Summary, Analysis & Review of Jessica Bennett’s Feminist Fight Club by Instaread Preview: Feminist Fight Club by Jessica Bennett is a guide for women to counteract behaviors and trends in the workplace that disproportionately damage their ability to succeed. Bennett’s outlook on feminism was shaped early in her career by regular meetings with other women to discuss obstacles and share their successes in what they called a “feminist fight club.” Women often encounter people whose actions directly hurt their workplace performance. This includes co-workers, often men, who appropriate their successes, interrupt them in meetings, or disproportionately assign them uncompensated, menial, and administrative tasks. Adequate responses to these behaviors avoid direct confrontation but emphasize that the woman’s treatment has been unfair or based on gender stereotypes. Women can sabotage their own success by defaulting to the stereotypical behavior that others expect. Instead of volunteering to do unpaid administrative work on top of everything else, deflecting credit for their own success to the team, or… PLEASE NOTE: This is a Summary, Analysis & Review of the book and NOT the original book. Book Description :

From the NPR host of The Indicator and correspondent for Planet Money comes an “accessible, funny, clear-eyed, and practical” (Sarah Knight, New York Times bestselling author) guide for how women can apply the principles of 16th-century philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli to their work lives and finally shatter the glass ceiling—perfect for fans of Feminist Fight Club, Lean In, and Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office. Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining. So why, in the age of #MeToo and #TimesUp, is the glass ceiling still holding strong? And how can we shatter it for once and for all? Stacy Vanek Smith’s advice: ask Machiavelli “with this delicious look at what we have to gain by examining our relationship to power” (Sally Helgesen, New York Times bestselling author). Using The Prince as a guide and with charm and wit, Smith applies Renaissance politics to the 21st century, and demonstrates how women can take and maintain power in careers where they have long been cast as second-best. “Machiavelli For Women is the ultimate battle guide for our times. Brimming with hard-boiled strategies, laced with wit, it’s a must read for every woman ready to wield power unapologetically” (Claire Shipman, coauthor of The Confidence Code).

Book Description :

The Devil Wears Prada and Feminist Fight Club meet in the Paris finance world in Paris Jungle, a novel of a mistreated woman who decides it's time to stand up and say #MeToo. Wanda Julienne is living the dream in Paris. Until the sexual harassment starts... Wanda has it all - the perfect job, a passionate romance, and a lust for life. But when she returns to work from maternity leave, her world is turned upside down. Suddenly, everything she does is wrong, at least in the eyes of her bully of a boss. She's blamed for things she didn't do and is set up to take a very big fall. Add in a dose of unwanted sexual advances, and Wanda, who can't afford to lose her job, is trapped watching her dream life crumble around her. To make matters worse, the problems at work spill over to her personal life as she pushes away her lover and her friends, and barely has time for her newborn baby. Can Wanda survive the cut-throat world of finance and reconnect with the ones she loves to find her happy ever after in Paris? "An insider's look inside the messy world of high finance-a kind of Devil Wears Prada for international investment firms-Paris Jungle also delivers a poignant modern love story set in Paris. What's not to love?" - Award-winning author Amy Impellizzeri This novel can be read as a standalone or as part of the From Paris to Provence series. Each book in the series brings to life its own unique characters yet all books share the vibrant and captivating setting of France. Previously published as The Creepshow. Interview with the Author What was your inspiration to write Paris Jungle? I was inspired by the current situation women face in the workplace. I feel that I've experienced discrimination in the past, and most women I've spoken with say they've also experienced it at some point or another in their careers. In so many fields and on so many levels, women fight to earn the same salaries and opportunities as male counterparts. And the situation becomes particularly complicated for many women once they have children. It sounds almost like a true story But it's fictional, right? Now that's a compliment I strive to make my characters and their situations believable. This is indeed a work of fiction, but the protagonist, Wanda, is going through something many women today face, which makes the book seem pretty realistic, especially in light of the #MeToo movement. One of my favorite nonfiction books about women in the workplace and in leadership roles is Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook. Some of the themes are heavy. Can you describe some of the lighter aspects of the book as well? Wanda rekindles a romance with her ex-boyfriend, who also is the father of her baby. Throughout the book she struggles with the usual concerns of someone in a new relationship. There is also a strong theme of friendship as Wanda seeks comfort with her best friend. What do you hope readers will take away from this novel? I hope they will take away strength to fight when faced with any sort of injustice, and hope, always hope. So this book is part of a series? Yes and no. Each novel in the From Paris to Provence series brings to life its own unique characters and can be read as a standalone, but all books share the vibrant and captivating setting of France: - A Perfumer's Secret - Paris, Rue des Martyrs - Paris Jungle If you like reading about strong female protagonists who do all they can to fight unfair working circumstances, you'll enjoy this novel. Thanks for reading

