With seasonal crowds flocking to its sandy beaches, lively downtown shops, and the Berry Basket, a berry emporium with something for everyone, the lakeshore village of Oriole Point is ripe for summer fun—and murder. Much has changed for Marlee Jacob since she returned to Oriole Point, Michigan, three years ago. Between running the Berry Basket, dodging local gossip, and whipping up strawberry muffins, smoothies, and margaritas to celebrate the town’s first annual Strawberry Moon Bash, the twenty-nine-year-old hardly has time for her fiancé, let alone grim memories of her old life in New York . . . But unfortunately for Marlee, Oriole Point is muddled with secrets of its own. First her friend Natasha disappears after an ominous dream. Next the seediest man in town threatens to crush her business. Then an unknown person nearly kills her on the night of the Bash. When she discovers a dead body while searching for Natasha, Marlee realizes she’ll have to foil a killer’s plot herself—before the past permanently stains her future. Strawberry picking at its finest. Dying for Strawberries has it all. Delicious small town ambience, tasty cast of characters, and a plot so satisfying you'll want to return for another serving of the Berry Basket Mysteries.” —Gail Oust, author of the Spice Shop Mysteries “Whoever said small town life is dull never visited Oriole Point, Michigan! Book Description :

This lively, accessible book is the first to explore Victorian literature through scent and perfume, presenting an extensive range of well-known and unfamiliar texts in intriguing and imaginative new ways that make us re-think literature's relation with the senses. Concentrating on aesthetic and decadent authors, Scents and Sensibility introduces a rich selection of poems, essays, and fiction, exploring these texts with reference to both the little-known cultural history of perfume use and the appreciation of natural fragrance in Victorian Britain. It shows how scent and perfume are used to convey not merely moods and atmospheres but the nuances of the aesthete or decadent's carefully cultivated identity, personality, or sensibility. A key theme is the emergence of the olfactif, the cultivated individual with a refined sense of smell, influentially represented by the poet and critic Algernon Charles Swinburne, who is emulated by a host of canonical and less well-known aesthetic and decadent successors such as Walter Pater, Edmund Gosse, John Addington Symonds, Lafcadio Hearn, Michael Field, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Symons, Mark André Raffalovich, Theodore Wratislaw, and A. Mary F. Robinson. This book explores how scent and perfume pervade the work of these authors in many different ways, signifying such diverse things as style, atmosphere, influence, sexuality, sensibility, spirituality, refinement, individuality, the expression of love and poetic creativity, and the aura of personality, dandyism, modernity, and memory. A coda explores the contrasting twentieth-century responses of Virginia Woolf and Compton Mackenzie to the scent of Victorian literature.

Book Description :

An ethnographic exploration of technoscientific immortality Immortality has long been considered the domain of religion. But immortality projects have gained increasing legitimacy and power in the world of science and technology. With recent rapid advances in biology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, secular immortalists hope for and work toward a future without death. On Not Dying is an anthropological, historical, and philosophical exploration of immortality as a secular and scientific category. Based on an ethnography of immortalist communities—those who believe humans can extend their personal existence indefinitely through technological means—and an examination of other institutions involved at the end of life, Abou Farman argues that secular immortalism is an important site to explore the tensions inherent in secularism: how to accept death but extend life; knowing the future is open but your future is finite; that life has meaning but the universe is meaningless. As secularism denies a soul, an afterlife, and a cosmic purpose, conflicts arise around the relationship of mind and body, individual finitude and the infinity of time and the cosmos, and the purpose of life. Immortalism today, Farman argues, is shaped by these historical and culturally situated tensions. Immortalist projects go beyond extending life, confronting dualism and cosmic alienation by imagining (and producing) informatic selves separate from the biological body but connected to a cosmic unfolding. On Not Dying interrogates the social implications of technoscientific immortalism and raises important political questions. Whose life will be extended? Will these technologies be available to all, or will they reproduce racial and geopolitical hierarchies? As human life on earth is threatened in the Anthropocene, why should life be extended, and what will that prolonged existence look like?

Book Description :

This book examines our oft emotional relationship with food; the way science has been used and misused by those who govern, provide advice to the public, or try to sell food; and why we tend to believe the statements about healthy eating that we wish were true, rather than those which are true. The book discusses and challenges how the science and knowledge of food, health and nutrition are derived; why knowledge can appear valid even when it is not; how the misleading use of descriptors of risk has been responsible for the strangest ideas about eating in the history of humankind, perverted our approach to the role of food in our lives, and engendered hysterical attitudes; and why public health policy is subject to the whims of activists and lobbyists, and how it becomes dogma that is highly resistant to change despite new evidence. The role of the media and how, and why, science is “modified” and sometimes “falsified”, and why how, not just what, we eat may be crucial are also examined. The book also explores those foods that come ready loaded with poisonous compounds and carcinogens. The conclusions presented here are firmly based upon an extensive bibliography, and a detailed and trustworthy re-examination of key pieces of research that have been influential in setting the present food agenda. The text is set within an historical context dating back to the 16th century, and illustrates how it is that we have always known what we must eat and do to be healthy. The book is written in an approachable and engaging style for all readers regardless of pre-existing scientific knowledge. It is intended for all who have an interest in their food and health, and for students of the food, nutrition, medical, and social sciences.

After the hottest summer for years the wet autumn that follows is one that Chief Superintendent Charmian Daniels will look back on as the worst of her life. The success of her last case has proved a double-edged sword, for while it has brought her promotion and respect from some colleagues, in others it has caused deep resentment and made her some bitter enemies. Then a young girl, who called herself Nella Fisher, is found dead outside the home of two of Charmian's closest friends. Nella had been visiting them for some time, warning them of danger from a person who hates them. But before she will reveal that person's identity she demands payment, so the women send her away. Now Nella has been murdered - is she a victim of the watcher's anger, or has she pushed the patience of Charmian's friends too far? Charmian's feelings of unease strengthen when the hatred shown in the threatening letters and mail she receives fever pitch. And she has the feeling she's being watched. Not that she's seen anyone, but the lingering smell of cigar smoke around her house tells her that someone has been there. Even the police protection she reluctantly accepts can't put her completely at her ease. After all, there are some nasty elements in this case. Police corruption being one of them. Braving the threats against her life and wary even of her closest friends and colleagues, Charmian persists with her hunt for the killer. A look into her past leads her to confront him face to face, but justice is not done until Charmian has suffered almost the ultimate humiliation . . . Jennie Melville's new Charmian Daniels mystery is a strong and devious book which keeps the reader guessing until the last venomous twist.
