Book Description :

Our goal is to develop automated methods for the segmentation of thr- dimensional biomedical images. Here, we describe the segmentation of c- focal microscopy images of bee brains (20 individuals) by registration to one or several atlas images. Registration is performed by a highly parallel imp- mentation of an entropy-based nonrigid registration algorithm using B-spline transformations. We present and evaluate different methods to solve the cor- spondence problem in atlas based registration. An image can be segmented by registering it to an individual atlas, an average atlas, or multiple atlases. When registering to multiple atlases, combining the individual segmentations into a ?nalsegmentationcanbeachievedbyatlasselection, ormulticlassi?erdecision fusion. Wedescribeallthesemethodsandevaluatethesegmentationaccuracies that they achieve by performing experiments with electronic phantoms as well as by comparing their outputs to a manual gold standard. The present work is focused on the mathematical and computational t- ory behind a technique for deformable image registration termed Hyperelastic Warping, and demonstration of the technique via applications in image regist- tion and strain measurement. The approach combines well-established prin- ples of nonlinear continuum mechanics with forces derived directly from thr- dimensional image data to achieve registration. The general approach does not require the de?nition of landmarks, ?ducials, or surfaces, although it can - commodate these if available. Representative problems demonstrate the robust and ?exible nature of the approach. Three-dimensional registration methods are introduced for registering MRI volumes of the pelvis and prostate. The chapter ?rst reviews the applications, xi xii Preface challenges, and previous methods of image registration in the prostate.

Medical image analysis using advanced fuzzy set theoretic techniques is an exciting and dynamic branch of image processing. Since the introduction of fuzzy set theory, there has been an explosion of interest in advanced fuzzy set theories—such as intuitionistic fuzzy and Type II fuzzy set—that represent uncertainty in a better way. Medical Image Processing: Advanced Fuzzy Set Theoretic Techniques deals with the application of intuitionistic fuzzy and Type II fuzzy set theories for medical image analysis. Designed for graduate and doctorate students, this higher-level text: Provides a brief introduction to advanced fuzzy set theory, fuzzy/intuitionistic fuzzy aggregation operators, and distance/similarity measures Covers medical image enhancement using advanced fuzzy sets, including MATLAB®-based examples to increase contrast of the images Describes intuitionistic fuzzy and Type II fuzzy thresholding techniques that separate different regions/leukocyte types/abnormal lesions Demonstrates the clustering of unwanted lesions/regions even in the presence of noise by applying intuitionistic fuzzy clustering Highlights the edges of poorly illuminated images and uses intuitionistic fuzzy edge detection to find the edges of different regions Defines fuzzy mathematical morphology and explores its application using the Lukasiewicz operator, t-norms, and t-conorms Medical Image Processing: Advanced Fuzzy Set Theoretic Techniques is useful not only for students, but also for teachers, engineers, scientists, and those interested in the field of medical image analysis. A basic knowledge of fuzzy set is required, along with a solid understanding of mathematics and image processing.

Book Description :

The field of medical imaging seen rapid development over the last two decades and has consequently revolutionized the way in which modern medicine is practiced. Diseases and their symptoms are constantly changing therefore continuous updating is necessary for the data to be relevant. Diseases fall into different categories, even a small difference in symptoms may result in categorising it in a different group altogether. Thus analysing data accurately is of critical importance. This book concentrates on diagnosing diseases like cancer or tumor from different modalities of images. This book is divided into the following domains: Importance of big data in medical imaging, pre-processing, image registration, feature extraction, classification and retrieval. It is further supplemented by the medical analyst for a continuous treatment process. The book provides an automated system that could retrieve images based on user’s interest to a point of providing decision support. It will help medical analysts to take informed decisions before planning treatment and surgery. It will also be useful to researchers who are working in problems involved in medical imaging.

Book Description :

Deep Learning (DL) is a method of machine learning, running over Artificial Neural Networks, that uses multiple layers to extract high-level features from large amounts of raw data. Deep Learning methods apply levels of learning to transform input data into more abstract and composite information. Handbook for Deep Learning in Biomedical Engineering: Techniques and Applications gives readers a complete overview of the essential concepts of Deep Learning and its applications in the field of Biomedical Engineering. Deep learning has been rapidly developed in recent years, in terms of both methodological constructs and practical applications. Deep Learning provides computational models of multiple processing layers to learn and represent data with higher levels of abstraction. It is able to implicitly capture intricate structures of large-scale data and is ideally suited to many of the hardware architectures that are currently available. The ever-expanding amount of data that can be gathered through biomedical and clinical information sensing devices necessitates the development of machine learning and AI techniques such as Deep Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks to process and evaluate the data. Some examples of biomedical and clinical sensing devices that use Deep Learning include: Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Magnetic Particle Imaging, EE/MEG, Optical Microscopy and Tomography, Photoacoustic Tomography, Electron Tomography, and Atomic Force Microscopy.
