Book Description :

Written by a former director of the CIA, this is the story of America's and the agency's role in the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. As the only person to rise from entry-level analyst to Director of the CIA and to serve on the White House staffs of four Presidents, Robert Gates is uniquely qualified to tell the unprecedented inside story of the Cold War. Drawing on his access to classified information and top-level involvement in policy decisions, Gates lays bare the hidden wars and operations the United States waged against communism worldwide. Ever certain that the fifty-year struggle with the Soviet Union was indeed a war, Gates makes candid appraisals of Presidents, key officials, and policies of the period. Among his disclosures are: how Carter laid the foundations for Reagan's covert wars against the Soviets; CIA predictions of a conservative coup against Gorbachev and the collapse of the Soviet Union; CIA and KGB "black operations" against each other; the secret relationship between Pope John Paul II and the Soviets; and three secret CIA-KGB summits. From the Shadows is a classic memoir on the career of a CIA officer at the center of power during a time when the threat of global annihilation informed America's every move.

Book Description :

Twenty-five years after Richard Nixon's resignation, investigative journalist Bob Woodward examines the legacy of Watergate. Based on hundreds of interviews - both on and off the record - and three years of research of government archives, Woodward's latest book explains in detail how the premier scandal of US history has indelibly altered the shape of American politics and culture - and has limited the power to act of the presidency itself. Bob Woodward's mix of historical perspective and journalistic sleuthing provides a unique perspective on the repercussions of Watergate and proves that it was far more than a passing, embarrassing crisis in American politics: it heralded the beginning of a new period of troubled presidencies. From Ford through to Clinton, presidents have battled public scepticism, a challenging Congress, adversarial press and even special prosecutors in their term in office. Now, a quarter of a century after the scandal emerged, the man who helped expose Watergate shows us the stunning impact of its heritage.

Book Description :

“What if you set off on a vacation trip in search of history—and your destination was the men who had been president?” Asking himself that tantalizing question, bestselling author and award-winning journalist Bob Greene embarked on a long journey across the breadth of the nation, hoping to spend time with Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George Bush and Ronald Reagan. The result of his odyssey is Fraternity. Rich with the sounds of the presidents’ own voices, Fraternity is dramatic, surprising, funny, revealing, inspiring, tragic, touching and unforgettable: a story destined to be read and enjoyed not just now, but far into the future as Americans think about who we are as a people. Here is Nixon, in an unmarked office high above Manhattan, explaining the reason for his solitary walks through New York streets at 5:30 every morning. Here is Carter, riding in a Secret Service van, recalling the sting of his family’s being mocked for their rural Southern heritage, even after he had won the White House. Here is Ford, beside a golf course fairway, laughing at his startled discovery that of all his presidential papers, the one worth the most on the open market was a letter from a woman who tried to kill him. Here is Bush, on the road with his son, remembering his despair and anger at encountering a swastika carved into the sand behind an elegant resort on American soil. And here is Nancy Reagan, in a Beverly Hills hotel, on the haunting first night she must stand in for her husband after the announcement of his illness. A travelogue of the national spirit that chronicles a quest stretching over fifteen years and starring the biggest names in the modern American saga, this is living history of the most human kind, and Bob Greene at his very best.

Book Description :

“I heard one [presidential] candidate say that what this country needed was a president for the ‘90s,” Ronald Reagan once said. “I was set to run again. I thought he said a president in his 90s.” Abraham Lincoln, in one instance, was able to put a serious injury in a humorous light; in response to a young woman’s question about where a soldier was wounded, Lincoln replied, “Ma’am, the bullet that wounded him would not have wounded you.” Presidents often bring a sense of humor to the White House with them, allowing the American public to catch a glimpse of their not-so-serious sides. This book examines how five of the nation's funniest chief executives—Abraham Lincoln, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan—used wit and humor to their advantage during their terms as president, and how their management of the Executive Branch was thereby enhanced. As a bonus, the effective use of humor by several unsuccessful presidential candidates is surveyed.

"The New York Times bestselling authors of Mrs. Kennedy and Me share the stories behind the five infamous, tragic days surrounding JFK's assassination--alongside revealing and iconic photographs--published in remembrance of the beloved president on the fiftieth anniversary of his death.Clint Hill will forever be remembered as the lone secret service agent who jumped onto the car after President Kennedy was shot, clinging to its sides as it sped toward the hospital. Even now, decades after JFK's presidency, the public continues to be fascinated with the Kennedys--America's royal family. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, Hill recounts his indelible memories of those five days leading up to, and after, that tragic day in November 1963. Hill, as Jackie's guard, experienced those days firsthand. Alongside the famous photos everyone is familiar with, Hill provides a moment-to-moment narration evoking the feelings and emotions behind the images--clearing up the persistent conspiracy misconceptions along the way. He also shows us the little-seen photos of Jackie both before and after the terrible event, describing the poignant moments they shared, during that pivotal moment in history. Told movingly by a man who stillwishes he could undo it all, Five Days in November is a rare and deeply personal look at the assassination that affected the entire world and changed the United States forever"--

