Book Description :

Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the causal agent for this condition. The natural history of cervical cancer is characterized by slow disease progression, rendering the condition, in essence, preventable and even treatable when diagnosed in early stages. Pap smear and the recently introduced prophylactic vaccines are the most prominent prevention options, but despite the availability of these primary and secondary screening tools, the global burden of disease is unfortunately still very high. This book will focus on the clinical aspects of HPV and related disease, highlighting the latest developments in this field.

Epidemiological studies and clinical, pathological, and cytological aspects of HPV infection are reviewed. Modern methods for analyzing HPV-DNA types by molecular biological techniques are described, and the statistical problems to be overcome in epidemiological work are explained. The volume was prepared by a broad team of experts from around the world, who met in Copenhagen in March 1988 to reach a consensus on the present state of understanding and to establish directions for future work.

We then look at the dynamic trends of this infectious agent in the human population, how it interacts with human cells, and the role it plays with other organisms to produce both benign and malignant tumors. Lastly, there is a discussion about a new vaccine for HPV and the hopes that are held by many to change the trends with this virus and the associated cancers it produces.

Human Papillomavirus: Proving and Using a Viral Cause for Cancer presents a steady and massive accumulation of evidence about the role of HPV and prevention of HPV-induced cancer, along with the role and personal commitment of many scientists of different backgrounds in establishing global relevance. This exercise involved years of personal commitment to proving or disproving an idea that aroused initial skepticism, and that still has difficult implications for some. It remains one of the big successes of medicine that exploited both established medical science dating back to the nineteenth century and new molecular genetic science during a time of transition in medicine. Presents a comprehensive, up-to-date review of the role of HPV in cancer from those involved in its study Includes the way evidence on the role and utility of HPV based prevention has been accumulated over almost 40 years Gives a series of vignettes of individual scientists involved in the development of the science of HPV and cancer at different stages and their experiences and reasons for involvement

Book Description :

In recent years, papillomaviruses in general and human papillo maviruses in particular have been recognized as possible agents of important diseases, including some forms of human cancer. The purpose of this book is to present a concise panorama of the pre sent status of knowledge of this topic. This knowledge is as impor tant to molecular biologists and virologists as it is to clinicians and pathologists. To bridge the gap among these diverse groups of investigators, we conceived of a book covering a broad spectrum of the basic scientific, clinical, and pathological aspects of diseases associated with papillomaviruses. Although the principal thrust of this book is directed at human papillomaviruses, fundamental knowledge of animal viruses is essential to the current understand ing of the molecular mechanisms of cell transformation. For this reason, a chapter on animal viruses has also been included. Some of the experimental work having to do with the elucidation of transformation and other aspects of interaction between the virus and the cell cannot be based on human papillomaviruses because of a lack of suitable experimental models. Hence, some of the chapters dealing with fundamental aspects of viral molecular biol ogy are based on animal models. We were very fortunate in having persuaded a number of distin guished colleagues to contribute to this work.

HPV infections are responsible for almost all cases of genital warts and are also responsible for multiple cancer in different regions of the body. Several studies on HPV diagnosis and vaccine development are in progress. Recently, two commercial vaccines such as Gardasil and Cervarix have been used to prevent HPV infections. Various drugs have also been tested in clinical trials for the treatment of HPV-related cancers. HPV infections: Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment provides a comprehensive overview of diagnosis, prevention and treatment in HPV-related infections. Chapters cover a large range of topics including HPV epidemiology, molecular biology, transmission, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment along with information about preclinical and clinical experiments. This book is intended as a comprehensive handbook for medical students and residents who require information about HPV and the treatment of HPV related diseases.

Book Description :

The etiologic involvement of specific human papillomavirus (HPV) types in cancer of the cervix and their role in a substantial proportion of other anogenital cancers and cancers of the oropharynx (most prominently cancers of the tonsils and of the larynx) label HPV as a prime target for the analysis of mechanisms leading to the development of malignant tumors in humans. As in other viral infections linked to human cancers, HPV infection is not sufficient for the induction of malignant growth. It emerges, however, as the main factor, introducing new genes into the latently infected cells whose function as oncogenes have become clearly established during the past few years. The regulation of their expression by specific host cell proteins, stimulated by intra- and intercellular signals, seems to represent a primary defense mechanism against the induction of unrestricted growth. The failure of this host cell control system, on the other hand, by mutational changes affecting the host cell genome appears to predispose for malignant conversion. This volume summarizes various aspects of HPV research and its relationship to human cancers and provides an overview of current topics in an exciting research field.

Book Description :

A Groundbreaking Guide to the HPV Vaccine and the Science, Safety, and Business Behind It Cancer strikes fear in people’s hearts around globe. So the appearance of a vaccine to prevent cancer–as we are assured the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will–seemed like a game-changer. Since 2006, over eighty countries have approved the vaccine, with glowing endorsements from the world’s foremost medical authorities. Bringing in over $2.5 billion in annual sales, the HPV vaccine is a pharmaceutical juggernaut. Yet scandal now engulfs it worldwide. The HPV Vaccine on Trial is a shocking tale, chronicling the global efforts to sell and compel this alleged miracle. The book opens with the vaccine’s invention, winds through its regulatory labyrinths, details the crushing denial and dismissal of reported harms and deaths, and uncovers the enormous profits pharma and inventors have reaped. Authors Holland, Mack Rosenberg, and Iorio drill down into the clinical trial data, government approvals, advertising, and personal accounts of egregious injuries that have followed in countries as far-flung as Japan, Australia, Colombia, India, Ireland, the U.K. and Denmark. The authors have written an unprecedented exposé about this vaunted vaccine. Written in plain language, the book is for everyone concerned – parents, patients, doctors, nurses, scientists, healthcare organizations, government officials, and schools. Ultimately, this book is not just about the HPV vaccine, but about how industry, government, and medical authorities may be putting the world’s children in harm’s way.

Book Description :

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is incredibly common and is what causes ordinary skin warts. Tens of millions of Americans have it and never know it, since it may reveal no symptoms and can go away on its own. Yet the sexually transmitted strains of HPV may cause genital warts and, in some cases, may lead to cancer of the cervix, vagina, anus, vulva, or penis. Almost half of all sexually-active people will be infected with HPV at some point in their life. Abstinence or safe sex in a committed relationship is the best way to reduce chances of infection, and women should receive regular Pap smears to screen for cervical cancer. Young women (under the age of 18) could consider receiving the new HPV vaccine to prevent infection and related cancers. This book spells out all this material in a sympathetic, non-judgmental, even-handed, agenda-less manner, simply seeking to get the best information available into the hands of teens and empower them to make safe and educated decisions about their bodies and their health.
