A high school beauty turned teenage mother gets a second chance at love in this YA urban romance by the author of A Girl Like Me. With a bootylicious body like Beyoncé and a face that would put any top model to shame, Toi McKnight had all the cuties coming her way. She was always rocking the latest fashion trends and hanging at every bangin' party in the city. But all that came at a price, and now Toi McKnight is the seventeen-year-old mother of a baby boy. Between paying her bills and raising her son, Toi's got zero time for fun—even if sparks are flying between her and deliciously fine Harlem Sims. She's vowed to never love again, and besides, the ambitious college boy doesn't date teenage mothers. But every time Toi tries to cut Harlem loose, she just falls harder for him. And it doesn’t help when her son's no-good father comes back around. Toi tries to do the right thing, but doing the right thing just may put her on heartbreak express for good.

Book Description :

“Lovers who surmount the odds have always been intense emotional fodder, but rarely have we seen a story like Birthday...true and raw, haunting and undeniable.” —The New York Times Book Review Two best friends. A shared birthday. Six years... ERIC: There was the day we were born. There was the minute Morgan and I decided we were best friends for life. The years where we stuck by each other’s side—as Morgan’s mom died, as he moved across town, as I joined the football team, as my parents started fighting. But sometimes I worry that Morgan and I won’t be best friends forever. That there’ll be a day, a minute, a second, where it all falls apart and there’s no turning back the clock. MORGAN: I know that every birthday should feel like a new beginning, but I’m trapped in this mixed-up body, in this wrong life, in Nowheresville, Tennessee, on repeat. With a dad who cares about his football team more than me, a mom I miss more than anything, and a best friend who can never know my biggest secret. Maybe one day I’ll be ready to become the person I am inside. To become her. To tell the world. To tell Eric. But when? Six years of birthdays reveal Eric and Morgan’s destiny as they come together, drift apart, fall in love, and discover who they’re meant to be—and if they’re meant to be together. From the award-winning author of If I Was Your Girl, Meredith Russo, comes a heart-wrenching and universal story of identity, first love, and fate. “Beautifully written, Birthday is an altogether singular contribution to the gradually growing body of transgender literature and, indeed, to mainstream literature, as well.” —ALA Booklist, starred review

Book Description :

This book is a collection of both literary and visual art produced by the students at Yerba Buena High School in San Jose, California. After working numerous hours on their own creating their pieces for the book, these students then spent countless hours working one on one with us to perfect their work. For many people this may seem an easy task. However, life is not so easy on San Jose's east side. When we came up with the idea to create a literary and visual art book, the Consortium of California Subject Matter Project at San Jose State University, the group who funded the project, did not see it as such a unique idea. We had to convince them that this was unique. First, one needs to understand that while many of our students have caring and supportive families, they still face great challenges in their daily lives. Some students are parents, some have parents who cannot read or help them with schoolwork, some face various forms of violence, some move from place to place looking for stability and security, some help raise their younger siblings and many are full of amazing talent that needs to be shared. Yerba Buena High School, where these students work to earn their diplomas, is classified as an under-performing school, but we are improving, as the work in this book will show. We are a school where we have common dress to help prevent gang violence, where 46% of our students are eligible for free lunch, where college is more often a dream than a given, where students joint teachers and staff to improve both academically and socially. Our school is a wonderful place where we are making great strides in improved students' performance. But, it is not like those schools you see on television or in the movies. In all of those schools the kids can read but just don't want to read. Here, over half of our incoming freshmen are reading 3 or more years below grade level. Here we are not just covering curriculum for grades 9-12; we are, at times, having to go back to fourth or fifth grade curricula to re-teach skills that for various reasons are lacking. Here, at Yerba Buena, our students are running up hill and still finding ways to lead the race. In this book, our students have the opportunity to show just how talented and amazing they are. Thank you and enjoy, Meghan Engle and J.A. Epstein

Book Description :

On Thanksgiving morning, Paria Hassouri finds herself furiously praying and negotiating with the universe as she irons a dress her fourteen-year-old, designated male at birth, has secretly purchased and wants to wear to dinner with the extended family. In this wonderfully frank, loving, and practical account of parenting a transgender teen, Paria chronicles what amounts to a dual transition: as her child transitions from male to female, she navigates through anger, denial, and grief to eventually arrive at acceptance. Despite her experience advising other parents in her work as a pediatrician, she was blindsided by her child's gender identity. Paria is also forced to examine how she still carries insecurities from her past of growing up as an Iranian-American immigrant in a predominantly white neighborhood, and how her life experience is causing her to parent with fear instead of love. Paria discovers her capacity to evolve, as well as what it really means to parent and the deepest nature of unconditional love. This page-turning memoir relates a tender story of loving and parenting a teenager coming out as transgender and transitioning. It explores identity, self-discovery in adolescence and midlife, and difference in a world that values conformity. At its heart, Found in Transition is a universally inspiring portrait of what it means to be a family.

Book Description :

The Kid Justice Series is trying to send a message to the youth of this world that it is alright to be normal. It’s alright to help people in need and that it is wrong to do harm to our fellow men and women. This is the first volume. Volume two is being written at present. The book covers some of the wrong that our young may encounter and the evil forces a city can thrust upon them. It is not trying to scare anyone but does show, in a graphic way, some of the issues all society is confronted with, day in and day out. Kid Justice, (Corey Groves), is a young man, eighteen years of age, who becomes dedicated to fighting crimes of all kinds, and is a young master of the martial arts. His master teacher is Master Jung, his uncle, who becomes his father after Corey’s parents are killed in a car accident. Together they create the Justice Team and work alongside the police as a surveillance squad displaying a presence that becomes a deterring force to be reckoned with. The Justice Team starts out with just four members. Corey, Lake, Sheena and their Master Teacher, Master Jung. You’ll have to buy the book to find out how they become a team and all the issues they are confronted with. It has action for those who like that. It has romance for the women and some of the issues a young girl might encounter while growing up. So please enjoy! The two continued walking and then suddenly heard a screaming cry for help. It was loud enough to pierce an ear drum. Seeing a young girl being bullied by two of the scum they had been searching for, caused them to accelerate to the scene like two black and whites without lights and sirens. Scum being what they are took the girl using her for cover with a switch blade at her throat. They were brave enough to bully a girl, innocent and kindhearted, causing her to fear for her life; but weak and cowardly when threatened by a force to be reckoned with. Corey slowly closed the distance to the bully. “Don’t come any closer man,” This scum that doesn’t respect anything, human or otherwise, warned.
