Book Description :

Finalista del National Book Award! Bestseller del New York Times!

Book Description :

From the New York Times bestselling author of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, an utterly original memoir-in-essays that is as deeply moving as it is hilarious Growing up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants in Chicago in the nineties, Erika Sánchez was a self-described pariah, misfit, and disappointment—a foul-mouthed, melancholic rabble-rouser who painted her nails black but also loved comedy, often laughing so hard with her friends that she had to leave her school classroom. Twenty-five years later, she’s now an award-winning novelist, poet, and essayist, but she’s still got an irrepressible laugh, an acerbic wit, and singular powers of perception about the world around her. In these essays, Sánchez writes about everything from sex to white feminism to debilitating depression, revealing an interior life rich with ideas, self-awareness, and perception. Raunchy, insightful, unapologetic, and brutally honest, Crying in the Bathroom is Sánchez at her best—a book that will make you feel that post-confessional high that comes from talking for hours with your best friend.

Book Description :

What are the elements of culturally responsive and sustaining instruction? How can these elements be implemented in classrooms? One of the most effective methods of addressing these issues is the Culturally Responsive Instruction Observation Protocol (CRIOP), which is being used in school districts nationwide to guide teacher professional development. A Framework for Culturally Responsive Practices presents scholarship in second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, culturally appropriate assessment, educational anthropology, educational psychology, instruction, and critical pedagogy to provide guidance to those who strive to teach in ways that meet the needs of a diverse student population. The book is a culmination of the authors’ many years of experience as both researchers and instructional coaches in schools, presenting a comprehensive portrait of the research and practices associated with culturally responsive teaching. Each chapter showcases a different element of the CRIOP, providing supporting research as well as ways to implement the element in K-8 classrooms. The book also includes several specific examples written by teachers in the field and a comprehensive bibliography. This is a practical guide that can be used in a variety of courses for pre-service teachers as well as by teachers and administrators in school districts across the country. Perfect for courses such as: Teaching in a Diverse Society, Multicultural Education, Effective Teaching Practices in Elementary/Middle School, Cultural and Social Foundations of Education, Teaching Diverse Populations, Sociocultural Perspectives in Education, Educational Perspectives in a Global Society, Educational Inequality, Urban Studies

Contributions by Carolina Alonso, Elena Avilés, Trevor Boffone, Christi Cook, Ella Diaz, Amanda Ellis, Cristina Herrera, Guadalupe García McCall, Domino Pérez, Adrianna M. Santos, Roxanne Schroeder-Arce, Lettycia Terrones, and Tim Wadham In Nerds, Goths, Geeks, and Freaks: Outsiders in Chicanx and Latinx Young Adult Literature, the outsider intersects with discussions of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. The essays in this volume address questions of outsider identities and how these identities are shaped by mainstream myths around Chicanx and Latinx young people, particularly with the common stereotype of the struggling, underachieving inner-city teens. Contributors also grapple with how young adults reclaim what it means to be an outsider, weirdo, nerd, or goth, and how the reclamation of these marginalized identities expand conversations around authenticity and narrow understandings of what constitutes cultural identity. Included are analysis of such texts as I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, Shadowshaper, Swimming While Drowning, and others. Addressed in the essays are themes of outsiders in Chicanx/Latinx children’s and young adult literature, and the contributors insist that to understand Latinx youth identities it is necessary to shed light on outsiders within an already marginalized ethnic group: nerds, goths, geeks, freaks, and others who might not fit within such Latinx popular cultural paradigms as the chola and cholo, identities that are ever-present in films, television, and the internet.

Book Description :

For this project, I explore two Latina female authors, Elizabeth Acevedo and Erika L. Sánchez, who work in the cross sections of ethnic literature, gender, and young adult novels. Both authors belong to communities that have historically been underrepresented in literature and in American society. Acevedo, Dominican-American, and Sánchez, Mexican-American, both use their first- hand experiences of being raised in immigrant households to express the generational and gender expectations that are placed on children, especially women. Their bodies of work serve as voices for the voiceless and provide meaningful depictions of the dual identity many young Latinx have had to form in balancing multiple cultures, specifically their parents and their own. Acevedo and Sánchez's novels Poet X (2018) and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter (2017) examine Latinx1 households and parental influence that restrict their daughters from having an independent identity apart from their own. Protagonists Julia and Xiomara challenge cultural norms and choose to balance between cultures to form their own hybrid identity. They use writing as a means for their voices to be acknowledged and create a space for representation of their identities.

Book Description :

Building on the notion of fiction as communicative act, this collection brings together an interdisciplinary range of scholars to examine the evolving relationship between authors and readers in fictional works from 18th-century English novels through to contemporary digital fiction. The book showcases a diverse range of contributions from scholars in stylistics, rhetoric, pragmatics, and literary studies to offer new ways of looking at the "author–reader channel," drawing on work from Roger Sell, Jean-Jacques Lecercle, and James Phelan. The volume traces the evolution of its form across historical periods, genres, and media, from its origins in the conversational mode of direct address in 18th-century English novels to the use of second-person narratives in the 20th century through to 21st-century digital fiction with its implicit requirement for reader participation. The book engages in questions of how the author–reader channel is shaped by different forms, and how this continues to evolve in emerging contemporary genres and of shifting ethics of author and reader involvement. This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars interested in the intersection of pragmatics, stylistics, and literary studies.

Penelope Prado has always dreamed of opening her own pastelería next to her father's restaurant, Nacho's Tacos. But her mom and dad have different plans—leaving Pen to choose between not disappointing her traditional Mexican American parents or following her own path. When she confesses a secret she's been keeping, her world is sent into a tailspin. But then she meets a cute new hire at Nacho's who sees through her hard exterior and asks the questions she's been too afraid to ask herself. Xander Amaro has been searching for home since he was a little boy. For him, a job at Nacho's is an opportunity for just that—a chance at a normal life, to settle in at his abuelo's, and to find the father who left him behind. But when both the restaurant and Xander's immigrant status are threatened, he will do whatever it takes to protect his newfound family and himself. Together, Pen and Xander must navigate first love and discovering where they belong in order to save the place they all call home. This stunning and poignant novel from debut author Laekan Zea Kemp explores identity, found families and the power of food, all nestled within a courageous and intensely loyal Chicanx community.

Told in dual narrative, This Is My Brain in Love is a stunning YA contemporary romance, exploring mental health, race, and, ultimately self-acceptance, for fans of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter and Emergency Contact. Jocelyn Wu has just three wishes for her junior year: To make it through without dying of boredom, to direct a short film with her BFF Priya Venkatram, and to get at least two months into the year without being compared to or confused with Peggy Chang, the only other Chinese girl in her grade. Will Domenici has two goals: to find a paying summer internship, and to prove he has what it takes to become an editor on his school paper. Then Jocelyn's father tells her their family restaurant may be going under, and all wishes are off. Because her dad has the marketing skills of a dumpling, it's up to Jocelyn and her unlikely new employee, Will, to bring A-Plus Chinese Garden into the 21st century (or, at least, to Facebook). What starts off as a rocky partnership soon grows into something more. But family prejudices and the uncertain future of A-Plus threaten to keep Will and Jocelyn apart. It will take everything they have and more, to save the family restaurant and their budding romance.
