Elephants Under Human Care: The Behavior, Ecology, and Welfare of Elephants in Captivity is a one-of-a-kind resource on elephants living predominantly in zoos, as well as circus and logging camp elephants, as it draws together studies of elephant welfare within artificial environments into one comprehensive volume. Beginning with a brief history of elephants in zoos, this book delves into data and information on the behavior of elephants in captivity, covering topics such as nocturnal behavior, aggression, tool usage, and ecophysiology. Feeding ecology, population ecology, and enclosure usage is also described for readers. This book also looks at measurements for elephant welfare managements, including the analysis of locomotion, gait, obesity, and abnormal behavior. Finally, the book advises on management challenges and the future contribution of zoos to elephant conservation. Elephants Under Human Care: The Behavior, Ecology, and Welfare of Elephants in Captivity is a valuable resource for zoo biology and animal welfare researchers. This book is also useful for students and zoo professionals and managers looking for the most comprehensive data and studies on all species of elephants. Includes results of captive studies compared to biological information on wild elephants Features unique and original images of elephant behavior as they live under human care Considers future implications for welfare and conservation of elephants, both for elephants in captivity and efforts for those in the wild

Book Description :

This book draws together, for the first time, the published research on the behaviour, ecology and welfare of elephants living in zoos, circuses, logging camps and other captive environments in a single comprehensive volume. It takes a multi-disciplinary approach, considering the work of zoo biologists, animal behaviour and welfare scientists, veterinarians, philosophers, zoo educators, tourism specialists, conservation biologists, lawyers and others with a professional interest in elephants. Elephants under Human Care: The Behaviour, Ecology, and Welfare of Elephants in Captivity is a valuable resource for zoo biology and animal welfare researchers. It is also useful for students and zoo professionals and managers looking for a comprehensive guide to current research on captive elephants. Although not intended as a husbandry manual, the book discusses some of the elephant welfare standards developed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) and their relationship to current knowledge of captive elephants. Includes results of captive studies compared with field studies of wild elephants Features original images of elephant behaviour as they live and behave under human care Includes results of the author’s original research including many original photographs Considers future implications of research for the welfare and conservation of elephants, both for elephants in captivity and those living in the wild

Book Description :

In this body of research, reproductive and adrenal hormones and behavior were used to evaluate individual and group responses to physiological, social, and environmental changes in zoo-housed Asian elephants, considering factors of sex, age, and life stage. Animals experience physiological, social, and environmental changes as part of their natural history and individual life experience. Measures of both positive and negative states are needed to assess the impact of these changes at the individual and group level. Through longitudinal analyses of more than 20 years of gonadal and adrenal hormone data, we confirmed the presence of intrinsic glucocorticoid (GC) patterns associated with reproductive state in male and female Asian elephants, providing further evidence that GCs play a role in normal reproductive function. In females, circulating cortisol was higher in the follicular phase compared to the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle, and highest in lactational anestrous compared to all other reproductive states. In bulls, circulating cortisol covaried positively with testosterone and musth, as observed in previous studies of elephants and during the analogous condition of rut in other ungulates. Age-related changes in cortisol were observed in both sexes, and some individuals experienced higher rates of change in cortisol in one phase of their reproductive cycle versus another. Concentrations of GCs covaried more consistently with physiological changes than with social changes in both sexes. Overall, the elephants in these studies showed adaptive adrenal responses to change, and they also exhibited substantial individuality in adrenal response to social life events. A study conducted to monitor an elephant herd through transition to a new habitat provided further insights on habitat features that help us meet the physiological, psychological and social needs of elephants under human care, and helped identify which of those features may be most beneficial for enhancing welfare.