Lyndon B. Johnson and John F. Kennedy were commissioned officers before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. ford sought and receive officer's commissions in 1942. George H.W. Bush entered the Naval Reserve as a seaman, second class, after graduating from high school in 1942 and was commissioned in June 1943 during flight training. During the war, Johnson conducted an inspection tour of MacArthur's newly formed Southwest Pacific command and embarked as an observer on a bombing mission over New Guinea. Kennedy skippered two PT boats in the Solomon Islands, one of which was lost in a collision with a Japanese destroyer. Nixon commanded ground aviation support units in the Solomon Islands. Ford, officer of the deck of the light aircraft carrier USS Monterey, survived an encounter with a deadly typhoon. Bush, flying off the light aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto, parachuted to safety and was rescued at sea when his TBM Avenger fighter bomber was shot down over Chichi Jima in the Bonin Islands. Duane Hove's five years of research and interviews shed new light on this period of our leader's history. His accounts provide detailed description, void of folklore, of the presidents' wartime military service.

Book Description :

NOTE: This book is an unofficial Summary (not the original book) and it is NOT written by Clint Hill. Five Presidents is both cross examinations and independent analyses geared towards discovery of various personalities that had once occupied the most extolled seat of power in the world, the Presidency of the United States. The long peregrinations of these individuals into that seat was partly evaluated while the major light was shone on the implications of their actions and inactions as presidents. The account of events as described by Clint Hill, a Security agent, that served under five different presidents, from General Eisenhower to Gerald Ford was nothing less than a fascinating and a mind-boggling one. The original book has been summarized to save your time while ensuring that the germane and relevant points are presented without exclusion. Eisenhower was a General with impeccable precision; Kennedy was a youthful and energetic leader who espoused peace in all its ramifications; LBJ signed many "life-touching" bills in Acts; Nixon ended the war in Vietnam; and Ford worked assiduously to uphold American legacy. However, they all had their mistakes which many might deem excusable but their flaws were a validation of the fact that humans would never be infallible. I believe this book will be a wonderful reading experience for you and make you understand the stories of memorable American eras in a single short read. Have a lovely trip to the past as you have a happy reading time.

Book Description :

At the European Council of 25/26 June 2015, Commission President Juncker will present a report on the future of EMU. As a preparatory step, an Analytical Note published in February 2015 raised eleven questions on how to enhance economic governance in the euro area. Our Policy paper sets out some guiding principles on the issue. We derive our approach from the principle that we need as much additional integration as necessary for the effective functioning of EMU, but as little as possible. 1. Compliance: conditionality, incentives, and moral hazard The implementation and enforcement of the EMU governance framework needs to rely on an adequate balance between sanctions and incentives. Both need to be strengthened, but emphasis should lie on the incentives. Furthermore, social imbalances need to be taken into account when assessing convergence and imbalances. 2. Structural reforms and real convergence Structural reforms could be encouraged by allowing member states that meet certain convergence requirements to participate in strengthened EMU risk-sharing mechanisms. The aims of reform should not only be limited to improving cost competitiveness, but target broader measures to improve non-cost competitiveness through financial support and technical assistance. 3. Financial markets: bank-sovereign nexus and shock absorption The impact of future crises could be further mitigated by introducing a European deposit insurance, which would limit capital flight from countries under pressure, and adding a fiscal backstop to the Single Resolution Fund (SRF) in order to enhance its credibility. 4. Missing governance instruments The ESM should be replaced by a European Monetary Fund that would feature a streamlined voting system and would provide emergency liquidity on the basis of predefined conditions. Furthermore, in order to prevent the renewed build-up of imbalances, temporary stabilizing payments may be needed to synchronise euro area members' business cycles. 5. Accountability and legitimacy Improvements to EMU's accountability and legitimacy are needed. At the executive level, these include holding regular euro area summit meetings, creating a permanent president of the Eurogroup, and replacing the Troika by a "European team" under direct democratic control. At the parliamentary level, we need a "euro area subcommittee" in the European Parliament and greater involvement of national parliament members in EMU governance. EMU needs to be developed further and the Five Presidents Report has the potential to play a key role in setting the reform agenda. Since there may be several alternative paths to a strengthened monetary union, the message of the Five Presidents Report should lay the foundations for discussing them in a systematic manner. We need a serious debate on EMU's long-term perspective.
