Hydrogen fuel is considered one of the major emerging renewable substitutes for fossil fuel. A crucial factor as to whether hydrogen will be successful depends on its cost as a substitute. Recently, there has been a growing interest in investigating the feasibility from a supply chain point of view. This thesis intends to provide a comprehensive study of the feasibility of hydrogen as a transportation fuel from a supply chain point of view. The aim is to discover the most efficient, sustainable, and ultimately most cost-effective strategy to meet future transportation demand scenarios. This includes optimizing costs over production, compression, storage, distribution, and dispensation. Moreover, through the decision support model developed in this thesis, insights regarding strategic approaches for hydrogen supply chain infrastructure development are developed, such as the tradeoff between centralized and distributed production. A case study in Spain is presented to illustrate the supply chain. Different models are proposed to estimate electricity generation capacity, hydrogen production scheme, transportation topology, distribution methods and future demands. Six different scenarios, based on different production scheme, future demand level, are tested. Results from the case study indicate that it is more cost effective to transmit electricity from wind farms to locations close to demand sites to do centralized production. In terms of transportation, liquid gas truck is the preferred mode of transportation from production sites to local demand regions. The model can adapt be extended and adapted to consider other configurations of the supply chain network.

The driving factors for pursuing alternative fuels stem from energy issues associated with fossil based sources. In particular, such sources are finite in quantity, foreign sourced, and directly emit both greenhouse gasses (GHGs) and criteria pollutants during their utilization. In California, the transportation sector is in the lead for the consumption of overall energy by sector, with passenger vehicles emitting the most GHGs out of the entire transportation sector. Motivated by the large body of legislation and the complex nature of the potential alternative fuel supply chains, the goal of this work is to examine hydrogen as an alternative transportation fuel. To this end, a computer model was developed that allows for the systematic selection of preferred hydrogen supply chains. The goals of this thesis are to: 1) Establish spatially and temporally resolved generation, distribution, dispensing, and utilization scenarios for fueling the hydrogen transportation sector based on a systematic selection technique, and 2) Quantify the environmental impacts, and energy requirements in comparison to the current supply of petroleum fuels. The modeling approach developed herein, the Hydrogen Fueling infrastructure tool (HFit), takes a global decision-making approach to the creation and evolution of a future hydrogen infrastructure. In order to exercise the HFit, several case studies were conducted with different decision-making datasets. The outputs allowed for the simulation and quantification of a future hydrogen economy within the state of California on a spatial and temporal basis.

Initiatives to improve air quality in urban areas and to mitigate climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions have resulted in new mandates and legislation to implement zero emissions vehicles (ZEV). While several studies have focused on fueling infrastructure for light-duty fuel cell electric vehicles, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the nature of hydrogen supply chains for fuel cell electric buses. This thesis presents an analysis of hydrogen infrastructures to guide policymakers and transit agencies in the identification of preferable scenarios for the deployment of hydrogen fuel cell electric buses.Based on research for light-duty vehicles conducted at the Advanced Power and Energy Program in the University of California, Irvine, two novel computer-based tools were developed to design and analyze environmentally sensitive hydrogen fueling infrastructure that addresses the wide range of requirements faced by transit agencies in the deployment of fuel cell buses. The first tool provides spatially-resolved allocation of hydrogen demand and identifies feedstocks for hydrogen production. The second tool provides a systematic evaluation of hydrogen supply chain scenarios through the analysis of well-to-wheel energy and water demand, and the emission of greenhouse gases and criteria pollutants. In addition, this evaluation includes a detailed analysis of the space requirements and operations modifications for the placement of hydrogen fueling infrastructure at transit agencies.The tools were used to establish hydrogen fueling infrastructures scenarios at three levels of deployment: national, state and county. At the national level, the spatial allocation of hydrogen demand and potential environmental benefits of different hydrogen scenarios were developed for transit agencies in the U.S. At the state level, the hydrogen demand allocation and spatial rollout of possible feedstock sources were established for the state of California. At the local level, preferable hydrogen scenarios were developed for a large transit agency (the Orange County Transportation Authority) along with the quantification of emissions and resources and cost projections of hydrogen distribution pathways.
