Book Description :

There’s a crisis of trust in politics across the western world. Public anger is rising and faith in conventional political leaders and parties is falling. Anti-politics, and the anti-politicians, have arrived. In Enough Said, President and CEO of The New York Times Company Mark Thompson argues that one of the most significant causes of the crisis is the way our public language has changed. Enough Said tells the story of how we got from the language of FDR and Churchill to that of Donald Trump. It forensically examines the public language we’ve been left with: compressed, immediate, sometimes brilliantly impactful, but robbed of most of its explanatory power. It studies the rhetoric of western leaders from Reagan and Thatcher to Berlesconi, Blair, and today’s political elites on both sides of the Atlantic. And it charts how a changing public language has interacted with real world events – Iraq, the financial crash, the UK's surprising Brexit from the EU, immigration – and led to a mutual breakdown of trust between politicians and journalists, to leave ordinary citizens suspicious, bitter, and increasingly unwilling to believe anybody. Drawing from classical as well as contemporary examples and ranging across politics, business, science, technology, and the arts, Enough Said is a smart and shrewd look at the erosion of language by an author uniquely placed to measure its consequences.

Musicality in Theatre

Musicality in Theatre Book

Book Description :

As the complicated relationship between music and theatre has evolved and changed in the modern and postmodern periods, music has continued to be immensely influential in key developments of theatrical practices. In this study of musicality in the theatre, David Roesner offers a revised view of the nature of the relationship. The new perspective results from two shifts in focus: on the one hand, Roesner concentrates in particular on theatre-making - that is the creation processes of theatre - and on the other, he traces a notion of ‘musicality’ in the historical and contemporary discourses as driver of theatrical innovation and aesthetic dispositif, focusing on musical qualities, metaphors and principles derived from a wide range of genres. Roesner looks in particular at the ways in which those who attempted to experiment with, advance or even revolutionize theatre often sought to use and integrate a sense of musicality in training and directing processes and in performances. His study reveals both the continuous changes in the understanding of music as model, method and metaphor for the theatre and how different notions of music had a vital impact on theatrical innovation in the past 150 years. Musicality thus becomes a complementary concept to theatricality, helping to highlight what is germane to an art form as well as to explain its traction in other art forms and areas of life. The theoretical scope of the book is developed from a wide range of case studies, some of which are re-readings of the classics of theatre history (Appia, Meyerhold, Artaud, Beckett), while others introduce or rediscover less-discussed practitioners such as Joe Chaikin, Thomas Bernhard, Elfriede Jelinek, Michael Thalheimer and Karin Beier.

Book Description :

Anna, a German mill-owner’s daughter, marries a French aristocrat and moves to France. She discovers that her husband killed his previous wife and that he is trying to kill her as well. Quick, intriguing, and with an extremely interesting plot, ‘The Grey Woman’ (1861) is a short story by Elizabeth Gaskell for anyone who enjoys a good gothic shudder. Incredibly progressive for its time, it is about the survival of the ill-treated woman who has decided that enough is enough. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist, short story writer, and biographer, best known for her novels ‘North and South’ and ‘Wives and Daughters’ as well as her biography of Charlotte Brontë. Gaskell was viewed as a minor author until the 1950s where it became evident that her depiction of industrial environments and social problems was brilliant and poignant.

The Invisible Man inspired The Map of Chaos by New York Times bestselling author Félix J. Palma. As a gift to readers, this ebook edition includes an excerpt from The Map of Chaos. The Invisible Man is the most famous novel by the famous English writer H.G. Wells. It describes the fate of the scientist-physicist Griffin, who invented a machine that makes a person invisible. But for all the sensationalism of the discovery it concealed in itself a lot of pretty uncomfortable situations. In such situations the main hero of the novel always finds himself. The tragic story of a talented scientist who imagines himself a "superman" is distinguished by a tense, almost detective storyline and strikes a combination of psychological and everyday authenticity with the fantasy of the events taking place. The Invisible Man by H G WELLS : The Invisible Man Annotated The Invisible Man is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. “In the night, he must have eaten and slept; for in the morning he was himself again, active, powerful, angry and malignant, prepared for his last great struggle against the world.” Griffin, an ingenious research scientist, develops a process that can render physical objects invisible. Having successfully performed it on himself, he soon realises that it is impossible to survive like this. and now this invisible man is desperate to reverse the process. Will Griffin be able to become visible again? Or Will his obsession for invisibility result in his doom? An outstanding work of science fiction, H. G. Wells’ the Invisible Man brings forth the destructive effects science can have on humanity. This masterpiece has been adapted into numerous films, TV series, stage plays and radio dramas. The Invisible Man by H G WELLS : The Invisible Man Annotated The Invisible Man is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells. ‘Wells is the Prospero of All the Brave New Worlds of the Mind and the Shakespeare of Science Fiction.’ – Brian Aldiss. Originally serialized in Pearson's Weekly in 1897, it was published as a novel the same year. The Invisible Man the title refers to is Griffin, a scientist who has devoted himself to research into optics and invents a way to change a body's refractive index to that of air so that it neither absorbs nor reflects light and thus becomes invisible. He successfully carries out this procedure on himself, but fails in his attempt to reverse it. An enthusiast of random and irresponsible violence, Griffin has become an iconic character in horror fiction. "You are Enough"...Said Me is written by Divya Adu. This is Adu's first book. She has been performing at coffee houses and poetry slams since middle school. Although, she has been writing since the age of 5. But creating a body of work and compiling it together into an art form, she has never done before. This is a book about trauma, a journey from childhood to adulthood, and a catharsis for anyone who has felt as if they haven't been abundant in life or adequate enough to be in certain spaces. This collection of short stories, poems, and journal entries were carefully written with the deepest emotions and a variety of life situations that a young person might go through. Such as love, emotions, heartache, and triumph. Along with pain, Divya explores healing and finally letting go of childhood fears and mental suffering that life can bring. Learning that you are enough and that you are important through her lens, "HERstory". Some of the works within the book have been selected from an archive that ranges from 2013 to 2019. Divya hopes that this book will allow others to see they are not alone. That your presence and time on earth are valued and your feelings are valid.
