"An absolutely brilliant and singularly indescribable book, Fish Eyes for Pearls is an extraordinary journey into a woman's life. One of the bravest, most unique and compelling self-examinations I have ever read- I was blown away " -Henry Jaglom The phrase 'fish eyes for pearls' is coined in an ancient book of internal alchemy, prompting the question, in this world veiled in illusion, how does one discern the precious from the common or worthless? And then, how might the ordinary be transformed into something extraordinary? Lead on a mission to gather and liberate ghosts, the artist navigates the thorny and humbling landscape of relationships, society, and the unseen realms. With canvas, words and camera lens, she turns life into art and art into a life.

Book Description :

A question often asked of those of us who work in the seemingly esoteric field of fish vision is, why? To some of us the answer seems obvious - how many other visual scientists get to dive in a tropical lagoon in the name of science and then are able to eat their subjects for dinner? However, there are better, or at least scientifically more acceptable, reasons for working on the visual system of fish. First, in terms of numbers, fish are by far the most important of all vertebrate classes, probably accounting for over half (c. 22 000 species) of all recognized vertebrate species (Nelson, 1984). Furthermore, many of these are of commercial importance. Secondly, if one of the research aims is to understand the human visual system, animals such as fish can tell us a great deal, since in many ways their visual systems, and specifically their eyes, are similar to our own. This is fortunate, since there are several techniques, such as intracellular retinal recording, which are vital to our understanding of the visual process, that cannot be performed routinely on primates. The cold blooded fish, on the other hand, is an ideal subject for such studies and much of what we know about, for example, the fundamentals of information processing in the retina is based on work carried out on fish (e. g. Svaetichin, 1953).

Book Description :

Symplectic geometry, well known as the basic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics, is also the foundation of optics. In fact, optical systems (geometric or wave) have an even richer symmetry structure than mechanical ones (classical or quantum). The symmetries underlying the geometric model of light are based on the symplectic group. Geometric Optics on Phase Space develops both geometric optics and group theory from first principles in their Hamiltonian formulation on phase space. This treatise provides the mathematical background and also collects a host of useful methods of practical importance, particularly the fractional Fourier transform currently used for image processing. The reader will appreciate the beautiful similarities between Hamilton's mechanics and this approach to optics. The appendices link the geometry thus introduced to wave optics through Lie methods. The book addresses researchers and graduate students.

Book Description :

Dr. William H. Bates discovered Natural Eyesight Improvement, 'The Bates Method'. His Experiments prove that tension in the outer eye muscles (oblique and Recti) disrupt, change the shape of the eye and focus of light rays in the eye resulting in; unclear close and distant vision, astigmatism, crossed, wandering eyes, cataract, glaucoma and other abnormal eye conditions. He proved that the outer eye muscles, (oblique) when relaxed, contracting, un-contracting normally change the shape of the eye to normal to produce clear close and distant vision. Relaxed ciliary, iris, tear gland and other inner, outer eye muscles also function correct, produce clear vision, healthy eyes. Mental, emotional strain, tension, using the eyes incorrect is the main cause of outer eye muscle, eye tension and unclear vision. Dr. Bates proved that relaxation of the mind, body, outer eye muscles results in a return of the eye to normal shape with correct focus of light rays in the eyes, on the retina with clear vision at all distances, removal of astigmatism and other eye problems, keeps the eyes healthy with normal circulation, eye pressure, correct function of the optic and other eye, visual system nerves. Abnormal pressure, tension, pulling on/in the eye, lens, retina is removed. The eye muscles; outer (oblique, recti & muscles for blinking, tears...) and inner (ciliary, iris... muscles near and attached to the lens) function correct producing perfect; convergence, accommodation for clear close and reading vision, divergence, un-accommodation for clear distant vision. Shifting 'eye movement' with Central-Fixation (central vision) and function of the retina, lens, brain, entire visual system are perfect. A few of Dr. Bates older articles were based on the beliefs of most Ophthalmologists. As Dr. Bates cured his own vision naturally, treated his patients, performed experiments on the eyes, eye muscles, nerves-he changed his view on accommodation and other eye functions. He then practiced, applied natural eye, vision treatments without the use of eyeglasses, surgery, drugs. This is the origin of Natural Eyesight Improvement. Dr. Bates recorded all his natural treatments, work in his Clinic in New York City, U.S.A. and other hospitals, locations during his lifetime in his book 'The Cure Of Imperfect Sight By Treatment Without Glasses' & 11 years, 132 Issues of his Monthly Better Eyesight Magazine. Eyeglasses are often prescribed unnecessarily or 'too strong' (over-corrected) due to temporary nervousness, pressure to hurry, limited, incorrect eye, head, neck, body movement during an eye exam. Eye doctors also prefer to prescribe an 'extra stronger strength' to the eyeglass lenses. All eyeglasses, especially strong eyeglass lenses, bifocals, astigmatism lenses, sunglasses cause fast, increased vision impairment and prescriptions for stronger eyeglass lenses. This leads to increased vision impairment, cataracts and other eye health, vision impairment. Book Description :

