Book Description :

The number of elderly people relying on formal long-term care services is dramatically increasing year after year, and the challenge of ensuring the quality and financial stability of care provision is one faced by governments in both the developed and developing world. This edited book is the first to provide a comprehensive international survey of long-term care provision and regulation, built around a series of case studies from Europe, North America and Asia. The analytical framework allows the different approaches that countries have adopted to be compared side by side and readers are encouraged to consider which quality assurance approaches might best meet their own country's needs. Wider issues underpinning the need to regulate the quality of long-term care are also discussed. This timely book is a valuable resource for policymakers working in the health care sector, researchers and students taking graduate courses on health policy and management.

Book Description :

International cooperation has developed rapidly on a wide range of policy areas in the last decades. National governments have learned to look across national borders in order to improve their policy systems, as in the case of health care, the subject of this book. There is a need to compare policy results, and therefore international comparison of statistical data is of great importance. For decades, international organisations like OECD and WHO have collected and distributed statistical information of member states in order to describe developments within these countries. However, comparability across countries has always been problematic. The task of international comparison of statistical data has only reluctantly been adopted due to difficulties caused by differences in definition and methods of data collection. In this book a method is presented for the advancement of international comparison of health care. Starting points are the determination of the boundaries of national health care systems and the activities that take place within these boundaries. This book is meant for all those working in the international health care field or interested in international comparison, who want to be aware of the pitfalls of international comparison and who want to learn, from the described experiences, how to solve problems of comparability.

Book Description :

In an age of spiraling costs, it is no surprise that health care policy and health care systems are now among the most hotly debated and controversial topics in many countries of the world today. The issue is literally one of life-and-death, and affects millions across the globe as they struggle to answer the question of who pays for their health care. This book explores the health care systems of Denmark, Germany and Sweden, and compares them with the system in the United States through 30 first-hand case reports by advanced medical students taking part in an international exchange program. It also describes how these health care systems have developed and how they differ which are essential background reading for anyone making decisions on health care policy in these countries. The aim is to provide a resource for professors and students of public health policy, medicine, nursing, allied health professions, social sciences and other disciplines as they explore the social, political and cultural effects on health care and health care systems. The case studies are also interesting and provide ample food-for-thought for the general readership who are the end-users of health care and who are often able to influence public health policy.

Book Description :

This concise reference provides a one-stop point of research that examines major aspects of health care systems for over 190 countries worldwide. In a consistent format, ten major health care categories are systematically examined for each country: 1. Emergency Health Services; 2. Costs of Hospitalization; 3. Costs of Drugs; 4. Major Health Issues; 5. Government Role in Health Care; 6. Insurance; 7. Access to Health Care; 8. Health Care Facilities; 9. Health Care Personnel (doctor level of training, etc.); and 10. Public Health Programs. The volume is organized in alphabetical order of country names. Each country is presented on a two- or three-page spread with the same descriptive and statistical content, allowing readers to compare health care systems from country to country. For example, a reader may compare costs of drugs in France versus the United States versus Canada. Each country spread will feature short entries on the ten health care categories accompanied by charts, table, and photos as appropriate. The work culminates as a unique and essential resource for pre-med and medical students, as well as researchers in sociology, economics, and the health management fields.

Book Description :

Most of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries will face an ageing process of their populations over the next four decades. However, these processes differ considerably among the different countries. This book analyzes how the demographic changes affect the social health insurance systems and their finances in six selected OECD countries â?? namely Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the US â?? over the long run, using the method of generational accounting. A focus is also set on the fiscal consequences of the medical/technical progress. It can be stated that all analyzed programs will have discrepancies between their expected revenues and transfer payments. The demographic component is only the minor part given that the medical/technical progress will occur in the future like it did over the last three decades. However, the growth rate due, to the medical/technical progress, also differs significantly between the analyzed countries. The book concludes that all systems will have to face òrigorous reforms.

Book Description :

"A ground breaking set of case studies about how [health care] coverage decisions are made" Robert A. Berenson M.D. Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute, Washington D.C. and former Director of the Center for Health Plans and Providers of the Medicare program Developed countries are facing rapidly rising health care costs and one of the major factors driving health care cost growth is the continual development and diffusion of new, generally more expensive, health care technologies. This book contains: * A description of the institutions, procedures and criteria used by eight countries for assessing technologies for public insurance coverage * An analysis of the role of interest groups, and of the public interest, in these decision making processes * An examination of how particular technologies are treated differently by different countries, and why Based upon research from Australia, Canada, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, the contributors argue that although each of these countries is committed to evidence-based scientific assessment of technologies, in fact adoption of technologies is significantly affected by political considerations, and in particular by the influence of interest groups. Moreover, it offers recommendations as to how technology assessment for coverage policy can be improved to serve better the public interest. Health Care Coverage Determinations is essential reading for health policy makers, managers, researchers and students with an interest in health economics, health care provision and the politics affecting health care legislation. Book Description :

This book presents the health reform experiences over the past three decades of twelve small and medium-sized nations that are not often included in international comparative studies in this field. The major conclusion of the study is that despite many similarities in policy goals, policy challenges and in the menu of policy options for countries that seek to offer universal coverage to their population, the health reforms of the nations in this book did not converge into one direction or model. However, we found several widespread policy experiences that are relevant for others, too.For example, user fees are unpopular everywhere. Governments often try to soften the consequences by exempting large groups of users, thus largely defeating the very purpose of those fees.As a second example, the introduction of new payment modes for medical care — like the shift from fee for service to case-based payment — took much longer than originally expected everywhere, and also failed to deliver their promises of improved transparency or efficiency gains A third example is that proposals are for universal coverage often ignore the challenges of implementing new financing models that elsewhere took decades if not centuries to develop. The conclusions contain both empirical findings and theoretical conclusions of interest to policy-makers and scholars of international comparison. It is accessible for academics, healthcare managers and students as well as a wider audience of readers interested in the changes in healthcare across the world.
