In recent years, there have been considerable developments in techniques for the investigation and utilisation of enzymes. With the assistance of a co-author, this popular student textbook has been updated to include techniques such as membrane chromatography, aqueous phase partitioning, engineering recombinant proteins for purification and due to the rapid advances in bioinformatics/proteomics, a discussion of the analysis of complex protein mixtures by 2D-electrophoresis and RPHPLC prior to sequencing by mass spectroscopy. Written with the student firmly in mind, no previous knowledge of biochemistry, and little of chemistry, is assumed. It is intended to provide an introduction to enzymology, and a balanced account of all the various theoretical and applied aspects of the subject which are likely to be included in a course. Book Description :

Xylanolytic Enzymes describes the enzyme structure and its interaction with plant cell walls, the properties and production of different enzymes and their application, and the knowledge gathered on the hydrolysis mechanism of hemicellulose. The knowledge gathered about the hydrolysis mechanism of the hemicelluloses, especially xylans, has greatly promoted the rapid application of these enzymes in new areas. Recently there has been much industrial interest in xylan and its hydrolytic enzymatic complex, as a supplement and for the manufacturing of food, drinks, textiles, pulps and paper, and ethanol; and in xylitol production as a fermentation substrate for the production of enzymes. This book describes xylan as a major component of plant hemicelluloses. Presents a thorough overview of all aspects of xylanolytic enzymes Gives up-to-date authoritative information and cites pertinent research Includes studies on xylanase regulation and synergistic action between multiple forms of xylanase

Book Description :

Handbook of Proteolytic Enzymes, Second Edition, Volume 1: Aspartic and Metallo Peptidases is a compilation of numerous progressive research studies on proteolytic enzymes. This edition is organized into two main sections encompassing 328 chapters. This handbook is organized around a system for the classification of peptidases, which is a hierarchical one built on the concepts of catalytic type, clan, family and peptidase. The concept of catalytic type of a peptidase depends upon the chemical nature of the groups responsible for catalysis. The recognized catalytic types are aspartic, cysteine, metallo, serine, threonine, and the unclassified enzymes, while clans and families are groups of homologous peptidases. Homology at the level of a family of peptidases is shown by statistically significant relationship in amino acid sequence to a representative member called the type example, or to another member of the family that has already been shown to be related to the type example. Each chapter discusses the history, activity, specificity, structural chemistry, preparation, and biological aspects of the enzyme. This book will prove useful to enzyme chemists and researchers.

Book Description :

A contemporary history of Guatemala's thirty-year civil war--the longest and bloodiest in the hemisphere--this book pulls aside the veil of secrecy that has obscured the origins of the war. Using a structural analysis that takes critical events and changes in the nation's economic and social structure as a starting point for understanding its political crises, the author unravels the contradictions of Guatemalan politics and illustrates why, in the face of unmatched military brutality and repeated U.S. interventions, popular and revolutionary movements have arisen time and again. The central protagonists in the turbulent battle for Guatemala--rebels, death squads, and the United States--are evaluated in a dynamic framework that highlights the role of indigenous peoples and women and underscores the articulation of ethnic and gender divisions with class divisions. This book's interdisciplinary approach differentiates it from others in English and makes it an invaluable case study on the internal dynamics of Third World revolution and counterrevolution as well as on issues of human rights and U.S. policy in Central America.

Book Description :

The secretions of the exocrine pancreas provide for digestion of a meal into components that are then available for processing and absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Without the exocrine pancreas, malabsorption and malnutrition result. This chapter describes the cellular participants responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluid that in combination provide a pancreatic secretion that accomplishes the digestive functions of the gland. Key cellular participants, the acinar cell and the duct cell, are responsible for digestive enzyme and fluid secretion, respectively, of the exocrine pancreas. This chapter describes the neurohumoral pathways that mediate the pancreatic response to a meal as well as details of the cellular mechanisms that are necessary for the organ responses, including protein synthesis and transport and ion transports, and the regulation of these responses by intracellular signaling systems. Examples of pancreatic diseases resulting from dysfunction in cellular mechanisms provide emphasis of the importance of the normal physiologic mechanisms.

Book Description :

Many hundreds of toxins have been purified and characterized from the complex mixtures of pharmacologically active proteins and polypeptides within snake venoms. The study of these toxins has contributed significantly to our understanding of snake venom toxicity and, perhaps more importantly, has provided numerous research tools which have helped decipher the intricate details of various physiological processes at the molecular level and which have also been used in the development of pharmaceutical agents. Among these toxins, phospholipase A2 enzymes (PLA2 enzymes) are the most fascinating group of proteins and Venom Phospholipase A2 Enzymes is the first comprehensive book covering both fundamental and recent advances in phospholipase research. Particular emphasis is placed on the pharmacological effects of snake venom PLA2 enzymes. All structural aspects are covered, including known protein sequences, 3D structures and their relationship to catalytic properties. Valuable information is included on the molecular, biological and immunological aspects of these enzymes, their catalytic mechanisms, identification and purification, and several chapters are devoted to recent studies of the neurotoxic, myotoxic, anticoagulant and antiplatelet nature of PLA2 enzymes. The characterization of receptor/acceptor membrane proteins is also discussed in detail. In summary, Venom Phospholipase A2 Enzymes provides a ready reference on all aspects of phospholipase research for toxicologists, pharmacologists, protein chemists, enzymologists and molecular biologists; indeed all researchers working with natural toxins/snake venom will find much of interest within this book.
