Book Description :

Many people, professionals and non-professionals alike, recognize that it is of critical importance to solve global energy and environmental issues. For this purpose, it is essential to have a scientific understanding of what is meant by the “energy” issue is and the “environmental” issue. The concept of “exergy” is a scientific concept that exactly fits. The concept of ‘energy’ is a scientifically-well established concept, namely ‘to be conserved’. Then the question is what is really consumed. Exergy: Theory and Applications in the Built Environment is dedicated to answer this fundamental question by discussing the theory of “exergy” and by demonstrating its use extensively to describe a variety of systems in particular for built-environmental conditioning. Our immediate environmental space works within the flow of energy and matter in an “exergy-entropy” process, and the built environment can be designed with these energy & environmental issues in mind. Exergy: Theory and Applications in the Built Environment introduces readers who are not familiar with thermodynamics to the concept of exergy with a variety of discussion on the built-environmental space such as heating, cooling, lighting, and others. Readers, including students, researchers, planners, architects and engineers, will obtain a better picture of a sustainable built-environment.

Book Description :

A companion book to the textbook The Exergy Method of Thermal Plant Analysis. This Companion Book presents model solutions to the questions taken from Appendix G of the main textbook. Since the Exergy Method is a relatively new area of Applied Thermodynamics it was thought that the presentation of model solutions of problems of various types would be of some help both to teachers and to self-teaching students. The advantages of the use of exergy analysis were demonstrated by pointing out and quantifying thermodynamic losses of various plant components and plant configurations. These were discussed at the end of the solutions under Comments. It is hoped that this will give students a deeper understanding of the nature of irreversibilities of various kinds and their effect on plant performance. Dr Tadeusz J. Kotas joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Queen Mary College as a member of teaching staff in 1957. His main areas of interest were Mechanics of Fluids and Applied Thermodynamics, obtaining a PhD degree for his work in the former subject. His work in the latter subject focused on the Exergy Method, contributing to its development through his research and publications and to its dissemination through courses which he ran in Britain and in a number of European countries for practicing engineers and academics.

Book Description :

This book is a beginners introduction to chemical thermodynamics for engineers. In the textbook efforts have been made to visualize as clearly as possible the main concepts of thermodynamic quantities such as enthalpy and entropy, thus making them more perceivable. Furthermore, intricate formulae in thermodynamics have been discussed as functionally unified sets of formulae to understand their meaning rather than to mathematically derive them in detail. In this textbook, the affinity of irreversible processes, defined by the second law of thermodynamics, has been treated as the main subject, rather than the equilibrium of chemical reactions. The concept of affinity is applicable in general not only to the processes of chemical reactions but also to all kinds of irreversible processes. This textbook also includes electrochemical thermodynamics in which, instead of the classical phenomenological approach, molecular science provides an advanced understanding of the reactions of charged particles such as ions and electrons at the electrodes. Recently, engineering thermodynamics has introduced a new thermodynamic potential called exergy, which essentially is related to the concept of the affinity of irreversible processes. This textbook discusses the relation between exergy and affinity and explains the exergy balance diagram and exergy vector diagram applicable to exergy analyses in chemical manufacturing processes. This textbook is written in the hope that the readers understand in a broad way the fundamental concepts of energy and exergy from chemical thermodynamics in practical applications. Finishing this book, the readers may easily step forward further into an advanced text of their specified line. - Visualizes the main concepts of thermodynamics to show the meaning of the quantities and formulae. - Focuses mainly on the affinity of irreversible processes and the related concept of exergy. - Provides an advanced understanding of electrochemical thermodynamics.

Book Description :

Exergy is the measurement of the amount of work capacity i.e. the amount of energy that can do work. The author applies this concept to ecology, where it can be used as an ecological indicator for ecosystem health assessment and this is presented in the book with illustrative examples. In addition, the question of how it is possible to define a special ecological exergy concept to calculate the exergy for models of ecosystems is covered. The use of exergy and an introduced fourth law of thermodynamics make it possible to understand the ecosystem reactions and how the ecosystem can grow in three different forms - biomass, complexity of network and information. From this analysis, it is clear why ecosystems are sustainable systems and what characteristic properties ecosystems have to ensure that sustainability. A parallel from ecosystems to society makes it possible to formulate the same rules (laws) for society. The concept of exergy as a health indicator measuring the degree of sustainability of society can also be used. Examples will be applied to illustrate the application of exergy and the deduced ecological rules (laws) for understanding the society.

