Book Description :

Martin Buber's classic philosophy of dialogue, I and Thou, is at the core of Kenneth Paul Kramer's scholarly and impressive guide. The three main parts of Kramer's work parallel the three key sections of I and Thou while focusing on Buber's concepts of nature, turning, spirit-becoming-forms, true community, the real I, and the eternal Thou. Kramer also illuminates Buber's two fundamental dialogues: the I-Thou and the I-It, Kramer clarifies, puts into practice, and vigorously affirms the moral validity of Buber's philosophy - with its extension to love, marriage, the family, the community, and God - in the conviction that "genuine dialogue" will produce better relations with one another, the world, and God.

Book Description :

At the turn of the century Martin Buber arrived on the philosophic scene ... The path to his maturity was one long struggle with the problem of unity- in particular with the problem of the unity of spirit and life; and he saw the problem itself to be rooted in the supposition of the primacy of the subject-object relation, with subjects "over here," objects "over there," and their relation a matter of subjects "taking in" objects or, alternatively, constituting them. But Buber moved into a position which undercuts the subject-object dichotomy and initiates a second "Copernican revolution" in philosophical thought.

Book Description :

Today considered a landmark of twentieth-century intellectual history, I and Thou is also one of the most important books of Western theology. In it, Martin Buber, heavily influenced by the writings of Frederich Nietzsche, united the proto-Existentialists currents of modern German thought with the Judeo-Christian tradition, powerfully updating faith for modern times. Since its first appearance in German in 1923, this slender volume has become one of the epoch-making works of our time. Not only does it present the best thinking of one of the greatest Jewish minds in centuries, but has helped to mold approaches to reconciling God with the workings of the modern world and the consciousness of its inhabitants. This work is the centerpiece of Buber's groundbreaking philosophy. It lays out a view of the world in which human beings can enter into relationships using their innermost and whole being to form true partnerships. These deep forms of rapport contrast with those that spring from the Industrial Revolution, namely the common, but basically unethical, treatment of others as objects for our use and the incorrect view of the universe as merely the object of our senses, experiences. Buber goes on to demonstrate how these interhuman meetings are a reflection of the human meeting with God. For Buber, the essence of biblical religion consists in the fact that -- regardless of the infinite abyss between them -- a dialogue between man and God is possible. Ecumenical in its appeal, I and Thou nevertheless reflects the profound Talmudic tradition from which it has emerged. For Judaism, Buber's writings have been of revolutionary importance. No other writer has so shaken Judaism from parochialism and applied it so relevantly to the problems and concerns of contemporary men. On the other hand, the fundamentalist Protestant movement in this country has appropriated Buber's "I and Thou encounter" as the implicit basis of its doctrine of immediate faith-based salvation. In this light, Martin Buber has been viewed as the Jewish counterpart to Paul Tillich. This is the original English translation, available in America only in this hardcover edition of I and Thou. Martin Buber considered Ronald Smith's the best of the English translations and it was prepared in the author's presence. The more poetic rendering, this translation can be looked at as the King James Version of Buber's I and Thou.

Book Description :

I and Thou is a summons calling us to dialogue today. Like the call Buber himself received, the book invites us to encounter the Other, our counterparts both human and eternal. Buber's spiritual awakening, his engagement with his people and his times, his wide reading, and his grief are contexts that open up this call to us to join with him in the fullness of a life of dialogue. If we follow Buber into his study, into the struggle of his inner life, into his achievement of dialogical existence--he opens up the wonders of I and Thou to us as his testament and his call to us to turn to dialogue, and he shows us the path to the fulfillment of that life. This book ushers us to that place.

Book Description :

Self-realization of man in Western philosophy proceeds basically from the standpoint of Being. In the Eastern tradition, however, a fundamentally different standpoint of non-differentiation of reality that contemplates self-realization as grounded in “Emptiness” has endured. In a world that is fast becoming a global community, dialogue between these two opposing philosophical world-views is preferred, without, however, sacrificing their crucial differences against a possibility of mere comparison nor fusion that could create only a superficial blending. In service for the continuous search for the fundamental truth about oneself, this thesis interprets and explores self-realization in the Eastern perspective, in an attempt to make intelligible to Western readers the true reality of the self as empty. In particular, it expounds on the value of self-awareness in the “I-Thou” structure in Kitaro Nishida’s philosophy of “Nothingness,” as his philosophy typifies this category of East-West dialogue in his confrontation of Western thought with his Zen orientation. After tracing Nishida’s notion of “Nothingness” to its Mahayana Buddhist concept of “Emptiness” as its source, a consideration on the location of self-awareness in the development of his different standpoints is surveyed. This study reveals, firstly, that the Buddhist concept of self-realization is the awareness of the true self as no-self, that through it, knowledge of the self and the world is grasped. That this Buddhist principle is reflected in Nishida’s philosophy of “Nothingness,” could well be established as seen in the development of his different standpoints of “pure experience,” “consciousness,” “place,” and finally, that of the “historical world,” where selfawareness is nothing more than the “I” radically negating itself becoming fundamentally a “non-I,” in relation with the “Thou.” In this perspective that sees reality as nothing, self-awareness takes a crucial function in that, it is the only link towards the knowledge of the true nature of the self, others, and the world. As such, this radical transformation of man is the very reason for the transformation of the world, as both individual and the world mutually creates each other in the process of becoming.

Book Description :

Martin Buber, one of the twentieth century’s most distinguished and creative thinkers, famously argued that the fundamental fact of human existence is person with person, and that practicing genuine dialogue is necessary for anyone who wishes to become authentically human. This book seeks to unleash and reassemble the core elements for practicing dialogue—turning and addressing, and then listening and responding. Despite what many say, the innermost growth of the self does not come in relation to one’s self. Rather, attaining one’s authentic human existence (one’s innate self-realization) emerges again and again through genuine dialogue, through “participatory consciousness.” We become authentically human in and through our relationships with others. Here’s the point—instead of having dialogues, human beings mutually become dialogue with others. Individual human beings in dialogue with one another become memorable mutualities found nowhere else, opening out into the world.
