Mineral fillers are used in industrial manufacturing processes to extend raw materials and cut costs, and more recently sometimes used for their functionality and other mineral-specific qualities. Mineral additives are widespread in industrial manufacturing processes. Another rapidly emerging technological area is that of nanoscale minerals. This emergence of nanoscale minerals parallels the global pursuit of nanotechnology; the use of nanoscale minerals will undoubtedly play an important role in low-cost, high-performance application of nanotechnology. The Functional Fillers and Nanoscale Minerals Symposium was first introduced at the 2003 SME Annual Meeting. The success of the first symposium led to the second symposium of the same name at the 2006 SME Annual Meeting.

Book Description :

This book originated from my Publisher's request for anew, concise account of PVC plastics in terms of their nature, properties, process ing, and applications. There is thus, inevitably, an extensive thematic overlap with my-still relatively recent-PVC Technology (4th edi tion), and I have drawn liberally on that source for a substantial amount of relevant basic material. However, the present book is by no means merely an abridgement of the earlier one: whilst indeed considerably shorter, it is not only comparable in scope and general coverage of the subject, but also contains much new information. I have made a point of again strongly featuring the numerous standards relevant-and in many cases cardinal-to the testing and characterisa tion of PVC materials and products, and to the evaluation of their properties and performance: these standards are an indispensable part of the technology of PVC plastics, and nobody concerned with any aspect of this complex subject should fail to recognise that fact. It is ever a pleasure to express appreciation and thanks where they are due. I am grateful to Dipl-Ing. H. E. Luben of Brabender OHG, Duisburg, FRG, not only for the up-to-date information he provided on Brabender equipment, but also most particularly for his exception ally friendly, helpful attitude in all our contacts, and for the trouble he took to make some illustrations and figures available in the form convenient for direct reproduction.

Book Description :

New smart materials are developing thanks to nanotechnology. Many books are on the market, but the demand for specialized analyses of particular topics still remains. This multiauthor book focuses on the application of nanotechnology to cement-based materials for engineering applications. The addition of novel smart nanofillers allows the development of multifunctional composite materials and not just with respect to higher mechanical strength, as investigated in the past. Special attention is given to types of nanoinclusions, novel techniques to mix components, and analysis of properties that can be achieved by paste, mortar, or concrete if they are added with nanofillers. Among these properties, the capability of self-sensing is very promising. Moreover, the use of phase-changing materials improves energy efficiency of nanocomposites, with important applications in the field of engineering, and new nanomodified composites have applications in energy harvesting and electromagnetic shielding.

Book Description :

Growing concern over climate change has caused an increased interest in composite materials that can be used as alternatives to fossil fuel derived materials. While plastics are a versatile material, the large quantity of emissions released during production as well as their lack of degradation has resulted in the need for composites that have a lower production and end-of-life impact. Industrial food waste from the food and beverage industry has the potential to act as filler material within composites due to its abundance and homogeneity while polylactic acid, a biodegradable polymer, has mechanical properties that make it suitable for use as a plastic alternative. This work explored using cranberry pomace and brewers spent grains, both raw and modified, as filler material in polylactic acid composites produced via extrusion. Processability of the food waste/polymer formulations was evaluated as was the structural and water absorption properties of the extruded filaments. This work determined that cranberry pomace can be used as filler material in polylactic acid composites although water absorption is a concern over long immersion times. Brewers spent grains were unable to be extruded although the results suggest this is due to lack of proper processing thus further study is required. The results suggest the importance of proper adhesion between the food waste and polymer prior to extrusion as well as protecting the polyphenolic compounds within the cranberry pomace through solvent washing and inclusion of soy protein isolate.

Book Description :

Although polypropylene has been marketed since the 1950s, research and development in this area is still vigorous. The consumption of polypropylene over the years has been relatively high, mainly due to the steady improvement of its property profile. Polypropylene: Structures, Blends and Composites, in three separate volumes, reflects on the key factors which have contributed to the success of polypropylene, dealing with all aspects of structure-performance relationships relevant to thermoplastic polymers and related composites. Volume 1, Structure and Morphology, deals with polymorphism in polypropylene homo- and copolymers, where molecular and supermolecular structures are covered, and the processing-induced structure development of polypropylene, showing the interrelation between the processing-induced morphology and mechanical performance. Volume 2, Copolymers and Blends, contains comprehensive surveys of the nucleation and crystallisation behaviour of the related systems. It includes the development of morphology and its effects on rheological and mechanical properties of polypropylene-based alloys and blends and a review of polypropylene-based thermoplastic elastomers. Volume 3, Composites, gives a comprehensive overview of filled and reinforced systems with polypropylene as a matrix material, with the main emphasis on processing-structure-property-interrelationships. Chapters cover all aspects of particulate filled, chopped fibre-, fibre mat- and continuous fibre-reinforced composites. Interfacial phenomena, such as adhesion, wetting and interfacial crystallisation, are also included as important aspects of this subject.

Book Description :

This book continues the tradition of the first two editions of the late W. S. Penn's original PVC Technology, and the extensively revised third (1971) edition prepared by myself and B. J. Lanham. In the present edition the original general format, and the arrange ment of chapters, have been largely preserved, but virtually nothing now remains of Penn's own text: a part of the contents is based on material from the 1971 TitowlLanham version (revised, updated and mainly rewritten): the rest is new, including, inter alia, several chapters specially contributed by experts from the plastics industry in the UK and Europe. The section listing international (ISO) and national (BS, ASTM and DIN) standards relevant to PVC, which was first intro duced (as Appendix 1) in the 1971 edition, proved a popularfeature: it has now been brought up to date and considerably extended. Two further appendices provide, respectively, comprehensive unit conver sion"tables (with additional information on some ofthe mostfrequently encountered units, and the SI units), and a list of many properties of interest in PVC materials, with definitions, typical numerical values, and references~to relevant standard test methods. For various reasons, work on this edition involved more than the usual quota of problems: I am truly grateful to the Publisher's Manag ing Editor, Mr G. B. Olley, for his understanding, patience, unfailing courtesy and friendly encouragement.

Book Description :

This book presents the most recent description of rubber reinforcement, focusing on the network-like structure formation of nanofiller in the rubber matrix under the presence of bound rubber. The resultant filler network is visualized by electron tomography applied to rubber. In the case of natural rubber, the self-reinforcement effect is uniquely functioning, and new template crystallization is suggested. Here, the crystallites are also believed to arrange themselves in a network-like manner. These results are of great use, particularly for engineers, in designing rubber reinforcement.