This book is about the behaviour of teleosts, a well-defined, highly successful, taxonomic group of vertebrate animals sharing a common body plan and forming the vast majority of living bony fishes. There are weH over 22000 living species of teleosts, including nearly all those of importance in com mercial fisheries and aquaculture. Teleosts are represented injust about every conceivable aquatic environment from temporary desert pools to the deep ocean, from soda lakes to sub-zero Antarctic waters. Behaviour is the primary interface between these effective survival machines and their environment: behavioural plasticity is one of the keys to their success. The study of animal behaviour has undergone revolutionary changes in the past decade under the dual impact of behavioural ecology and sociobiology. The modern body of theory provides quantitatively testable and experi mentaHy accessible hypotheses. Much current work in animal behaviour has concentrated on birds and mammals, animals with ostensibly more complex structure, physiology and behavioural capacity, but there is a growing body of information about the behaviour of fishes. There is now increasing awareness that the same ecological and evolutionary rules govern teleost fish, and that their behaviour is not just a simplified version of that seen in birds and mammals. The details of fish behaviour intimately reflect unique and efficient adaptations to their three-dimensional aquatic environment.

Book Description :

The vertebrate retina has a form that is closely and clearly linked to its func tion. Though its fundamental cellular architecture is conserved across verte brates, the retinas of individual species show variations that are also of clear and direct functional utility. Its accessibility, readily identifiable neuronal types, and specialized neuronal connectivity and morphology have made it a model system for researchers interested in the general questions of the genet ic, molecular, and developmental control of cell type and shape. Thus, the questions asked of the retina span virtually every domain of neuroscientific inquiry-molecular, genetic, developmental, behavioral, and evolutionary. Nowhere have the interactions of these levels of analysis been more apparent and borne more fruit than in the last several years of study of the develop ment of the vertebrate retina. Fields of investigation have a natural evolution, rdoving through periods of initial excitement, of framing of questions and controversy, to periods of synthesis and restatement of questions. The study of the development of the vertebrate retina appeared to us to have reached such a point of synthesis. Descriptive questions of how neurons are generated and deployed, and ques tions of mechanism about the factors that control the retinal neuron's type and distribution and the conformation of its processes have been posed, and in good part answered. Moreover, the integration of cellular accounts of development with genetic, molecular, and whole-eye and behavioral accounts has begun.

Book Description :

The 50 plus black & white and color pictures included in this hardcover sixty-six page monograph were taken with a Nikon Fisheye lens and were made over a period of 42 years. The subjects included a young Ted Kennedy campaigning for a Senate Seat as well as Boston Pops Maestro Arthur Fielder at work and at home. Other images include colorful Trio Indians of the Amazon Basin and Libyan Taurags deep in the Sahara Desert. The photographer's fascination with the images this particular lens produced was the natural extension of a series of pinhole camera experiments he'd done earlier. Both sets of images produced the distinctive round, spherical photographs as well as images with huge depth of field. Unlike pinhole photos, the fisheyes images are much sharper. With a few exceptions, these fisheyes were shot after the photo coverage of the subjects with more standard lenses was complete. Take a visual safari into the world where all the subjects are captured in an extremely wide-angle view that is much more like the human eye sees than the much narrower views the camera usually captures. Enjoy seeing normal, everyday subjects as well as visual icons in a different way than you've ever seen them before. This may be the one and only published photographic book featuring nothing but artistic fisheye pictures. There are images included in this monograph that have not been seen or published anywhere else.
