Book Description :

Based on the authors’ groundbreaking research, Automated EEG-Based Diagnosis of Neurological Disorders: Inventing the Future of Neurology presents a research ideology, a novel multi-paradigm methodology, and advanced computational models for the automated EEG-based diagnosis of neurological disorders. It is based on the ingenious integration of three different computing technologies and problem-solving paradigms: neural networks, wavelets, and chaos theory. The book also includes three introductory chapters that familiarize readers with these three distinct paradigms. After extensive research and the discovery of relevant mathematical markers, the authors present a methodology for epilepsy diagnosis and seizure detection that offers an exceptional accuracy rate of 96 percent. They examine technology that has the potential to impact and transform neurology practice in a significant way. They also include some preliminary results towards EEG-based diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. The methodology presented in the book is especially versatile and can be adapted and applied for the diagnosis of other brain disorders. The senior author is currently extending the new technology to diagnosis of ADHD and autism. A second contribution made by the book is its presentation and advancement of Spiking Neural Networks as the seminal foundation of a more realistic and plausible third generation neural network.

Book Description :

As information technology (IT) becomes specialized and fragmented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics have common threads and because of this, advances in one s- discipline may transmit to another. The presentation of results between different s- disciplines encourages this interchange for the advancement of IT as a whole. This volume comprises the selection of papers presented at the Second International Mega-Conference on Future Generation Information Technology (FGIT 2010), composed of the following 11 international conferences: Advanced Software Engineering and Its Applications (ASEA 2010), Bio-Science and Bio- Technology (BSBT 2010), Control and Automation (CA 2010), Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC 2010), Database Theory and Application (DTA 2010), Future Generation Communication and Networking (FGCN 2010), Grid and Distributed Computing (GDC 2010), Multimedia, Computer Graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB 2010), Security Technology (SecTech 2010), Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (SIP 2010), as well as u- and e-Service, Science and Technology (UNESST 2010). In total, 1,630 papers were submitted to FGIT 2010 from 30 countries. The submitted papers went through a rigorous reviewing process and 395 papers were accepted. Of these 395 papers, 60 were assigned to this volume. In addition, this volume contains 7 invited papers and abstracts. Of the remaining accepted papers, 269 were distributed among 8 volumes of proceedings published by Springer in the CCIS series. 66 papers were withdrawn due to technical reasons.

Book Description :

The second edition of this popular textbook continues to provide a thorough general overview of old age psychiatry for trainees, practising psychiatrists, and practitioners in other disciplines whose work brings them into contact with elderly psychiatric patients. All aspects of this nowestablished specialty are covered by a multidisciplinary team of 49 contributors.Psychiatry in the Elderly brings together up-to-date reviews of the basic sciences (epidemiology, psychology, sociology, and pathology), the principles of clinical practice, and hands-on practical advice and instruction on the clinical diagnosis and management of all the psychiatric conditions thataffect the elderly. There are general sections on basic sciences and clinical practice, and the design and provision of psychiatric services for older patients; as well as sections on specific disorders in old age psychiatry, such as depression and dementia, and the issues of sexuality, ethics andmedicolegal issues. All of the chapters in this new edition have been substantially modified and updated, while more radical changes include the addition of new chapters on the molecular biology of dementia; the development and use of instruments for psychological assessment; family therapy; the economics of providinglong term care; a carer's own perspective; mental disorders in older persons with learning disabilities; and delirium from the psychiatrist's and the geriatrician's perspective.

Book Description :

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the deposition into the brain of amyloid peptide, which originates a cascade of inflammatory events leading eventually to neuronal death. These pathological events likely occur several years before the clinical manifestation of the disease, implying that potential therapeutical interventions are currently started too late to give beneficial results. Recently, growing attention has been paid to the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), considered the prodromal phase of AD, as 80% of subjects with MCI have been shown to develop AD within 5 years. Several studies aimed to identify biological markers to differentiate between normal aging and incipient AD have been carried out, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and neuroimaging. In particular, the evaluation of CSF Amyloid beta (1-42) levels, together with tau and phospotau, are of help for recognizing early AD. Besides, a number of additional molecules are altered in CSF. Other early modifications have been observed in peripheral cells, such as fibroblasts and leukocytes, as well as in serum from patients. Biomarkers for AD represent important tools supporting the clinical diagnosis and the choice of potential therapeutic options. Moreover, they would be of great help for the selection of cohorts of homogeneous patients for clinical trials with new disease-modifying compounds. This book is aimed to give an update about MCI as prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD), to discuss the main known pathological mechanisms at the basis of AD and to describe the possible biomarkers to be used for an early diagnosis of the disease.

Book Description :

Geriatrics and geriatric psychiatry are at a historic turning point. Major growth in clinical interest and research activity has sparked new discoveries in the field. No longer are senility and depression viewed solely as a fate in growing old, an unavoidable concomitant of aging. "Comprehensive Review of Geriatric Psychiatry-II" was developed in response to the major advances in the field. As in the first edition, eminent contributors offer their collective expertise on emerging issues in the psychiatry of aging, providing mental health practitioners with a focused but comprehensive review of the field. Much of the first edition has been rewritten, revised, or updated, and new chapters have been added to reflect recent advances in theory and practice. Targeted to all mental health professionals involved in the care of elderly people, this exceptional work covers the aging process, evaluation and diagnosis, and the major psychiatric disorders typically encountered by psychiatrists who treat aging patients. Newly written material is presented on topics such as genetics, normal aging, ethnocultural and sociodemographic aspects of aging, self and experience across the second half of life, Alzheimer's disease, grief and bereavement, and geriatric consultation-liaison psychiatry. Updated information on medical-legal and ethical issues is provided. Clinicians and residents alike will find the self-assessment section, a significant part of which is new, extremely beneficial.
