Book Description :

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In 1967, after a session with a psychiatrist she'd never seen before, eighteen-year-old Susanna Kaysen was put in a taxi and sent to McLean Hospital. Her memoir of the next two years is a "poignant, honest ... triumphantly funny ... and heartbreaking story" (The New York Times Book Review). The ward for teenage girls in the McLean psychiatric hospital was as renowned for its famous clientele—Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, James Taylor, and Ray Charles—as for its progressive methods of treating those who could afford its sanctuary. Kaysen's memoir encompasses horror and razor-edged perception while providing vivid portraits of her fellow patients and their keepers. It is a brilliant evocation of a "parallel universe" set within the kaleidoscopically shifting landscape of the late sixties. Girl, Interrupted is a clear-sighted, unflinching document that gives lasting and specific dimension to our definitions of sane and insane, mental illness and recovery.

Book Description :

Nora Ephron and Allie Brosh fans take note: Alisa Jones' memoir Gotham Girl Interrupted is a smart stand-up comedy about the power of falling down. "Get to your safe spaces, people. Here comes the shimmer..." From irreverent NYC blogger Alisa Kennedy Jones comes an account of her "misadventures in motherhood, love, and epilepsy" that James Patterson calls "smart, harrowing, heart-warming, and very funny." What do Da Vinci, Agatha Christie, and blogger Alisa Kennedy Jones have in common? If you said "timeless artistic genius", stop sucking up--the answer is ecstatic epilepsy. In this hilarious and moving dispatch from the frontlines of neurodiversity, Jones chronicles life with these terrifying-yet-beautiful grand mal seizures. Characteristic of Jones's condition are attacks which leave her with what Zen Buddhists sometimes refer to as a "beginner's mind": a vast, open expanse of headspace, coupled with a creative euphoria. With bracing candor and humility, Jones describes living with chronic illness, single motherhood, and her day-to-day life as a hapless writer in NYC. Above all, Jones reminds us to fight the battle for becoming who we are supposed to be--no matter how much flopping around on the ground and wetting ourselves we have to do to get there.

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3 (A), Technical University of Braunschweig (English Seminar), course: HS Film and Literature, 3 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "You spent nearly two years in a loony bin! Why in the world were you there? I can't believe it!' Translation: If you're crazy, then I'm crazy, and I'm not, so the whole thing must have been a mistake (125)." How do we know whether someone is insane or sane? Susanna Kaysen's account Girl, Interrupted is told to us through the eyes of a girl who is diagnosed with a borderline personality disorder- can we believe the things she is telling us, or are her memories distorted by her mental illness? The unreliability of the first-person-narrator is not only a question when dealing with the book, but it is also an interesting aspect to consider when taking a closer look at the cinematic version of Girl, Interrupted. In order to analyze how Kaysen's literary work was adapted, I will first shortly introduce the book and the movie. Then I will compare the two works with regard to narrative perspective, plot and time frame, characters, and cultural background.

There's so little information I have. I know they were living together, and then she thought that was not for her. And boom, thats when she realized she was pregnant with me and she stuck around. The rest is just my part of the storythe part I lived and I remember, which is painful with a lot of sorrow to get me to the place I am now, the place I shouldnt be though it is where I am forever.

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “[An] exceedingly complex, inventive, resourceful examination of harm and power.” —The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice “A lightning rod . . . brilliantly crafted.”—The Washington Post A most anticipated book by The New York Times • USA Today • Entertainment Weekly • Marie Claire • Elle • Harper's Bazaar • Bustle • Newsweek • New York Post • Esquire • Real Simple • The Sunday Times • The Guardian Exploring the psychological dynamics of the relationship between a precocious yet naïve teenage girl and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, a brilliant, all-consuming read that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer. 2000. Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful forty-two-year-old English teacher. 2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due. Strane has been accused of sexual abuse by a former student, who reaches out to Vanessa, and now Vanessa suddenly finds herself facing an impossible choice: remain silent, firm in the belief that her teenage self willingly engaged in this relationship, or redefine herself and the events of her past. But how can Vanessa reject her first love, the man who fundamentally transformed her and has been a persistent presence in her life? Is it possible that the man she loved as a teenager—and who professed to worship only her—may be far different from what she has always believed? Alternating between Vanessa’s present and her past, My Dark Vanessa juxtaposes memory and trauma with the breathless excitement of a teenage girl discovering the power her own body can wield. Thought-provoking and impossible to put down, this is a masterful portrayal of troubled adolescence and its repercussions that raises vital questions about agency, consent, complicity, and victimhood. Written with the haunting intimacy of The Girls and the creeping intensity of Room, My Dark Vanessa is an era-defining novel that brilliantly captures and reflects the shifting cultural mores transforming our relationships and society itself.

