Understanding this connection improves the teaching of melody, rhythm, composition, and improvisation. The companion website contains over 120 pedagogy videos for wind, string, and percussion instruments performed by professional players and teachers, over 50 rehearsal videos, rhythm flashcards, and two additional chapters: "The Rehearsal Toolkit" and ''Job Search and Interview." It also includes over 50 tracks of acoustically pure drones and demonstration exercises for use in rehearsals, sectionals, and lessons. New to this edition: A new chapter on teaching beginning band using sound-to-symbol pedagogies Expanded coverage for strings and orchestra, including a new chapter on teaching beginning strings A new chapter on conducting technique Expanded material on teaching students with disabilities Concert etiquette and the concert experience Expanded coverage on the science of learning, including the Dunning-Krueger effect and the effective use of repetition in rehearsal Techniques for improving students’ practice habits

Book Description :

The research fields of "artificial intelligence and music" and "cognitive musicology" are relative newcomers to the many interdisciplinary groupings based around the centre of AI and cognitive science. They are concerned with the computational study and emulation of human behaviour with respect to music, in many aspects, and with varying degrees of emphasis on psychological plausibility. Recent publications have included work in such diverse areas as rhythm and pitch perception, performance, composition, and formal analysis. Music shares with language the property of giving access to human mental behaviour in a very direct way. As such, it has the potential to be a very useful domain for AI work. Furthermore, in the course of time, AI related work will surely throw light back onto some or all of the fields to which it is applied. Indeed, we are already beginning to feel the benefits of the application of AI techniques to music technology. It is not surprising, therefore, that one of the first areas interest for of musical AI study is that of music education. There are many ways in which an artificial intelligence or cognitive science approach to music education may be applied - for example, to automate tuition, to explain learning processes, to provide metaphors for human computer interaction, and so on. This collection of papers, which is intended to give an impression of both the breadth and depth of the field, originated from a workshop entitled "Music Education: An Artificial Intelligence Approach".

Book Description :

The Oxford Handbook of Preservice Music Teacher Education in the United States identifies the critical need for increased cultural engagement in Pre-K-12 music education. Collectively, the handbook's 56 contributors argue that music education benefits all students only if educators activelywork to broaden diversity in the profession and consistently include diverse learning strategies, experiences, and perspectives in the classroom. In this handbook, contributors encourage music education faculty, researchers, and graduate students to take up that challenge.Throughout the handbook, contributors provide a look at ways music teacher educators prepare teachers to enter the music education profession and offer suggestions for ways in which preservice teachers can advocate for and adapt to changes in contemporary school settings. For example, educators canexpand the types of music groups offered to students, from choir to jazz ensemble. Building upon students' available resources, contributors use research-based approaches to identify the ways in which educational methods and practices must transform in order to successfully challenge existing musiceducation boundaries.

Book Description :

An Orientation to Music Education: Structural Knowledge for Music Teaching focuses on the thoughtful consideration of strategies for successful teaching in both the required and elective music curricula. Practioners agree that teacher clarity and student understanding of the purpose of daily and longer-range instruction are critical in all settings and styles of teaching and learning. With this consensus, the importance of organizing teaching and learning so that they result in effective practice requires all teachers to think in terms of the several types of objectives, and the various strategies, that allow meaningful feedback to reach both individuals and classrooms of learners. Teachers are the only individual who should make the final decisions on instructional priorities; to help the teacher do this effectively, the text provides a background of elements &, the reform movement that affect how teachers make these critical decisions. Practice in making these decisions is then provided throughout the text by engaging students in thinking and discussion activities of the possible goals and venues of instruction. Written for both pre-service and in-service teachers, the text stresses the use of what is known from research and experience about successful music teaching including: The musician's preparing to teach The twenty-first-century music program The reform movement and its controversies for teachers and students Reforms in teacher education Psychological and sociological issues in establishing priorities Tools for organizing instruction in diverse educational settings, including educational taxonomies ranging from Bloom to Marzano and Anderson, reflective of current learning theories Becoming and being a music teacher
