Book Description :

Oil field chemicals are gaining increasing importance, as the resources of crude oil are decreasing. An increasing demand of more sophisticated methods in the exploitation of the natural resources emerges for this reason. This book reviews the progress in the area of oil field chemicals and additives of the last decade from a rather chemical view. The material presented is a compilation from the literature by screening critically approximately 20,000 references. The text is ordered according to applications, just in the way how the jobs are emerging in practice. It starts with drilling, goes to productions and ends with oil spill. Several chemicals are used in multiple disciplines, and to those separate chapters are devoted. Two index registers are available, an index of chemical substances and a general index. * Gives an introduction to the chemically orientated petroleum engineer. * Provides the petroleum engineer involved with research and development with a quick reference tool. * Covers interdisciplinary matter, i.e. connects petroleum recovery and handling with chemical aspects.

Book Description :

Two geothermal test wells were drilled in January, 1983, in Antelope Canyon to access the potential for resource utilization by the City of Caliente's proposed space heating district. Both holes, drilled into bedrock at 220 feet, encountered hot water in the upper part of the hole (40 to 100 feet) and cooler water below (100 to 210 feet). Temperature-depth profiles measured in the two holes are nearly identical, and are similar to profiles measured in existing nearby wells. Lithologic logs constructed from drill chip samples reveal that a clay layer, in the vicinity of the temperature reversal, represents an aquiclude that limits fluid mixing. The diameter of well CD-l was subsequently increased from 6 inches to 14 inches to a depth of 100 feet. The well was cased with 40 feet of 8 5/8 inch diameter screen in the production zone. Well completion consisted of gravel packing, swabbing and jetting with Barafos solution to remove entrapped drilling fluids, installation of a gravel-fill tube, and cementing the upper 42 feet of the blank-cased hole. A series of pumping tests were completed in February, 1983, including pump-efficiency tests, stepped draw-down tests, and 1-, 2-, and 3-day sustained pumping tests. The test results indicated that the transmissivity of the thermal aquifer is very, very high. A pumping rate of 255 gallons per minute at 80°C (178°F) may be considered a minimum. Drawdowns of 3 to 6 feet were recovered instantly after pumping was stopped. Pumping of this well had no apparent effect on the water levels of two nearby observation wells. Significant temperature increases were recorded in both observation wells during the last few days of the tests. Five water samples were collected for chemical analyses during the course of CD-l pump tests. The samples were collected to determine the water quality for the proposed space heating district and possible reinjection, and to establish a water chemistry base-line for comparative analysis of fluid chemistry during the course of the pumping and from subsequent development. In addition, the chemical data were compared to existing analyses of thermal and non-thermal waters in Caliente. The results of these analyses indicate little or no change in composition over the period of pump testing, and demonstrate a high degree of correlation with nearby thermal fluids. The water quality meets state health standards for all chemical constituents and may be used as a source of potable water. Chemical geothermometers indicated that the maximum temperatures from this resource range from 120 to 140°C. The highest temperature measured in this resource is 96°C.

Book Description :

Sustainable world economy requires a steady supply of crude oil without any production constraints. Thus, the ever-increasing energy demand of the entire world can be mostly met through the enhanced production from crude oil from existing reservoirs. With the fact that newer reservoirs with large quantities of crude oil could not be explored at a faster pace, it will be inevitable to produce the crude oil from matured reservoirs at an affordable cost. Among alternate technologies, the chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique has promising potential to recover residual oil from matured reservoirs being subjected to primary and secondary water flooding operations. Due to pertinent complex phenomena that often have a combinatorial role and influence, the implementation of chemical EOR schemes such as alkali/surfactant/polymer flooding and their combinations necessitates upon a fundamental understanding of the potential mechanisms and their influences upon one another and desired response variables. Addressing these issues, the book attempts to provide useful screening criteria, guidelines, and rules of thumb for the identification of process parametric sets (including reservoir characteristics) and response characteristics (such as IFT, adsorption etc.,) that favor alternate chemical EOR systems. Finally, the book highlights the relevance of nanofluid/nanoparticle for conventional and unconventional reservoirs and serves as a needful resource to understand the emerging oil recovery technology. Overall, the volume will be of greater relevance for practicing engineers and consultants that wish to accelerate on field applications of chemical and nano-fluid EOR systems. Further, to those budding engineers that wish to improvise upon their technical know-how, the book will serve as a much-needed repository.

Book Description :

"The book is aimed at narrowing the gap between industrial aspects of mud engineering and its academic basics. It also sums up the experience of handling unconventional and unforeseen problems related with well-bore instability with the right composition of mud to facilitate correct properties in drilling fluid design, and thus minimize/eliminate non-productive time. If the book is able to fulfil any / all of these objectives, then the purpose of writing the book is served. It aims to reach out to petroleum engineering students and those mud engineers who have just begun their career in oil field, with many questions wandering in their minds, and aims to answer them in a manner that makes sense to their limited exposure with the least technical jargon but yet, effectively quench their thirst of inquisitiveness. For the professionals who aspire to climb the ladders of success to reach the corporate jungle, the book cautions them that what appears costly superficially need not be always costly and thus spend enough money to have a right team of professionals surrounding them and not the guys who will always agree to them for the fear of loss of their job."
