Book Description :
This volume is number ten in the 11-volume Handbook of the History of Logic. While there are many examples were a science split from philosophy and became autonomous (such as physics with Newton and biology with Darwin), and while there are, perhaps, topics that are of exclusively philosophical interest, inductive logic — as this handbook attests — is a research field where philosophers and scientists fruitfully and constructively interact. This handbook covers the rich history of scientific turning points in Inductive Logic, including probability theory and decision theory. Written by leading researchers in the field, both this volume and the Handbook as a whole are definitive reference tools for senior undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in the history of logic, the history of philosophy, and any discipline, such as mathematics, computer science, cognitive psychology, and artificial intelligence, for whom the historical background of his or her work is a salient consideration. • Chapter on the Port Royal contributions to probability theory and decision theory • Serves as a singular contribution to the intellectual history of the 20th century • Contains the latest scholarly discoveries and interpretative insights
Book Description :
"How often we recall, with regret", wrote Mark Twain about editors, "that Napoleon once shot at a magazine editor and missed him and killed a publisher. But we remember with charity, that his intentions were good. " Fortunately, we live in more forgiving times, and are openly able to express our pleasure at being the editors of this volume containing the papers selected for presentation at the 14th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming. ILP 2004 was held in Porto from the 6th to the 8th of September, under the auspices of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computing of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), and the Laborat ́ orio de Inteligˆ encia Arti?cial e Ciˆ encias da Computa ̧ c ̃ ao (LIACC). This annual me- ing of ILP practitioners and curious outsiders is intended to act as the premier forum for presenting the most recent and exciting work in the ?eld. Six invited talks--three from ?elds outside ILP, but nevertheless highly relevant to it-- and 20 full presentations formed the nucleus of the conference. It is the full-length papersofthese20presentationsthatcomprisethebulkofthisvolume. Asisnow common with the ILP conference, presentations made to a "Work-in-Progress" track will, hopefully, be available elsewhere. We gratefully acknowledge the continued support of Kluwer Academic P- lishers for the "Best Student Paper" award on behalf of the Machine Lea- ing journal; and Springer-Verlag for continuing to publish the proceedings of these conferences.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP 2003, held in Szeged, Hungary in September/October 2003. The 23 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 53 submissions. Among the topics addressed are multirelational data mining, complexity issues, theory revision, clustering, mathematical discovery, relational reinforcement learning, multirelational learning, inductive inference, description logics, grammar systems, and inductive learning.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP 2001, held in Strasbourg, France in September 2001. The 21 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 37 submissions. Among the topics addressed are data mining issues for multi-relational databases, supervised learning, inductive inference, Bayesian reasoning, learning refinement operators, neural network learning, constraint satisfaction, genetic algorithms, statistical machine learning, transductive inference, etc.
Book Description :
Inductive Logic is a ‘thematic compilation’ by Avi Sion. It collects in one volume many (though not all) of the essays, that he has written on this subject over a period of some 23 years, which all demonstrate the possibility and conditions of validity of human knowledge, the utility and reliability of human cognitive means when properly used, contrary to the skeptical assumptions that are nowadays fashionable. This volume includes essays on the laws of thought, credibility, logical modality, contextuality, adduction, theory formation and selection, induction of actual and modal propositions, factorial induction (factor selection and formula revision), the phenomenological approach, experience, conceptualization, generalization and particularization, causation and its determinations, volition (freewill) and influences thereon, negation, and existential import.
Book Description :
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP-99, held in Bled, Slovenia, in June 1999. The 24 revised papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 40 submissions. Also included are abstracts of three invited contributions. The papers address all current issues in inductive logic programming and inductive learning, from foundational and methodological issues to applications, e.g. in natural language processing, knowledge discovery, and data mining.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP 2002, held in Sydney, Australia in July 2002. The 22 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and revision from 45 submissions. Among the topics addressed are first order decision lists, learning with description logics, bagging in ILP, kernel methods, concept learning, relational learners, description logic programs, Bayesian classifiers, knowledge discovery, data mining, logical sequences, theory learning, stochastic logic programs, machine discovery, and relational pattern discovery.
Book Description :
Although Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) is generally thought of as a research area at the intersection of machine learning and computational logic, Bergadano and Gunetti propose that most of the research in ILP has in fact come from machine learning, particularly in the evolution of inductive reasoning from pattern recognition, through initial approaches to symbolic machine learning, to recent techniques for learning relational concepts. In this book they provide an extended, up-to-date survey of ILP, emphasizing methods and systems suitable for software engineering applications, including inductive program development, testing, and maintenance. Inductive Logic Programming includes a definition of the basic ILP problem and its variations (incremental, with queries, for multiple predicates and predicate invention capabilities), a description of bottom-up operators and techniques (such as least general generalization, inverse resolution, and inverse implication), an analysis of top-down methods (mainly MIS and FOIL-like systems), and a survey of methods and languages for specifying inductive bias. Book Description :
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 27th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP 2017, held in Orléans, France, in September 2017. The 12 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) is a subfield of machine learning, which originally relied on logic programming as a uniform representation language for expressing examples, background knowledge and hypotheses. Due to its strong representation formalism, based on first-order logic, ILP provides an excellent means for multi-relational learning and data mining, and more generally for learning from structured data.
Book Description :
This book provides an introduction to probabilistic inductive logic programming. It places emphasis on the methods based on logic programming principles and covers formalisms and systems, implementations and applications, as well as theory.
Book Description :
This book contains the post-conference proceedings of the 17th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming. It covers current topics in inductive logic programming, from theoretical and methodological issues to advanced applications.
Book Description :
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP 2016, held in London, UK, in September 2016. The 10 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 29 submissions. The papers represent well the current breath of ILP research topics such as predicate invention; graph-based learning; spatial learning; logical foundations; statistical relational learning; probabilistic ILP; implementation and scalability; applications in robotics, cyber security and games.
