Book Description :

EU-Russian energy dialogue represents a policy issue that forces us to take a serious look at several crucial questions related to the present and future of Europe such as: how can the EU area ensure its future energy security when it is running out of its own energy resources and at the same time incorporating new members who are also dependent on energy imports? This book not only outlines the overall characteristics of the energy dialogue, but also illustrates the involved policy implementation challenges by paying special attention to the regional context of northern Europe. The study contributes to diverse fields such as international relations and political science, European studies, studies on energy politics, international political economy, post-Soviet politics, and literature on regionalization and regionalisms, with a special reference to northern Europe.

Book Description :

The Future of Energy 2021 Edition - The guide to sustainability, renewable energy, climate change and the energy transition. The 'Future of Energy' is written to be accessible for anyone interested in learning more about energy. Substantially updated in 2021 to reflect the impact of Covid-19 on the world of energy, the book takes the reader through a future for energy generation, transportation, and utilisation. Concise and comprehensive, the book brings together discussion on energy and thoughts on the range of topics which form the fulcrum of the challenges ahead of us including climate change, hydrogen, heat, sustainability, and renewable energy. Written to spark ideas, discussion and debate the 'Future of Energy' engages the reader in the future challenges and opportunities of this hugely exciting and important field. Background There exists a huge range of information on the 'energy transition' with competing technologies and theories vying for supremacy. It is easy to fall into the trap of believing there is an easy answer or 'silver bullet' to the huge challenges we face. It is substantially more complicated with an inevitable patchwork of future technologies, rather than a single simple solution. There is no perfect answer to the challenges we face but most will in some way shape the way we use energy through the next decade and beyond. About the author John Armstrong is an engineer whose career has spanned the extremes of the energy industry - giving him a front-row seat on the energy roller-coaster. He began his career constructing oil refineries before moving to work across fossil and renewable electricity generation. John lives in Bath in the United Kingdom with his wife and two children. Reviews for the 'Future of Energy' books by John Armstrong Concise while being comprehensive. Thorough but with a bit of a personal perspective that makes it interesting. Realistic about the challenges but with a dose of optimism about what could be done. Well-informed but accessible. David Elmes, Professor, Warwick Business School, Sept 2020. I would highly recommend this book to anybody working within energy or interested in learning more about the movement towards clean energy. I'd been looking for a book like this for years but couldn't find anything that wasn't a chunky textbook. Amazon Review, August 2020 A very good guide to the challenges the energy industry faces today. I will be recommending it to all my team to get up to speed with the industry - incredibly accessible in how the ideas are laid out. Seb, Energy Conference Producer, May 2020 This should be mandatory reading for future undergraduates and graduates as part of our induction process. Darren, Senior Energy Manager, May 2020 The author manages to present a complex topic in an engaging and authoritative way. Andrew, May 2020

Book Description :

This book describes an accurate analysis technique for energy systems based on formal methods—computer-based mathematical logic techniques for the specification, validation, and verification of the systems. Correctness and accuracy of the financial, operational, and implementation analysis are of the paramount importance for the materialization of the future energy systems, such as smart grids, to achieve the objectives of cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and quality-of-service. In this regard, the book develops formal theories of microeconomics, asymptotic, and stability to support the formal analysis of generation and distribution cost, smart operations, and processing of energy in a smart grid. These formal theories are also employed to formally verify the cost and utility modeling for: Energy generation and distribution; Asymptotic bounds for online scheduling algorithms for plug-in electric vehicles; and Stability of the power converters for wind turbines. The proposed approach results in mechanized proofs for the specification, validation, and verification of corresponding smart grid problems. The formal mathematical theories developed can be applied to the formal analysis of several other hardware and software systems as well, making this book of interest to researchers and practicing engineers in a variety of power electronic fields.

Book Description :

Future Energy will allow us to make reasonable, logical and correct decisions on our future energy as a result of two of the most serious problems that the civilized world has to face; the looming shortage of oil (which supplies most of our transport fuel) and the alarming rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide over the past 50 years (resulting from the burning of oil, gas and coal and the loss of forests) that threatens to change the world's climate through global warming. Future Energy focuses on all the types of energy available to us, taking into account a future involving a reduction in oil and gas production and the rapidly increasing amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. It is unique in the genre of books of similar title in that each chapter has been written by a scientist or engineer who is an expert in his or her field. The book is divided into four sections: Traditional Fossil Fuel and Nuclear Energy Renewable Energy Potentially Important New Types of Energy New Aspects to Future Energy Usage Each chapter highlights the basic theory and implementation, scope, problems and costs associated with a particular type of energy. The traditional fuels are included because they will be with us for decades to come - but, we hope, in a cleaner form. The renewable energy types includes wind power, wave power, tidal energy, two forms of solar energy, bio-mass, hydroelectricity, geothermal and the hydrogen economy. Potentially important new types of energy include: pebble bed nuclear reactors, nuclear fusion, methane hydrates and recent developments in fuel cells and batteries. Written by experts in the key future energy disciplines from around the globe Details of all possible forms of energy that are and will be available globally in the next two decades Puts each type of available energy into perspective with realistic, future options

Book Description :

"The workshop "Energy Roadmap 2050: EU External policies for future energy security", organised by the Policy Department of DG External Policies for the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), took place on November 5th, 2012 in the European Parliament. It aimed at facilitating an exchange of views about the energetic context and the future perspectives of the global market and European energy security. The participants discussed the parameters of the international energetic scene: the rise of shale gas exploitation and its economic, ecological and geopolitical impacts; the development of the European internal market rules; the future negotiations on climate change. The EU's energetic future was obviously the main topic and was treated through the analysis of the three pillars of energy policy: security of supply, competitive market conditions and sustainability. The accent was put on the consequences of the US's growing independency on oil and gas due to the exploitation of shale gas deposits. This recent development is likely to have huge mid-term repercussions on global oil, coal and gas prices and to widen the competitiveness gap between the US and Europe. The climate change issue and the possibility to create the conditions for a new international agreement were discussed, as well as the future perspectives of renewable energy development. The proficiency of the European Trading Scheme and the research on energy efficiency and carbon capture storage technology were debated. The speakers also insisted on the fact that the full implementation of internal market rules would have a crucial influence on the construction process of the European energy policy. They pointed out the need to strengthen and extend these norms through the development of the European Energy Community Treaty. Regarding the European energy security, the partnership with Russia, the main supplier of many EU member states, was stressed by the speakers, even though one of the main objectives of the emerging European energy policy is to reduce its dependency on a single source of supply by diversifying its roads and sources of supply. The participants analysed the case of the southern corridor, which is seen as a viable solution, so as to have a clear view of the EU's future options, despite the fact that Nabucco seems to be in a stalemate. Various scenarios were presented, with the aim to highlight the need for a reinforcement of European solidarity through the strengthening of the internal market rules and the consolidation of integration. Finally, the participants called for common views and works on these issues, the resolution of which is crucial for the EU's energetic future."--Executive summary, p. 6.