Book Description :

Susanna Kaysen, who wrote about her teenage depression in the bestseller Girl, Interrupted, now takes on another taboo: her vagina–which suddenly and inexplicably starts to hurt. And neither Kaysen’s cheery gynecologist, nor her internist, nor a laconic “vulvologist” has the cure. An alternative health nurse suggests direct application of tea, baking soda, and boric acid. Others recommend novocaine, oatmeal, “bio-feedback,” and anti-depressants. Nothing works. As sex becomes more and more painful, Kaysen’s relationship with her boyfriend disintegrates and she turns to her best friends, her wicked sense of humor, and finally wry self-reflection to get herself through. Using this unusual lens, Kaysen challenges us to think in new ways about the centrality and power of sexuality. The Camera My Mother Gave Me is an unexpected and revelatory book from one of our most candid, insightful and consistently surprising writers.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Innsbruck (Institut für Amerikastudien), course: On the Edge of Sanity: Mental Illness and Disordered Behavior in American Literature, language: English, abstract: In her autobiographical novel Girl, Interrupted Susanna Kaysen deals with the probably most difficult and influential period in her life. At the end of the 1960s, when she was eighteen, she was committed to a mental institution after a half-hearted suicide attempt and diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. She spent two years at McLean, where also famous persons like Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Robert Lowell and Ray Charles have been in treatment. This paper will be trying to point out the difficulties with which people, especially women, were confronted in the 1960s, when they were different in some way and how this could result in being caught in a kind of parallel universe or, even worse, being stuck in between two worlds and not knowing were they belong.

Book Description :

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A searing, deeply moving memoir of illness and recovery that traces one young woman’s journey from diagnosis to remission to re-entry into “normal” life—from the author of the Life, Interrupted column in The New York Times ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, The Rumpus, She Reads, Library Journal, Booklist • “I was immersed for the whole ride and would follow Jaouad anywhere. . . . Her writing restores the moon, lights the way as we learn to endure the unknown.”—Chanel Miller, The New York Times Book Review “Beautifully crafted . . . affecting . . . a transformative read . . . Jaouad’s insights about the self, connectedness, uncertainty and time speak to all of us.”—The Washington Post In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world.” She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch—first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Next came the exhaustion, and the six-hour naps that only deepened her fatigue. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival. Just like that, the life she had imagined for herself had gone up in flames. By the time Jaouad flew home to New York, she had lost her job, her apartment, and her independence. She would spend much of the next four years in a hospital bed, fighting for her life and chronicling the saga in a column for The New York Times. When Jaouad finally walked out of the cancer ward—after countless rounds of chemo, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant—she was, according to the doctors, cured. But as she would soon learn, a cure is not where the work of healing ends; it’s where it begins. She had spent the past 1,500 days in desperate pursuit of one goal—to survive. And now that she’d done so, she realized that she had no idea how to live. How would she reenter the world and live again? How could she reclaim what had been lost? Jaouad embarked—with her new best friend, Oscar, a scruffy terrier mutt—on a 100-day, 15,000-mile road trip across the country. She set out to meet some of the strangers who had written to her during her years in the hospital: a teenage girl in Florida also recovering from cancer; a teacher in California grieving the death of her son; a death-row inmate in Texas who’d spent his own years confined to a room. What she learned on this trip is that the divide between sick and well is porous, that the vast majority of us will travel back and forth between these realms throughout our lives. Between Two Kingdoms is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.

