Application of ionic liquids (ILs) in analytical chemistry can be numerous. The use of ILs in analytical techniques including gas chromatography (GC), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), capillary electrophoresis (CE), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), solid phase microextraction (SPME) and spectroscopy have attracted great attention of scientific community in the past few decades. Many advancements in this field are due to the development of multiply charged, multifunctional ionic liquids. This dissertation mainly consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the use of new, structurally diverse, chemically robust ionic liquids for GC, SPME and ESI-MS applications. Within this section, highly thermally stable GC stationary phases with unique selectivities developed using ILs will be discussed. The design and synthesis of new, flexible linear tricationic ILs will also be discussed. The use of these flexible tricationic ILs as ion pairing reagents in ultra-high sensitive detection of dianionic species in the positive mode of ESI-MS will be presented. Finally, development of a new IL-based silica-bonded polymeric material for SPME-GC headspace and direct immersion analysis will be discussed. The second part of this dissertation focuses on the use of calix[4]arene-based supramolecular architectures for the complexation of NOx gases. These calix[4]arene-NO+ complexes which were prepared by reacting calix[4]arene derivatives with environmentally toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas, were then simply reduced for cleaner generation of medicinally important nitric oxide (NO) gas.

The main focus of this dissertation is on the development of new chiral stationary phases for HPLC and GC and the application of ionic liquids in analytical chemistry. They will be discussed separately in two parts. Enantiomeric separations continue to be of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. It is because drug molecules of opposite chirality often possess distinctive effects in biological environments. Direct chromatography is one of the major techniques used to address the challenge of enantiomeric analysis. Macrocyclic glycopeptides are a very useful class of chiral selectors for HPLC stationary phases because of their broad enantioselectivity. A study of a new macrocyclic glycopeptide antibiotic, dalbavancin, as chiral selector for HPLC will be described in part one. Two stationary phases based on dalbavancin were synthesized via two different binding strategies and compared against with commercial teicoplanin column. The application of Ionic liquids in analytical chemistry is growing rapidly due to their valuable properties such as wide liquid temperature range, high thermal stability, inflammability etc. Several techniques based on ionic liquids are maturing into commercialized products. In part two, the synthesis, physical properties, and the use as ion pairing reagent for anion detection in ESI-MS of linear tricationic ionic liquids will be presented. In chapter 7, a study of new chiral GC columns using ionic liquids as matrices and methylated ionic cyclodextrin as chiral selector will be discussed.

This dissertation contains chapters describing two areas of focused research, namely chiral gas chromatography and the analytical uses of room temperature ionic liquids. The ability to enantiomerically separate chiral molecules has revolutionized the fields of enantiomeric and pharmaceutical analysis. For volatile compounds, chiral gas chromatography is generally capable of producing quick separations with high efficiencies and large peak capacities. The first part of this dissertation includes an introductory review of enantioselective gas chromatography including details of how enantiomers can be separated in gas chromatography, with or without employing a chiral stationary phase, A chapter is then presented describing the enantiomeric separation of a variety of sulfoxides and sulfinate esters on four derivatized cyclodextrin chiral stationary phases. The role of the derivatizing group and the size of the chiral selector are discussed in terms of enantioselectivity and enantiomer elution order. Room temperature ionic liquids are a class of ionic, non-molecular solvents. These solvents possess negligible vapor pressure, can be custom synthesized to be water-miscible or water-immiscible, and are capable of undergoing multiple solvation interactions with other molecules. The second part of this dissertation begins with an introduction of ionic liquids and a review of their applications in analytical chemistry. The remaining chapters introduce various applications and methods used to further characterize this intriguing class of solvents. A linear free energy approach is used to characterize ionic liquids on the basis of their multiple solvation interactions. A new class of high stability ionic liquids are introduced that can provide high efficiency gas chromatographic separations at high temperatures. The ability to form micelles in ionic liquid solvents using various charged surfactants is also presented. In addition, a class of geminal dicationic ionic liquids is introduced and their physico-chemical, thermal, and x-ray crystallographic properties are discussed. The final chapter introduces a thermodynamic model which can be used to predict enthalpies and entropies of solvation and provide an understanding of ionic liquid-alkane interactions.
