Book Description :

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Wirtschaftswissenschaften), language: English, abstract: For many organizations the alignment between social media and organizational culture is a massive challenge because these two concepts do not match in general. The integration of social media in organizations demands preliminary change-oriented cultures which, however, often have inflexible structures that prevent changes. In this thesis, there will be an investigation on the effect of social media integration on the organizational culture by use of literature review, with a special focus on the internal communication within organizations. This thesis first defines the term of social media which are very up-to-date but which are used in many cases so that a differentiated point of view has to be taken. In almost the same manner, the term organizational culture is described. This concept, however, is underestimated because the majority of people do not think of an organizational culture when looking at an organization, but they are rather profit-oriented. Thus, it is crucial to consider this social aspect of an organization. The thesis investigates this concept critically. One of the concerned elements in consequence of the combination between social media and organizational culture is the communication within an organization. An integration of social media technologies has influence on both the internal and external communication. To that effect, changes, consequences, and opportunities of social media integration the context of organizational culture are analyzed and discussed in this thesis. Therefore, the critical analysis of the subject provides an assessment and serves as a basis for the consideration of the effect of social media integration on the organizational culture. Social media may have beneficial outcomes for the organizational culture. Hence, organizational performance and job satisfaction, which are both closely related to organizational culture, are likely to increase. This is because e.g. the chance for work groups is provided by social media to organize themselves efficiently, although the members of the group might avoid each other at the workplace. Nevertheless, using social media also entails risks for the organizational culture. These risks are likely to weaken job satisfaction of employees and, thus, also the organizational culture. One example is the abuse of social media by employees in order to argue or to develop riots at worst.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: 80%, Coventry University, course: BA Contemporary Studies, language: English, abstract: Internet privacy especially in social networks has become one of the burning topics within the social debate in the UK (Dutton et al. 2009). It seems that in Britain the attitude towards information-protection does not live up to the European expectations. Therefore, unawareness among undergraduate students and teenagers is starting to be a priority issue for the government (Internet Society 2010). However, definite solutions to this problem are still to come and perhaps it could be too late by the time someone reacts. This coursework will explore the current social online attitudes towards social networking in terms of privacy-protection focusing on Facebook. In so doing, a concise approach to social networks as potential thread elements will be given. Furthermore, topic-related governmental action will be exposed in light of the results for the Internet Society Privacy Survey 2010. Finally, the conclusion of this work will embrace a summary of the key points alongside with the hypothesis for this coursework. To perform this task, this coursework will take as given essential knowledge for the online situation of social networks, the existing different types and its intended audience with the aim of achieving a deeper insight into the far-reaching effects of social media within their users’ privacy.

Book Description :

Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 2,0, , language: English, abstract: The developments in the digital word introduced new communications channels in the Public Relations (PR) work, which encompass technologies such as social networking. PR and communications practitioners generally accept this development as an advantageous phenomenon. However, recent research on social media has shown that the PR industry in the nonprofit sector lacks a full integration of new media to its full extent in order to be more efficient. Limited research has been carried out to explore the challenges in the adoption of social media channels in this particular sector. This study sought to explore the experiences and perceptions on the process of social media integration in an international NGO. By using the findings of semi-structured interviews of the staff and that of the content analysis of the deployed social media channels, it aims to investigate the effect of social media communication on the relationship building with the supporters through dialogue. The study revealed that different concepts such as dialogical communication and relationship building have enormous value within the online PR work in organisations. The new online platforms can be used for building relationships with stakeholders by embracing two-way communication which leads to a mutual understanding and commitment from the donors. It seemed that strategic social media adoption is also dependant on the organisational culture and power structures in it. Providing for a different understanding of organisational goals and the value of social media on the management level can marginalise a successful contribution of these channels to the strategic communications and fundraising work. The conclusions from this research represent a broad theoretical framework for further research into the effects of social media on successful PR practice in NGOs on a local, national and international level.

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: 72.0, Coventry University (School of Engineering, Environment and Computing), course: MSc. Management of Information Technology, language: English, abstract: The thesis aims at exploring the use of social media to improve students’ academic performance in Nigeria. The study is guided by the interpretivist theoretical perspective which follows a qualitative approach. The findings reveal that Taraba State University students have access to social media, but there is no official social media platform to build learning communities for the improvement of students’ academic performances in the university. In recent times, institutions of higher learning around the world are exploring various technologies that encourage active learning. One of such technologies is the use of social media in building learning communities. Learning communities have assisted students’ learning process by means of collaboration, sharing of ideas and information in their respective subject areas. This is in accordance with the benefits of mobile technologies and ubiquitous computing, internet of a thing and emerging technologies such as web 2.0 and social networking that has captivated the attention of students globally. It is this development that has triggered this research on use of social media to improve students’ academic performance in Nigeria. The study is guided by the interpretivist theoretical perspective which follows a qualitative approach. The case study method and triangulation sampling are employed for indept data collection. Interviews, online survey and observation are used as sources of primary data collection. Constant comparative analysis method is used to analyse the data. Social media has become an integral part of people’s life as this technology enables people to network with friends and associates, share photographs, generate contents, interact in games and real time conversations. The ever-increasing proliferation of mobile technologies has increased the use of social media, more especially in universities where the technology is transforming the way students communicate, collaborate, interact and learn.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,0, University of St Andrews (School of Management), language: English, abstract: Owing to the phenomenal growth of online social networks and the resulting interest of marketers in this new medium, this thesis investigates user perception of targeted advertisements on Facebook, the world’s largest and fastest growing social network. Based on a critical literature review, results of previous research studies, and expert interviews with social media practitioners, the author develops a conceptual framework consisting of seven factors that are theorised to impact on how users perceive personalised ads in a social network environment. This framework is partially verified on an empirical basis by means of an online survey among 97 Facebook users. The results provide novel and useful insights into user perception of targeted ads on Facebook that could be used as guidelines for practitioners and as a starting point for further studies.

Book Description :

Social media has played a central role in the digital era for almost a century, influencing almost all aspects of life. The use of social media in warfare is threatening not only one country but the whole global community, is a recent development. The famous speech by Abu Muhammad al-Adnani on social media inspired the bloody month of Ramadan in 2016 and showed the deadly power of social media inspired attacks and what the Islamic State is capable of achieving. Although the terrorist group has lost territory over the last few weeks of combat both in Syria and Iraq, and is on the edge of losing their main capital Mosul, IS still remains a hybrid threat. Consisting of military powers and an unmatched affinity of using social media as a cyber-war weapon, IS will continue to be a severe danger to the global community. This book aims to foster a deeper understanding of the use of social media for recruiting efforts by the so-called Islamic State (IS), and to analyse its propaganda methods in order to develop possible countermeasures. A special focus will be put on the method of recruitment of young Western foreign fighters. These individuals are the easiest to recruit for ISIS and pose the greatest risk to the global community, especially in regards to home grown terrorism and so-called lone wolf attacks. Since this area of research is very new and quickly evolving, the field still needs extensive research. It is difficult to analyse the use of social media content by the Islamic State due to limited information access and flow (encryption, propaganda, verification and inconsistency). The Islamic State is a military threat on the battleground as well as a potential cyber threat for the international community. Despite these challenging circumstances, this book will provide a new theoretical model based on the marketing model of a customer journey in connection with the main principles of storytelling. Ultimately, this research work will try to provide experts with a new and modern approach of analysis as a base for possible counter measures to weaken and combat the current threat posed by the Islamic State. From the text: - Islamic State; - Terrorism; - Social Media; - Propaganda Institutions; - Radicalisation