Book Description :

What would you write locked in a psych ward? G. I. T. I. W. T. T. P. W. S. Y. D. H. T. was written over the course of the final 19 of 23 days spent inpatient at the NY Presbyterian Westchester Campus Psych Ward between November and December, 2020. It's poetry, scrutiny, self reflection, prophecy, love, fear, darkness, light. It captures the state of the mental health system and readers keep Heather company as she writes away the hours. She plays with concepts of time and space, rewrites We Didn't Start the Fire into We Didn't Start the Crazy, swoons over a relationship, faces all things that are making her anxious, introduces all things that came at intake and much from onsite workshops. This is a snapshot of a moment in time in psychiatric care, 23 days of incarceration against her will and randomly medicated. She had not planned to be an inpatient in a psych ward, but has no memory from 3pm Nov 21st until 1:30pm Nov 22nd. She was taken by ambulance to the NY Presbyterian on Gold Street in New York City's Financial District from a hotel where she had spent two nights. The hospital subsequently released her at 4:00pm and she returned without any belongings or even the coat on her back or glasses on her face at 5:30pm. She was sedated until Nov 22nd 1:30pm and was told she was being taken to a psychiatric facility. Heavily sedated, she had absolutely no control over this decision. The first week there she had no glasses, though she made arrangements to receive contact lenses Nov 25th, they were received but held until November 30th."The facility was pleasant and even has a pool during the summer. Most all rooms were single instead of double it being quarantine, there were two large tvs and the food was good despite the constant rotation."23 days is longer than the typical stay and Heather was told they were extending her stay due to the extenuating circumstances of her arrival at the Gold Street location. It's all a mystery. A day disappeared cost 23 days of her life. This is the background of the writing. At least something has come of the stay. H.R.H. works as an artist @hrh.nyc in Brooklyn, where she enjoys the company of her betta fish Mojo, an abundance of plantlife, and the sparrows and doves that come to her fire escape. She has been writing poetry since she spoke her first words, "Look my new blue shoes!" She was a slam poet in the New York scene circa 1999-2001. This is the first assembled and polished novel that she has published solo. She has one additional book on Amazon, a translation of The Book of the Law. She hopes everyone can see the hope in these words amidst the struggles with time, family and love. Additionally, H.R.H. is the Principal Broker at Realestatic, a Commercial Real Estate Firm in Williamsburg Brooklyn. You may also know her as an artist, having had solo abstract art shows at Space 776 and at a coworking space in Brooklyn. Maybe you went to one of her gallery events at Club 157 circa 2016-17, or her involvement in Northern Brooklyn, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce or Greenpoint Chamber of Commerce. Over the years she boasts membership in a wide variety of societies and associations. She is a graduate of the Zicklin School of Business of Baruch in Entrepreneurial Management with minors in Corporate Social Responsibility, Information Technology and Advanced Business Analysis. Heather graduated Baruch in 2016. She has previously been a student at Fordham University, Scranton University, Keystone University, The Ivy Institute and The New York Real Estate Institute. She maintains both a real estate broker license and insurance broker license. In her free time she is working on her own concept of the perfectly functioning urban environment."Publishing my work is an exercise in visibility. May we all be visible and see others. May this be the start of something wonderful."

Book Description :

First published in 1993, The Virgin Suicides announced the arrival of a major new American novelist. In a quiet suburb of Detroit, the five Lisbon sisters—beautiful, eccentric, and obsessively watched by the neighborhood boys—commit suicide one by one over the course of a single year. As the boys observe them from afar, transfixed, they piece together the mystery of the family’s fatal melancholy, in this hypnotic and unforgettable novel of adolescent love, disquiet, and death. Jeffrey Eugenides evokes the emotions of youth with haunting sensitivity and dark humor and creates a coming-of-age story unlike any of our time. Adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola, The Virgin Suicides is a modern classic, a lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life.
