Through every family run memories which bind it together – despite everything. The Tulls of Baltimore are no exception. Abandoned by her salesman husband, Pearl is left to bring up her three children alone – Cody, a flawed devil, Ezra, a flawed saint, and Jenny, errant and passionate. Book Description :

No other writer captures like Anne Tyler, with acerbic affection and compassionate clarity, the shifts and defences of the average family struggling to keep life under control. This first omnibus edition of three full-length novels, all set in the respectable Baltimore streets she has made so particularly her own, encompasses the range of eccentricities and compromises to which they are driven. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant follows the disintegration and eventual reaffirmation of the Tull family – fierce, embittered Pearl, left by Beck to raise handsome, thrusting Cody, Jenny, the pediatrician losing herself in devotion to others, and docile Ezra, whose attempts to unite them all around a table at his eccentric Homesick Restaurant are the focus of their differences and their bond. In The Accidental Tourist, Macon – a man of habit and routine, who writes guide books for businessmen who hate to leave home – is confronted by chaos in his own family life. Between aching sadness and glorious absurdity, Macon hesitantly emerges from his sage cocoon into the vibrant, unpredictable world of the outrageous Muriel... And Breathing Lessons, which won the Pulitzer Prize, lays bare the anatomy of a marriage. On the round trip to a friend’s funeral, Maggie and Ira Moran make detours literal and metaphorical – into the lives of grown children, old friends, total strangers and their own past – and, despite Ira’s disappointments and Maggie’s optimistic determination to rearrange life as she would like it to be, an old married couple fall in love all over again.

Book Description :

Many critics have determined Anne Tyler to be one of today's most talented writers of American fiction. The success of her novels relies mainly upon her character development and her portrayal of the modern American family. In her three latest novels: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, The Accidental Tourist, and Breathing Lessons, she effectively describes the joys and hardships that an ordinary family endures. To support her descriptions, she uses the four common themes of the attraction of opposite personalities, the need for close relationships, the attempt to escape from but inevitable return to an imperfect family, and nostalgia of the past. These themes, in conjunction with the various relationships and milestones of life present in her novels, lead to the conclusion that the strength of the family unit is of the utmost importance to the lives of its members.

Book Description :

This dissertation studies the theme of time in Anne Tyler's fiction and centres specifically on how Jeremy Pauling in Celestial Navigation, Justine Peck in Searching for Caleb, Cody Tull in Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, and Macon Leary in The Accidental Tourist respond to the losses brought about by the passage of time. The introduction establishes similarities between Tyler's emphasis on change, the passage of time, and reactions to change, and Paul Fraisse's focus on temporally organized behaviour. the three interrelated perspectives of the past, the present, and the future. The temporal horizon is used in this dissertation as a key to interpreting the temporal awareness of Tyler's characters and their behaviour in adapting to change. It is often memories of crises, such as unexpected death or desertion, which predominate the protagonist's temporal outlook at the expense of the present and the future. protagonists is to free themselves from the past and discover a greater significance in the present and the future. With the exception of Jeremy Pauling, they finally succeed in altering the hold of the past, and as a consequence of this shift of vision a better balance between their three temporal perspectives is achieved. dissertation, indicates that the majority of her protagonists in the end reach a moment of buoyancy when, at least temporarily in control of time, they apparently trust in the possibility of altering their situations. Because of this anticipation they also modify their behaviour and take steps to give their futures a new direction. While it may be an open question where the passage of time may lead them, the thesis indicates that in many of Anne Tyler's novels the endings seem suggestive of affirmative change.
