Book Description :

Abstract: In this study, novel chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/SiO2 nanocomposite ENMs were prepared to improve the mechanical strength and permeation properties of ENMs. The effect of various concentrations of SiO2 in the spinning solution (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0wt %) on the morphology, fiber diameter, porosity, thermomechanical properties, and permeability of the synthesized membranes was investigated. The prepared affinity membranes were utilized for the removal of dye from colored wastewater. Incorporating SiO2, as a reinforcing agent, was found to increase the compaction resistance of the nanocomposite ENMs. With the addition of 0.5wt % of SiO2, the Young's modulus of the prepared membranes almost doubled from 0.74MPa for chitosan/PVA ENM to 1.69 for nanocomposite ENM. The major finding was that with the incorporation of 1.0wt % SiO2, a marked increase in both water permeability and dye rejection is attained. The optimized nanocomposite membrane provided 98% Direct Red 23 rejection and 1711l/m 2 h flux under 0.4bar transmembrane pressure. As a result, this study provides valuable insights into the preparation of high-performance and robust nanocomposite ENMs for the wastewater treatment. Graphical abstract: The incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles, as a reinforcing agent, increased the compressive strength or the compaction resistance of the nanocomposite electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs). The dye removal efficiency of ENMs also enhanced by increasing the SiO2 concentration in the electrospinning dope up to 1.0wt %. High reusability of the prepared membranes demonstrated that the dye removal of the nanocomposite ENMs is recoverable. Highlights: Novel nanocomposite electrospun nanofibrous membranes (ENMs) were prepared. Addition of SiO2 improved the thermomechanical properties of nanocomposite ENMs. Both water flux and dye rejection increased with the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles. Dye removal performance in the range of NF and flux in the range MF were achieved. Nanocomposite ENMs showed high antifouling and reusability property.

Book Description :

The rapid development of nanoscience enables a technology revolution that will soon impact virtually every facet of the water sector. Yet, there is still too little understanding of what nanoscience and nanotechnology is, what can it do and whether to fear it or not, even among the educated public as well as scientists and engineers from other disciplines. Despite the numerous books and textbooks available on the subject, there is a gap in the literature that bridges the space between the synthesis (conventional and more greener methods) and use (applications in the drinking water production, wastewater treatment and environmental remediation fields) of nanotechnology on the one hand and its potential environmental implications (fate and transport of nanomaterials, toxicity, Life Cycle Assessments) on the other. Nanotechnology for Water and Wastewater Treatment explores these topics with a broad-based multidisciplinary scope and can be used by engineers and scientists outside the field and by students at both undergraduate and post graduate level. Table of Contents Introduction: Nanotechnology for water and wastewater treatment: potential and limitation; Characteristics and properties of nanoparticles; Physical and chemical analysis of nanoparticles; Fate and transport of nanoparticles/nanomaterials, toxicity studies; Nanoparticles and bioremediation; Nanosorbents; Effective Phosphate Removal Using Ca-based Layered Double Hydroxide Materials; Mg(OH)2 nanoadsorbent during Treating the Low Concentration of Cr; Nano catalysts; Visible-light doped titania for water purification: nitrogen and silver doping; Doping of Pd nanocatalysts for PCB removal; The use of bimetallic nanosystems to remove POPs from soils and sediments"; Nanomaterials for disinfection and microbial control; Microbial manufactured silver nanoparticles for water disinfection; Electrospun nanofibers for Point-of-Use Water Treatment; Nanomaterials to enhance filtration; Metalic and ceramic microreactors; Enzyme-Immobilized Nanofiltration Membrane To Mitigate Biofouling Based on Quorum Quenching; Biomimetic membranes for water filtration; Nano sensors ; Functionalised graphene: a novel platform for biosensors; Lab-on-a-Chip Interferometric Biosensor Nanotechnology; Nanosensors for pathogens; Nanomanufacturing: Materials Design and Production; Green synthesis of nanoparticles and nanocatalysts; Plant-based nanoparticle manufacturing.

Book Description :

Abstract: Over the past years, the high catalytic property of electrospun nanofibers attracted more attention in the field of catalysis. Titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) electrospun nanofibers and their modifications have become the focus of the photocatalysis research owing to their high surface to volume ratio, high porosity and non-toxicity. So far, however, it has not been applied in the photocatalytic devices because the bad self-supporting is still the main drawback to prevent their practical application. Here, a novel three-dimensional porous membrane of hybrid TiO2 /bioglass, which could be adhered on different carriers as "wallpaper" only by a short time of heating, has been fabricated in this work. Though microfluidic electrospinning, the hybrid nanofibrous membrane could be divided into three thin layers according to the components of the fiber. The top layer of the hybrid nanofibrous membrane, containing 90% TiO2 in the fiber, would maintain three-dimensional interconnected porous structure with the increasing of its thickness, revealing highly photocatalytic activity. In addition, the bottom bioglass (70SiO2 ·25CaO·5P2 O5 ) nanofibrous layer of the hybrid TiO2 /bioglass membrane made the membrane adhere on different carriers firmly through heating within 5s. The hybrid membrane exhibited higher photocatalytic efficiency than the thin film of TiO2, which would be expected to be used in the preparation of photocatalytic devices.

Book Description :

Tissue engineering aims to develop biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve damaged tissue and organ functionality. To date, numerous stem cells and biomaterials have been explored for a variety of tissue and organ regeneration. The challenge for existing stem cell–based techniques is that current therapies lack controlled environments that are crucial for regulating stem cell engraftment and differentiation in vivo, because stem cells are rather sensitive to even minute changes in their environment. Micro- and nanotechnology hold great potential to fabricate biomimetic spatiotemporally controlled scaffolds as well as control stem cell behavior and fate by micro- and nanoscale cues. This book presents the latest micro- and nanotechnologies used to manipulate stem cell behaviors, which is a critical area for regenerative medicine. Moreover, it covers and details cutting-edge research in nano- and microfabrication techniques and biomaterials for the regeneration of various tissues and organs, such as bone, cartilage, craniofacial, osteochondral, muscle, bladder, cardiac, and vascular tissues.
