It’s an entire world, a colony full of life. In other words, you contain multitudes. They sculpt our organs, protect us from diseases, guide our behaviour, and bombard us with their genes. They also hold the key to understanding all life on earth. In I Contain Multitudes, Ed Yong opens our eyes and invites us to marvel at ourselves and other animals in a new light, less as individuals and more as thriving ecosystems. You'll never think about your mind, body or preferences in the same way again. 'Super-interesting... He just keeps imparting one surprising, fascinating insight after the next. Executive summary of the original book Key takeaways & analysis An editorial review A brief bio of the author Original Book Summary Overview Ed Yong's "I Contain Multitudes" is an awe-inspiring exploration of the hidden universe of microorganisms-from the way they shaped the evolution of plants and animals to the way they steer adaptations to hostile environments today. Yong writes with wit and candor, recasting microbes from their conventional role of infectious villains to (mostly harmless) support players. Anyone harboring the minutest curiosity about the thriving life beneath their skin and inside their guts will find this book an incredibly insightful read. BEFORE YOU BUY: The purpose of this SUMOREADS Analysis is to help you decide if it's worth the time, money and effort reading the original book (if you haven't already). Book Description :

This study explores Walt Whitman's contradictory response to and embrace of several great prior British poets: Shakespeare, Milton, Burns, Blake, and Wordworth (with shorter essays on Scott, Carlyle, Tennyson, Wilde, and Swinburne). Through reference to his entire oeuvre, his published literary criticism, and his private conversations, letters and manuscripts, it seeks to understand the extent to which Whitman experienced the anxiety of influence as he sought to establish himself as America's poet-prophet or bard (and the extent to which he sought to conceal such influence). An attempt is also made to lay out the often profound aesthetic, cultural, political, and philosophical affinities Whitman shared with these predecessors. It also focuses on all of Whitman's extant comments on these iconic authors. Because Whitman was a deeply autobiographical writer, attention is also paid to how his comments on other poets reflect on his image of himself and on the ways he shaped his public image. Attention is also given to how Whitman's attitudes to his British fore-runners changed over the nearly fifty years of his active career.

Book Description :

Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself. (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Abundant, ecstatic, generous, courageous - this is the first American epic poem, a celebration of selfhood and a catalogue of nineteenth-century American life of all ages and races. Revolutionary in style and controversial in content when it was first published in 1855, Whitman's masterwork has since inspired generations with its intoxicating rhythms and images, and its inclusive, praiseful joy. Book Description :

When Walt Whitman wrote, “Do I contradict myself? So, I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes!” he may well have been writing about the expansive and complex terrain that is gun control. Reg Darling has contributed to the national conversation surrounding guns and gun rights with this passionate conversation with himself. Like many of us, he tries to work his way through the various complexities and contradictions that result from his own experiences and background. Unlike many of us, he seems to have made some progress." Stan Denski, author, Media Education & the (Re)production of Culture (with David Sholle).

Book Description :

"Song of Myself is a prayer which includes all--infants, young and old women, boys and men of old age. Whitman says, "I am large, I contain multitudes" and his song names the most humble--the old artillerist, the newly-come immigrants, as well as the Mayor and the President. The poet, a wonderer, weaves an idea of identity by crossing the country from modern cities to vast and poor rural landscapes. It takes a multitude to build an I and a country. This homage to Whitman's powerful life-celebrating song was conceived for JAB42 during a residency at the Center for Book, Paper & Print at Columbia College Chicago in February, 2017. A special thanks for Brad Freeman, Ruby Figueroa, Ian Kerstetter and Willa Goettling."--back cover