Book Description :

Bridging the gap between concepts derived from Second Law of Thermodynamics and their application to Engineering practice, the property exergy and the exergy balance can be a tool for analyzing and improving the performance of energy conversion processes. With the exergy analysis it is possible to evaluate the performance of energy conversion processes not only on a thermodynamics basis but also by including production costs and environmental aspects and impacts of the studied processes. This comprehensive approach of the use of energy has, as one of the most important feature, the identification of sustainable ways of energy resources utilization. Based on the fundamentals of the exergy concept, its calculation, graphical representations and exergy balances evaluation, Exergy: Production Cost And Renewability describes the application of detailed exergy and thermoeconomic analysis to power plants and polygeneration systems, petroleum production and refining plants (including hydrogen production), chemical plants, biofuel production routes, combined production of ethanol and electricity, aircraft systems design, environmental impact mitigation processes and human body behavior. The presented case studies aim at providing students, researchers and engineers with guidelines to the utilization of the exergy and thermoeconomic analysis to model, simulate and optimize real processes and industrial plants.

Book Description :

The exergy method makes it possible to detect and quantify the possibilities of improving thermal and chemical processes and systems. The introduction of the concept thermo-ecological cost (cumulative consumption of non-renewable natural exergy resources) generated large application possibilities of exergy in ecology. This book contains a short presentation on the basic principles of exergy analysis and discusses new achievements in the field over the last 15 years. One of the most important issues considered by the distinguished author is the economy of non-renewable natural exergy. Previously discussed only in scientific journals, other important new problems highlighted include: calculation of the chemical exergy of all the stable chemical elements, global natural and anthropogenic exergy losses, practical guidelines for improvement of the thermodynamic imperfection of thermal processes and systems, development of the determination methods of partial exergy losses in thermal systems, evaluation of the natural mineral capital of the Earth, and the application of exergy for the determination of a pro-ecological tax.A basic knowledge of thermodynamics is assumed, and the book is therefore most appropriate for graduate students and engineers working in the field of energy and ecological management.

The case study has been optimized with respect to the overall exergy efficiency by means of a parameter study. Abstract: Exergy analysis is a powerful thermodynamic technique for assessing and optimizing the efficiency of energy systems. In this research, a Modelica®-based tool to perform a fully-dynamic exergy analysis has been developed. Another scope of this study is to develop a component that automatically generates a "Hydraulic network" in the Modelica® modelling language to be used as a case study for performing a dynamic exergy analysis. Using this component, a model of a district in Bottrop, Germany and its energy system has been developed. The exergy analysis tool has been implemented in this district model and the system has been dynamically analysed from an exergy point of view. Additionally, the "simple water model" of the Modelica® Standard Library has been improved in the course of this research to meet the requirements of an exergy analysis. Influence of key parameters variation has been investigated and the system has been optimized with respect to the overall exergy efficiency by means of a parameter study. Using this approach, an improvement of the overall exergy efficiency of 5 percentage points has been achieved.

Book Description :

Quantifying exergy losses in the energy supply system of buildings reveals the potential for energy improvement, which cannot be discovered using conventional energy analysis. Thermoeconomics combines economic and thermodynamic analysis by applying the concept of cost (an economic concept) to exergy, as exergy is a thermodynamic property fit for this purpose, in that it combines the quantity of energy with its quality factor. Exergy Analysis and Thermoeconomics of Buildings applies exergy analysis methods and thermoeconomics to the built environment. The mechanisms of heat transfer throughout the envelope of buildings are analyzed from an exergy perspective and then to the building thermal installations, analyzing the different components, such as condensing boilers, absorption refrigerators, microcogeneration plants, etc., including solar installations and finally the thermal facilities as a whole. A detailed analysis of the cost formation process is presented, which has its physical roots firmly planted in the second law of thermodynamics. The basic principles and the rules of cost allocation, in energy units (exergy cost), in monetary units (exergoeconomic cost), and in CO2 emissions (exergoenvironmental cost), based on the so-called Exergy Cost Theory are presented and applied to thermal installations of buildings. Clear and rigorous in its exposition, Exergy Analysis and Thermoeconomics of Buildings discusses exergy analysis and thermoeconomics and the role they could play in the analysis and design of building components, either the envelope or the thermal facilities, as well as the diagnosis of thermal installations. This book moves progressively from introducing the basic concepts to applying them. Exergy Analysis and Thermoeconomics of Buildings provides examples of specific cases throughout this book. These cases include real data, so that the results obtained are useful to interpret the inefficiencies and losses that truly occur in actual installations; hence, the assessment of their effects encourages the manner to improve efficiency. Applies exergy analysis methods for the installation of building thermal facilities equipment components, including pipes, valves, heat exchangers, boilers and heat pumps Helps readers determine the operational costs of heating and cooling building systems Includes exergy analysis methods that are devoted to absorption refrigerators, adsorption cooling systems, basic air conditioning processes, ventilation systems and solar systems, either thermal and PV Discusses the direct application of exergy analysis concepts, including examples of buildings with typical heating, DHW and air conditioning installations

