Book Description :

Dust Explosion Dynamics focuses on the combustion science that governs the behavior of the three primary hazards of combustible dust: dust explosions, flash fires, and smoldering. It explores the use of fundamental principles to evaluate the magnitude of combustible dust hazards in a variety of settings. Models are developed to describe dust combustion phenomena using the principles of thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and chemical kinetics. Simple, tractable models are described first and compared with experimental data, followed by more sophisticated models to help with future challenges. Dr. Ogle introduces the reader to just enough combustion science so that they may read, interpret, and use the scientific literature published on combustible dusts. This introductory text is intended to be a practical guide to the application of combustible dust models, suitable for both students and experienced engineers. It will help you to describe the dynamics of explosions and fires involving dust and evaluate their consequences which in turn will help you prevent damage to property, injury and loss of life from combustible dust accidents. Demonstrates how the fundamental principles of combustion science can be applied to understand the ignition, propagation, and extinction of dust explosions Explores fundamental concepts through model-building and comparisons with empirical data Provides detailed examples to give a thorough insight into the hazards of combustible dust as well as an introduction to relevant scientific literature

Book Description :

The interest of the media in dust explosions increased considerably following two major grain-elevator disasters in the United States in 1979. However, these were not isolated incidents and were statistically unusual only in the high loss of life involved. Any oxidizable material that is dispersed in fine powder form may be explosive, and ignition sources with sufficient energy to ignite a dust cloud are easily produced in normal industrial processing. Dust fires and minor incidents are not uncommon in many industries, but fortunately the combination of events and circumstances that must coincide for a large-scale explosion arise only rarely. Nevertheless, this is often more by luck than by good management and many potentially hazardous situations are common in industry. An explosive dust cloud and the circumstances in which it can ignite are not as simple to define as the equivalent situation in gases or flammable vapors. A large number of definitions and experimental tests have been devised to characterize the explosibility of dusts and ignition sources. The aim of this book is to provide a guide describing conditions in industry that could lead to dust explosions and the means to avoid them. Ignition sources and the way in which they can arise in powder processing are discussed and illustrated by case histories of reported incidents. The methods by which the potential hazards of a process or product can be evaluated are described, with special attention paid to the interpretation of the results of the different experimental methods.

Book Description :

This Bureau of Mines paper is an introduction to the subject of dust explosions. The phenomena associated with the occurrence of dust explosions are described in general terms, with several specific examples of dusts that react so rapidly and exothermically with air that destructive pressures are generated when they are dispersed and ignited. The accompanying gas-dynamic phenomena are also considered in some detail in terms of rates of pressure rise, speed of flame propagation, confinement, turbulence, and propagation dynamics. The explosion probabilities in any given plant or facility can be quantified in terms of the state of dispersion of the dust, its lean limit concentration, and its ignitability characteristics (thermal, electrical, and chemical). Dust explosions are contrasted with gas explosions in terms of those factors. Other variables considered for the dusts include volatility, particle size, oxygen content of the dispersing "quo;air,"quo; initial temperature, initial pressure, the presence of added fuel gases, and inerting or extinguishing requirements. Data to be discussed include laboratory measurements and full-scale test results; phenomena to be considered include both the fundamental and the practical.

Book Description :

Of late the demands of industry in creating new composite and functional materials with present properties stimulated an increased interest to the investigation of processes which occur in the detonation technologies of complex chemical composition with an additive of disperse particles. The collection includes a series of papers presented at the 3d International Conference "Lavrentyev Readings on Mathematics, Mechanics, and Physics" (Novosibirsk, 1990),was held by the Hydrodynamics Institute under the support of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences to stimulate the international cooperation of the leading international centers. In the framework of this Conference the Round Table seminar was held by Prof. A. Borissov and Prof. V. Mi trofanov devoted to "Dynamic Structure of Detonation in Gaseous and Dispersed Media". The idea to hold such Round Table was supported by Chairman of Organizing Committee academician Prof. V.Titov from Hydrodynamics Institute, and academician Prof. V. Nakoryakov and also his Institute of Thermophysics. The main ideas discussed at the Round Table were presented in the form of papers which reflected present situation of the problem of dynamic structure of the detonation waves in gaseous and dispersed media. The basic experimental facts concerning of complicated mul ti dimensional non-stationary structure both of the detonation wave and its front surface, generation of the cell structure, the effect of transverse waves, obstacles, channel geometry etc. on the transition from dynamic regime to stationary structure are represented in the fist three papers.

Book Description :

This handy volume is a ready “go to” reference forthe chemical engineer, plant manager, process engineer, or chemistworking in industrial settings where dust explosions could be aconcern, such as the process industries, coal industry, metalindustry, and others. Though dust explosions have been aroundsince the Earth first formed, and they have been studied andwritten about since the 1500s, they are still an ongoing concernand occur almost daily somewhere in the world, from bakeries tofertilizer plants. Dust explosions can have devastating consequences, and, recently, there have been new industrial standards and guidelinesthat reflect safer, more reasonable methods for dealing withmaterials to prevent dust explosions and resultant fires. This book not only presents these new developments for engineersand managers, but it offers a thorough and deep coverage of thesubject, starting with a complete overview of dust, how it forms, when it is in danger of exploding, and how this risk can bemitigated. There is also a general coverage of explosions andthe environments that foster them. Further chapters cover individual industries, such as metal andcoal, and there is an appendix that outlines best practices forpreventing dust explosions and fire and how these risks can besystematically mitigated by these implementations. There isalso a handy glossary of terms for easy access, not only for theveteran engineer or chemist, but for the student or newhire. This ready reference is one of the most useful texts that anengineer or chemist could have at their side. With so manyaccidents still occurring in industry today and so many hazards, this volume pinpoints the most common and easiest ways for theengineer to go about his daily business safely, efficiently, andprofitably, with no extraneous tables or theoreticaltreatises. A must have for any engineer, scientist, orchemist working with materials that could result in dust explosionsor fire.