Wanda Julienne was the perfect employee. Until she had a baby. Wanda, a thirtysomething single mother, would love to spend more time with her newborn daughter, and maybe even rekindle the flame she once had with her baby's father. Instead, she's stuck fighting discrimination and harassment at her horrid job. After maternity leave, Wanda returns to her fund manager position and finds her world turned upside down. Suddenly, everything she does seems wrong-at least in the eyes of management. Add in a dose of sexual harassment, and Wanda, who can't afford to lose her job, is trapped. At home, the situation isn't much brighter. Wanda struggles to balance her baby's needs and her tough work schedule. Her best friend, Galina, and the ex-boyfriend Wanda never thought would return, Max, offer support, but the attention only suffocates her. Wanda turns her back and isolates herself, submerged in a downward spiral, until Galina suggests a way out-but the exit won't be without drastic consequences. A novel of the glass ceiling: one working mother's story of fighting workplace bullying and sexism so that she finally has time for her baby-and a chance at love. Fans of Biglaw by Lindsay Cameron and Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg will enjoy the empowerment and triumph in this novel. Interview with the Author What was your inspiration to write The Creepshow? Book Description :

Fight Club is, on one level, pop-culture phenomena and on another, a deeply philosophical and satirical exploration of modern life. David Fincher’s 1999 film (and Chuck Palahniuk’s source novel) has had a huge impact on audiences worldwide leading to spoofs, homage, merchandising and numerous Internet fan sites. On initial release the film was met with wide hostility from critics who either failed to appreciate its satirical intent or believed the film failed to deliver on its satirical promise. Early in its DVD afterlife, however, a wider audience began to appreciate the film’s significance and radical message. Although attracted by the film’s playfulness and star wattage, however, many students struggle with its theoretical notions such as Capitalism, materialism, anarchy and so on. This is one film, which therefore merits a thoughtful and provocative analysis but also an accessible one, and Mark Ramey has provided just that.

Book Description :

The world of business books is a curious place where one can find everyone from great businesspeople like Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, to the most spectacular business failures such as Enron and the sub-prime business market. There are geniuses, hard workers, academics and entrepreneurs as well a few charlatans and hucksters. There's even room for Donald Trump. The 70 titles covered were chosen with various parameters in mind: to cover a range of areas of business, from sales and marketing to negotiation, entrepreneurship to investing, leadership to innovation, and from traditional and corporate models of business to start-up manuals and alternative angles on the subject. Obvious bestselling titles such as How to Make Friends and Influence People or 7 Habits of Highly Effective People have been included, but there are also those books of more questionable value often included on recommended lists of business classics, included here by way of warning. The chosen books also cover a wide span of time and acknowledge that some of the most powerful or entertaining insights into business can be found in texts that aren't perceived as being 'business books', for instance The Art of War, Microserfs, Thinking Fast and Slow and The Wealth of Nations. The selection includes a good range of the most recent successes in business publishing with which readers may be less familiar. The titles are arranged chronologically, allowing the reader to dip in, but also casting an intriguing light on how trends in business titles have changed over the years. Among these titles, you will find expert advice, based on solid research (for instance The Effective Executive or Getting to Yes), and inspirational guides to setting up businesses and running them on sound foundations (such as True North, Crucial Conversations, or We) alongside dubious management manuals that take a single flawed idea and stretch it out to the point of absurdity. The hope is that the reader will be inspired to read the best of these titles, ignore the worst of them, and will come away with at least a basic idea of what each has to teach us about business.