Technical Report from the year 2017 in the subject Physics - Other, , language: English, abstract: The objective of this applied industrial research was to conduct an exergy-based analysis for an Open Cycle Gas Turbine in Abu Dhabi in order to evaluate its performance under design conditions and during summer weather conditions. The first explanation for this investigation is that CO2 emissions from power generation plants in the United Arab Emirates are responsible for about 33% of the 200 million tons of the total CO2 emitted in 2013 in the country. The second reason for this industrial project is that the standard conditions used for the design of gas turbines are 288K, sea level atmospheric pressure and 60% relative humidity. However, the average summer weather conditions in Abu Dhabi are T=316K and a relative humidity of 50%. As a consequence, the effects of summer weather conditions on different performance indices of the power plant were also studied.

Book Description :

Energy and Exergy analysis are one of alternative techniques to analyze chemical processes in term of energy quality parameters such as enthalpy, entropy and exergetic temperature. The exergetic temperature can conduct Exergy Composite Curves diagram (ECCs) (Marmolejo-Correa, 2012) which represents exergy targets: exergy requirement, exergy rejection and exergy destruction etc. In addition, these targets can be used for improving processes. The strength points of these analysis are to design the new process and to improve the utility performance. Therefore, these analysis methods have been applied to low-temperature process that requires a large amount of energy consumption. In this work, there are two approaches of energy minimization. First model, a combination with ECCs diagram and mathematical programing (Wechsung, 2011) can synthesize a better design of process to reduce utility usage. Second model, a synthesis of cascade refrigeration systems (Colmenares, 1989) can indicate a configuration of refrigeration systems with alternative working fluids for minimizing the energy used by condenser and compressor. Besides that, these models were applied to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production as a case study which comes from the Pro/II’s tutorial (commercial engineering software). The results show that the Exergy and Energy analysis have an ability and potential to design new synthesis for cooling systems for sub-ambient processes and a combination of heat exchanger with compression and expansion processes.

Highlights: Energy and exergy analysis was performed on double effect series flow absorption refrigeration system. The refrigeration system runs on various heat sources such as hot water, hot air and steam. A comparative analysis was carried out on these heat sources in terms of exergy destruction and mass flow rate of heat source. The effect of heat sources on the exergy destruction of high pressure generator was investigated. Abstract: Absorption refrigeration systems are environmental friendly since they can utilize industrial waste heat and/or solar energy. In terms of heat source of the systems, researchers prefer one type heat source usually such as hot water or steam. Some studies can be free from environment. In this study, energy and exergy analysis is performed on a double effect series flow absorption refrigeration system with water/lithium bromide as working fluid pair. The refrigeration system runs on various heat sources such as hot water, hot air and steam via High Pressure Generator (HPG) because of hot water/steam and hot air are the most common available heat source for absorption applications but the first law of thermodynamics may not be sufficient analyze the absorption refrigeration system and to show the difference of utilize for different type heat source. On the other hand operation temperatures of the overall system and its components have a major effect on their performance and functionality. In this regard, a parametric study conducted here to investigate this effect on heat capacity and exergy destruction of the HPG, coefficient of performance (COP) of the system, and mass flow rate of heat sources. Also, a comparative analysis is carried out on several heat sources (e.g. hot water, hot air and steam) in terms of exergy destruction and mass flow rate of heat source. From the analyses it is observed that exergy destruction of the HPG increases at higher temperature of the heat sources, condenser and absorber, and lower temperature of the HPG, LPG and evaporator. This destruction is maximized when hot air heat source is used and minimized with utilizing hot water heat source.
