Book Description :

Summarizes recent research and refers to primary sources, with the intention to counter over-simplified views of the monolithic totalitarian Nazi state. Ch. 9 (pp. 183-202), "The Persecution of the Jews in Germany and Foreign Lands, " sketches the history of antisemitism (particularly in Germany), describing the transition from religious to racial antisemitism and the increase in antisemitism after World War I. Surveys Nazi anti-Jewish policy after 1933 and the Final Solution. In reference to the "historians' debate, " concludes that whereas the functionalist theory may explain other aspects of the Nazi state, "in antisemitic policy documentary evidence leads us back to intentionalism."

Book Description :

"The largest enterprise in the capitalist world between 1920 and 1945, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (German National Railway), was at the centre of events in a period of great turmoil in Germany. Alfred Mierzejewski reveals the history of the railway's operations throughout Hitler's regime, showing that, despite resisting efforts to politicise its internal functions, it co-operated with the government's anti-Semitic policies. The railway played a crucial role in the Holocaust: not only did it support the construction and operation of the Nazi death camps, but it transported 3 million Jews to them to be destroyed."--Back cover.

Book Description :

Perhaps no modern-day leader of the Roman Catholic Church has sparked as much controversy as Pope Pius XII, the Bishop of Rome during World War II. Was he a Nazi sympathizer? Or did he vehemently oppose Hitler's regime? The conflicting opinions about Pius XII's wartime performance indicate not only the complexities of the man, the former Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, but also the difficulty in understanding the Hitler era and the inherent conflict between political posturing and pastoral actions. With exacting scholarship, Professor Ron Rychlak gives a full exploration of the background facts, including discussions of history, religion, politics, diplomacy, and military tactics. Then come ten fundamental questions concerning Pope Pius XII and the Nazis which are answered with legal analysis and authoritative citation. The epilogue provides a critical examination of John Cornwell's recent book on the same topic, Hitler's Pope: the Secret History of Pius XII. - Back cover.

Book Description :

KEYNOTE: Introduction by Eleanor Hancock is a Senior Lecturer in History at the ustralian Defence Force Academy, University of New South Wales. In the Nazi rise to power a key role was played by the Nazi storm troopers -the SA. This was a paramilitary organization designed for defence of Nazi Party meetings and attacks on its political opponents. It formed the workforce for Nazi political activity in the lead up to the takeover of power in 1933. Despite its pivotal role until 1934, when it was purged and rendered politically powerless by Hitler, the SA has been surprisingly understudied by historians. Wilfred von Oven's Nazism was linked with the career of Josef Goebbels, both as propaganda minister and as Nazi party regional leader of Berlin in the early 1930s. Von Oven's experience was of the SA in Berlin, perhaps the most extreme of the SA branches. The book is most valuable when it recounts von Oven's own experiences in the SA, his own views at the time and his personal encounters with Goebbels. This fascinating history is an unapologetic defence of the SA against postwar revelations - the author presents a strongly pro-SA point of view. Von Oven remained unrepentant to the end: indeed, not long before his death he described his experience of Nazi rule as 'paradise'. AUTHOR: Wilfred von Oven was born in Bolivia in 1912 to German parents. He served as personal press adjutant to Josef Goebbels during 1943-45. He went into hiding after the war, and fled in 1951 to Argentina. He died there, unrepentant, in 2008. ILLUSTRATIONS 8 pages of b/w plates
