The development of micro- and nanodevices for blood analysis is an interdisciplinary subject that demands the integration of several research fields, such as biotechnology, medicine, chemistry, informatics, optics, electronics, mechanics, and micro/nanotechnologies. Over the last few decades, there has been a notably fast development in the miniaturization of mechanical microdevices, later known as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), which combine electrical and mechanical components at a microscale level. The integration of microflow and optical components in MEMS microdevices, as well as the development of micropumps and microvalves, have promoted the interest of several research fields dealing with fluid flow and transport phenomena happening in microscale devices. Microfluidic systems have many advantages over their macroscale counterparts, offering the ability to work with small sample volumes, providing good manipulation and control of samples, decreasing reaction times, and allowing parallel operations in one single step. As a consequence, microdevices offer great potential for the development of portable and point-of-care diagnostic devices, particularly for blood analysis. Moreover, the recent progress in nanotechnology has contributed to its increasing popularity, and has expanded the areas of application of microfluidic devices, including in the manipulation and analysis of flows on the scale of DNA, proteins, and nanoparticles (nanoflows). In this Special Issue, we invited contributions (original research papers, review articles, and brief communications) that focus on the latest advances and challenges in micro- and nanodevices for diagnostics and blood analysis, micro- and nanofluidics, technologies for flow visualization, MEMS, biochips, and lab-on-a-chip devices and their application to research and industry. We hope to provide an opportunity to the engineering and biomedical community to exchange knowledge and information and to bring together researchers who are interested in the general field of MEMS and micro/nanofluidics and, especially, in its applications to biomedical areas.

The enormous progress in the field of health sciences that has been achieved in the 19th and 20th centuries would have not been possible without the enabling interaction and support of sophisticated technologies that progressively gave rise to a new interdisciplinary field named alternatively as bioengineering or biomedical engineering. Although both terms are synonymous, the latter is less general since it limits the field of application to medicine and clinical practice, while the former covers semantically the whole field of interaction between life sciences and engineering, thus including also applications in biology, biochemistry or the many '-omics'. We use in this book the second, with more general meaning, recalling the very important relation between fundamental science and engineering. And this also recognizes the tremendous economic and social impacts of direct application of engineering in medicine that maintains the health industry as one with the fastest growth in the world economy. Biomechanics, in particular, aims to explain and predict the mechanics of the different components of living beings, from molecules to organisms as well as to design, manufacture and use of any artificial device that interacts with the mechanics of living beings. It helps, therefore, to understand how living systems move, to characterize the interaction between forces and deformation along all spatial scales, to analyze the interaction between structural behavior and microstructure, with the very important particularity of dealing with adaptive systems, able to adapt their internal structure, size and geometry to the particular mechanical environment in which they develop their activity, to understand and predict alterations in the mechanical function due to injuries, diseases or pathologies and, finally, to propose methods of artificial intervention for functional diagnosis or recovery. Biomechanics is today a very highly interdisciplinary subject that attracts the attention of engineers, mathematicians, physicists, chemists, material specialists, biologists, medical doctors, etc. They work in many different topics from a purely scientific objective to industrial applications and with an increasing arsenal of sophisticated modeling and experimental tools but always with the final objectives of better understanding the fundamentals of life and improve the quality of life of human beings. One purpose in this volume has been to present an overview of some of these many possible subjects in a self-contained way for a general audience. Biosensors have been extremely important in revolutionizing healthcare and environmental monitoring. In combination with Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) devices, biological systems can be probed on similar micro and nano dimensions. This can provide a better understanding of how biological systems function and allow for improved treatment methods for diseases and other maladies. However, there are still key limitations in advancing biosensor technology. One of the limitations is biological integration of sensors with tissue for robust interfaces that minimally damage the tissue and can be used in long-term implantations. In this dissertation, three projects are presented where strategies have been used and developed to minimize biosensor invasiveness. Ultrasonic horn probes driven at their longitudinal resonances can allow penetration of tough tissue, such as cardiac tissue or the dura layer surrounding the brain. For cardiac tissue, ultrasonic probes can allow study of the onset of arrhythmias in 3D. A model governing the force reduction propertions of ultrasonic horn probes dependent on driving voltage, insertion velocity, and substrate elasticity is presented to guide design and use of ultrasonic horn probes in a variety of tissues. The first three-dimensional recordings of action potential propagation during ischemia are obtained. The results show the change in activation delay, action potential duration, action potential amplitude, and morphology through the tissue thickness with ischemia. Secondly, based on the ultrasonic horn design, a new miniature neural interface system is introduced. This system can allow study of probe insertion force effects on long-term reactions, stress fields around the inserted probes, and changes in electrode impedance and electrical activity from nearby cells over time. Thirdly, a new hybrid insect olfactory sensor system for gas sensing is presented, which uses Early Metamorphosis Insertion Technology (EMIT) to achieve probe integration. The presented olfactory sensor is based on a silicon neural electrode and is shown to monitor responses to pheromone components and the host plant of the insect, Manduca sexta. The probe sensor is lightweight enough to be carried on the moths. In the context of these projects, wireless system designs and implementations are presented that allow portability and parallel recording from the tissue. The first system presented is used for wireless transmission of cardiac action potentials, and the second is designed for multiplexed wireless transmission of neural signals. By making the probe and data collection systems fully wireless, wire-induced stresses on probes integrated with tissue can be reduced and serve to reduce damage to the tissues.
