Book Description :

Nowadays, the prevalence of computing systems in our lives is so ubiquitous that we live in a cyber-physical world dominated by computer systems, from pacemakers to cars and airplanes. These systems demand for more computational performance to process large amounts of data from multiple data sources with guaranteed processing times. Actuating outside of the required timing bounds may cause the failure of the system, being vital for systems like planes, cars, business monitoring, e-trading, etc. High-Performance and Time-Predictable Embedded Computing presents recent advances in software architecture and tools to support such complex systems, enabling the design of embedded computing devices which are able to deliver high-performance whilst guaranteeing the application required timing bounds. Technical topics discussed in the book include: Parallel embedded platformsProgramming modelsMapping and scheduling of parallel computationsTiming and schedulability analysisRuntimes and operating systems The work reflected in this book was done in the scope of the European project P‑SOCRATES, funded under the FP7 framework program of the European Commission. High-performance and time-predictable embedded computing is ideal for personnel in computer/communication/embedded industries as well as academic staff and master/research students in computer science, embedded systems, cyber-physical systems and internet-of-things.

As Chairmen of HiPEAC 2005, we have the pleasure of welcoming you to the proceedings of the ?rst international conference promoted by the HiPEAC N- work of Excellence. During the last year, HiPEAC has been building its clusters of researchers in computer architecture and advanced compiler techniques for embedded and high-performance computers. Recently, the Summer School has been the seed for a fruitful collaboration of renowned international faculty and young researchers from 23 countries with fresh new ideas. Now, the conference promises to be among the premier forums for discussion and debate on these research topics. Theprestigeofasymposiumismainlydeterminedbythequalityofitstech- cal program. This ?rst programlived up to our high expectations, thanks to the largenumber of strong submissions. The ProgramCommittee received a total of 84 submissions; only 17 were selected for presentation as full-length papers and another one as an invited paper. Each paper was rigorously reviewed by three ProgramCommittee members and at least one external referee. Many reviewers spent a great amount of e?ort to provide detailed feedback. In many cases, such feedback along with constructive shepherding resulted in dramatic improvement in the quality of accepted papers. The names of the Program Committee m- bers and the referees are listed in the proceedings. The net result of this team e?ort is that the symposium proceedings include outstanding contributions by authors from nine countries in three continents. In addition to paper presentations, this ?rst HiPEAC conference featured two keynotes delivered by prominent researchers from industry and academia.

Book Description :

Over the past several decades, applications permeated by advances in digital signal processing have undergone unprecedented growth in capabilities. The editors and authors of High Performance Embedded Computing Handbook: A Systems Perspective have been significant contributors to this field, and the principles and techniques presented in the handbook are reinforced by examples drawn from their work. The chapters cover system components found in today’s HPEC systems by addressing design trade-offs, implementation options, and techniques of the trade, then solidifying the concepts with specific HPEC system examples. This approach provides a more valuable learning tool, Because readers learn about these subject areas through factual implementation cases drawn from the contributing authors’ own experiences. Discussions include: Key subsystems and components Computational characteristics of high performance embedded algorithms and applications Front-end real-time processor technologies such as analog-to-digital conversion, application-specific integrated circuits, field programmable gate arrays, and intellectual property–based design Programmable HPEC systems technology, including interconnection fabrics, parallel and distributed processing, performance metrics and software architecture, and automatic code parallelization and optimization Examples of complex HPEC systems representative of actual prototype developments Application examples, including radar, communications, electro-optical, and sonar applications The handbook is organized around a canonical framework that helps readers navigate through the chapters, and it concludes with a discussion of future trends in HPEC systems. The material is covered at a level suitable for practicing engineers and HPEC computational practitioners and is easily adaptable to their own implementation requirements.

Book Description :

The main objective of this thesis is to propose new methods for designing high-performance embedded computer system architectures. To achieve the goal, three major components - multi-core processing elements (PEs), DRAM main memory systems, and on/off-chip interconnection networks - in multi-processor embedded systems are examined in each section respectively. : The first section of this thesis presents architectural enhancements to graphics processing units (GPUs), one of the multi- or many-core PEs, for improving performance of embedded applications. An embedded application is first mapped onto GPUs to explore the design space, and then architectural enhancements to existing GPUs are proposed for improving throughput of the embedded application.

Book Description :

Rugged Embedded Systems: Computing in Harsh Environments describes how to design reliable embedded systems for harsh environments, including architectural approaches, cross-stack hardware/software techniques, and emerging challenges and opportunities. A "harsh environment" presents inherent characteristics, such as extreme temperature and radiation levels, very low power and energy budgets, strict fault tolerance and security constraints, etc. that challenge the computer system in its design and operation. To guarantee proper execution (correct, safe, and low-power) in such scenarios, this contributed work discusses multiple layers that involve firmware, operating systems, and applications, as well as power management units and communication interfaces. This book also incorporates use cases in the domains of unmanned vehicles (advanced cars and micro aerial robots) and space exploration as examples of computing designs for harsh environments. Provides a deep understanding of embedded systems for harsh environments by experts involved in state-of-the-art autonomous vehicle-related projects Covers the most important challenges (fault tolerance, power efficiency, and cost effectiveness) faced when developing rugged embedded systems Includes case studies exploring embedded computing for autonomous vehicle systems (advanced cars and micro aerial robots) and space exploration

Book Description :

Over the last decade, the performance capabilities of FPGAs have increased exponentially. Leading vendors such as Xilinx and Altera have improved the functionality of their reconfigurable devices through the inclusion of memory, processors, multi-gigabit transceivers, and multipliers to the basic FPGA architecture. The result is a flexible, high performance processing device able to perform low latency, parallel processing tasks with low power consumption. In order to exploit the obvious benefits of FPGA technology in embedded systems, Nallatech has developed a range of FPGA-centric COTS products based upon the company's modular DIME-II architecture capable of TeraOPS performance. Customers using Nallatech products such as the BenNUEY-PC104+ are able to harness the full capability of advanced Virtex-II and Virtex-II Pro Xilinx FPGAs. With a range of motherboard form factors including PC104plus, VME, PCI and cPCI and a catalogue of plug and play DIME-II modules, embedded system developers can quickly build a flexible, high performance processing system tailored to the requirements of a specific application.
