"Tethered Satellite Systems (TSS) has been an ongoing project around the world for many decades. This study examined the dynamics an dcontrols of tethered satellites. The equations of motion were developed and simulated with no control and small eccentric orbits. A control law was derived by associating the Hamiltonian of the system to a Lyapunov Funciton. This control law was then simulated to demonstrate ability and robustness. The tethered system can be retrieved and deployed in a small number of orbits, and return from a perturbation quickly. Examination of a non thruster controlled system resulted in asymptotic convergence in retrieval and station keeping, but the inplane angle, orbital plane, converged during deployment. Time to complete the phases was similar to out of plane thruster controlled. The maximum eccentricities were found for retrieval and deployment when the system started at the perihelion of the orbit with a 100Km tether. Drag was added to the model because it effects the dynamics when the subsatellite is very close to earth. Most of the effects are seen in the inplane angle. At fully deployed the inplane angle was small. A Lyapunov controller for tether satellites works very well under ideal conditions. Once aerodynamics are included into the model, offsets and oscillations occur because of the new forces that unbalance the system compared to the model without drag"--Abstract.

This report deals with the following topics which are all related to the orbital injection of the SEDSAT satellite: Dynamics and Stability of Tether Oscillations after the First Cut. The dynamics of the tether after the first cut (i.e., without the Shuttle attached to it) is investigated. The tether oscillations with the free end are analyzed in order to assess the stability of the rectilinear configuration in between the two tether cuts; analysis of Unstable Modes. The unstable modes that appear for high libration angles are further investigated in order to determine their occurrences and the possible transition from bound librations to rotations; Orbital Release Strategies for SEDSAT. A parametric analysis of the orbital decay rate of the SEDSAT satellite after the two tether cuts has been carried out as a function of the following free parameters: libration amplitude at the end of deployment, deviation angle from LV at the first cut, and orbital anomaly at the second cut. The values of these parameters that provide a minimum orbital decay rate of the satellite (after the two cuts) have been computed; and Dynamics and Control of SEDSAT. The research completed for this NASA Graduate Student Research Program Fellowship sought to enhance the current state-of-the-art dynamic models and control laws for Momentum Exchange Electrodynamic Reboost satellite systems by utilizing command generation, specifically Input Shaping. The precise control of tethered spacecraft with flexible appendages is extremely difficult. The complexity is magnified many times when the satellite must interact with other satellites as in a momentum exchange via a tether. The Momentum Exchange Electronic Reboost Tether (MXER) concept encapsulates all of these challenging tasks [l]. Input Shaping is a command generation technique that allows flexible spacecraft to move without inducing residual vibration [2], limit transient deflection [3] and utilize fuel-efficient actuation [4]. Input shaping is implemented by convolving a sequence of impulses, known as the input shaper, with a desired system command to produce a shaped input that is then used to drive the system. This process is demonstrated in Figure 1. The shaped command is then use to drive the system without residual vibration while meeting many other performance specifications. The completed work developed tether control algorithms for retrieval. A simple model of the tether response has been developed and command shaping was implemented to minimize unwanted dynamics. A model of a flexible electrodynamic tether has been developed to investigate the tether s response during reboost. Command shaping techniques have been developed to eliminate the tether oscillations and reduce the tether s deflection to pre-specified levels during reboost. Additionally, a model for the spin-up of a tethered system was developed. This model was used in determining the parameters for optimization the resulting angular velocity. Robertson, Michael J. Over the last few decades, researchers have realized many potential applications of tethered satellite systems that include atmospheric data collection, placing satellites from low earth orbits into higher orbits, capture of non-functional satellites for service and repair, satellite reboost and deorbiting. The deployment/retrieval dynamics of such systems due to gravity gradient forces is highly nonlinear in nature. Also, due to orbital motion, the longitudinal and transverse motions are coupled. With only boundary control, the tethered satellite system forms a highly underactuated system. In this thesis, we derive and validate the deployment dynamics of such a system following two different basic approaches---Newton's laws and Hamilton's principle. The complexity of the system is studied in an incremental nature using three different models. The problem of controlled deployment/retrieval is approached using a partial feedback linearizing controller. The problem of station keeping is tackled in a more novel way by developing a boundary controller based on the linearization of the infinite dimensional tether system around radial relative equilibrium configuration. Lyapunov function is used to study the stability of the controller on the linearized system. Effectiveness of controllers developed for deployment and station keeping are verified through simulations. We have also studied the dynamics of tethered satellite systems in the presence of electrodynamic forces due to the magnetic field of the earth. We propose a novel method to the control the tether configurations in the presence of electrodynamic forces.
