Book Description :

This book is the proceedings of the 11th Kongsberg seminar, held at the Norwegian Mining Museum in the city of Kongsberg, about 70 km Southwest of Oslo. The Kongs berg district is known for numerous Permian vein deposits, rich in native silver. Mining activity in the area lasted for more than 300 years, finally ceasing in 1957. The first eight Kongsberg seminars, organized by professor Arne Bj0rlykke, now director of the Norwegian Geological Survey, were focused on ore-forming processes. These seminars have always been a meeting point for people with a variety of geological backgrounds. Since 1995, the Kongsberg seminars have focussed on geological processes, rather than on specific geological systems, and the selection of invited speakers has been strongly influenced by their interest in the dynamics of geological systems. In 1995 and 1996, various aspects of fluid flow and transport in rocks, were emphasized. The first "Kongsberg proceedings" (of the 1995 seminar) published by Chapman and Hall (Jamtveit and Yardley, 1997) contained 17 chapters dealing with a wide range of topics from field based studies of the effects of fluid flow in sedimentary and metamorphic rocks to computer simulations of flow in complex porous and fractured media. In 1997, the focus was changed to growth, and dissolution processes in geological systems.

This book is the result of collaboration within the frames of the 5th International Conference "Trigger Effects in Geosystems" held in the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics of Russian Academy of Sciences, June 2019. This book aims to raise awareness about different triggering aspects in the geosphere and its effects. The conference provided a multidisciplinary platform with a focus on (i) the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors on the geosphere, geomechanical systems and anthropogenic objects found in a subcritical state and (ii) the influence of these factors on the system “atmosphere - ionosphere”. The problems considered in the book may be interesting for a wide audience including students, professionals, researches, and for the industry.

We would like to thank Stanislav A. Molchanov and Wojbor A. Woyczynski for their hard work in organizing this meeting and in edit ing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Foundation, the Office of N aval Research, the Army Research Of fice, and the National Security Agency, whose financial support made this workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. v PREFACE A workshop on Stochastic Models in Geosystems was held during the week of May 16, 1994 at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applica tions at the University of Minnesota. It was part of the Special Year on Emerging Applications of Prob ability program put together by an organiz ing committee chaired by J. Michael Steele. The invited speakers represented a broad interdisciplinary spectrum including mathematics, statistics, physics, geophysics, astrophysics, atmo spheric physics, fluid mechanics, seismology, and oceanography. The com mon underlying theme was stochastic modeling of geophysical phenomena and papers appearing in this volume reflect a number of research directions that are currently pursued in these areas.

Book Description :

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1, University of Zurich (Swiss Banking Institute), 24 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Over the past few months, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have been on the top of many corporate agendas. Not only in the US, but also in Europe was the year 2005 sometimes referred to as “merger wave” with a number of relatively sizeable cross-border transactions. Similarly, M&A activity in Switzerland was on a four-year high, backed by a strong market performance. Given the relevance of an M&A-related topic we are interested whether cor-porate takeovers with a synergy-rationale actually benefit shareholders of the acquiring firm. We studied the case of Hexagon who acquired Leica Geosystems after a bidding battle against Danaher in 2005. Since Hexagon ended up paying a relatively high premium of 51.4% to Leica shareholders, the transaction appears illustrative to test for a positive return from a Hexagon shareholder’s perspective. If Leica’s market value were equal to the value it represents to Hexagon, the premium paid would be a good measure of the synergy benefits Hexagon expects. However, as broker targets suggest and our DCF valuation confirms, Leica shares were undervalued by the market in the period preceding the takeover announcements. Our thorough analysis will demonstrate that, as a result of Leica’s undervaluation prior to takeover announcements and due to the substantial synergy benefits that could be created through the combination, Hexagons takeover of Leica Geosystems was indeed creating shareholder value for both Hexagon and Leica shareholders.

Book Description :

Among the most important and exciting current steps forward in geo-engineering is the development of coupled numerical models. They represent the basic physics of geo-engineering processes which can include the effects of heat, water, mechanics and chemistry. Such models provide an integrating focus for the wide range of geo-engineering disciplines. The articles within this volume were originally presented at the inaugural GeoProc conference held in Stockholm and contain a collection of unusually high quality information not available elsewhere in an edited and coherent form. This collection not only benefits from the latest theoretical developments but also applies them to a number of practical and wide ranging applications. Examples include the environmental issues around radioactive waste disposal deep in rock, and the search for new reserves of oil and gas.
