those who directed them, and those who provided support for RAF bomber operations has changed over time, sometimes in contested circumstances. Until now dramas that focus on Bomber Command have tended to be mentioned only in passing or studied in isolation, despite the prevalence of surveys of both the British war film genre and of aviation cinema. In Bomber Boys on Screen MacKenzie examines the development, presentation, and reception of significant dramas on a decade-by-decade basis. Titles from the beginning of the war (The Lion Has Wings, 1939) to the start of new century (Bomber's Moon, 2014) are situated in the context of technical possibilities and limitations, evolving social and cultural norms in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, and the development of moral and utilitarian controversies surrounding the wartime bomber offensive directed against Nazi Germany. While the focus is on feature films and television plays, reference is also made to documentaries, memorials, veterans' organizations, book titles, war comics, and other representations of the war fought by Bomber Command.

Book Description :

"A crucible of so many elements that would later shape and characterize Williams's work."—World Literature Today When Tennessee Williams read Spring Storm aloud to his playwriting class at the University of Iowa in 1938, he was met with silence and embarrassment. His professor, the renowned E. C. Mabie, remarked as he got up and dismissed the seminar, "Well, we all have to paint our nudes!" Tom's earlier comment in his journal that the play "is well-constructed, no social propaganda, and is suitable for the commercial stage" seems accurate enough in 1999, but woefully naive deep in the Depression when the play's sexual explicitness—particularly its matter-of-fact acceptance of a woman's right to her own sexuality—would have been seen as not only shocking but also politically radical. Spring Storm would later be disavowed by the author as "simply a study of Sex—a blind animal urge or force (like the regenerative force of April) gripping four lives and leading them into a tangle of cruel and ugly relations." But the solid and deft characterizations of the four young people whose lives intertwine—the sexually alive Heavenly Critchfield, her earthy lover Dick Miles, Heavenly's wealthy but tongue-tied admirer Arthur Shannon, and the repressed librarian Hertha Nielson who loves Arthur—are archetypes of characters we will meet again and again in the Williams canon. Epic in scope, a bit melodramatic in execution, tragic in outcome, Spring Storm created a wave of excitement among theatre insiders when it was given a staged reading at The Ensemble Studio Theatre's Octoberfest '96. This edition has been prepared, with an illuminating introduction, by Dan Isaac, who initiated the Octoberfest production.

Book Description :

Published to coincide with the centenary of the Houndsditch Murders in December 2010, A Storm in the Blood tells the story of the Latvian revolutionaries who killed three officers of the Metropolitan Police. The parallel between the suicide ideologues of the time and contemporary terrorists, willing to die for their ideals, is all too clear. One of the most sensational crimes of the era, the murders were followed by the `Siege of Sidney Street', a gunfight that saw then-Home Secretary Winston Churchill sending troops into the streets of London. A siege and shoot-out in Sherlock Holmes' London after an anarchist robbery gone wrong foreshadows Jerusalem 1947, Manhattan 2001, and Baghdad today. A Storm in the Blood slams home the revolutionary realities of lust, violence, anger and appetite. 'Jon Stephen Fink is the Tarantino of Terrorism.' --John Baxter, Author of the biographies "Kubrick", "George Lucas" and many others

Set during the persecution of the Huguenots in 17th century France, a young Huguenot stonemason by the name of Isaac DuBose, is hired to build a chapel on the elegant estate of the wealthy Marquis Albert DuPont, also a Huguenot. Isaac falls in love with the marquis only daughter, Suzanne, who returns his love. Their relationship, though stormy at times, builds amid the trials of life and cruel waves of religious persecution. As persecutions increase, attending Protestant churches is prohibited and even building a Huguenot chapel becomes a criminal offense. Suzanne s father, the marquis, who is besieged by King Louis XIV and Romanist zealots, narrowly escapes arrest. With the DuPont Chateau infiltrated by spies and the family doggedly pursued by the King s dreaded dragoons, Isaac and Suzanne hurriedly marry and escape by ship with her father and other Huguenots to Charleston, South Carolina where new adventures await them all.
