This book is about neuronal networks within the brain. With roughly 100 billion nerve cells the human brain contains about 3.2 million kilometers of 'wires' to make a million billion of connections between these nerve cells. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were used on polymer network systems to elucidate the effect of heterogeneous microstructures (crystalline domains and regions with high crosslink density) that can lead to enhanced elastic behavior. Semiflexible chains were used to induce the formation of semi-crystalline microstructure. Semiflexible chains are highly entangled in their native state. These entanglements become trapped upon crosslinking and restrict chain motion. At high stress values, some chains were observed to become almost taut while others remained disordered due to entanglements. This led to prominent stress upturns and at the same time, a theoretically predicted, strain induced order-disorder transition was prevented. Upon removing the entanglements, a stepwise deformation was observed and resulted in an unusual staircase like stress-strain response with multiple discontinuities. It was found that, under stress, the chains split themselves into ordered domains separated by relatively disordered regions containing the crosslinks. This entanglement-free system was found to have important similarities to some protein molecules that also deform in steps and show remarkably high toughness. The second type of structural heterogeneity studied involved non-homogeneous crosslink densities and a bimodal chain length distribution was used to achieve this. It was found that significant clustering of the short chains and crosslinks occurred when most of the volume was occupied by the long chains while most of the mole fraction was contributed by the short chains. However, it was observed that short chain clustering resulted in no elastic improvement over pure long chain networks. Mechanical enhancement in the form of stress upturns was instead observed when the volume fraction of the short chains in the network was near their overlap concentration. These are the same conditions when clustering is very low. It was concluded that stress upturns are caused by the finite extensibility of non-clustered short chains. Finally, in a different topic, the effect of crosslink functionality on the structure and elastic behavior of polymer networks has been studied. It was found that crosslinked networks with higher functionality are stronger and the functionality effect is only noticeable when the system is not entanglement dominated.
