Book Description :

"Silly," "stupid," "irrational," "simple." "Wicked," "hateful," "obstinate," "anti-social." "Extravagant," "perverse." The Roman world rendered harsh judgments upon early Christianity--including branding Christianity "new." Novelty was no Roman religious virtue. Nevertheless, as Larry W. Hurtado shows in Destroyer of the gods, Christianity thrived despite its new and distinctive features and opposition to them. Unlike nearly all other religious groups, Christianity utterly rejected the traditional gods of the Roman world. Christianity also offered a new and different kind of religious identity, one not based on ethnicity. Christianity was distinctively a "bookish" religion, with the production, copying, distribution, and reading of texts as central to its faith, even preferring a distinctive book-form, the codex. Christianity insisted that its adherents behave differently: unlike the simple ritual observances characteristic of the pagan religious environment, embracing Christian faith meant a behavioral transformation, with particular and novel ethical demands for men. Unquestionably, to the Roman world, Christianity was both new and different, and, to a good many, it threatened social and religious conventions of the day. In the rejection of the gods and in the centrality of texts, early Christianity obviously reflected commitments inherited from its Jewish origins. But these particular features were no longer identified with Jewish ethnicity and early Christianity quickly became aggressively trans-ethnic--a novel kind of religious movement. Its ethical teaching, too, bore some resemblance to the philosophers of the day, yet in contrast with these great teachers and their small circles of dedicated students, early Christianity laid its hard demands upon all adherents from the moment of conversion, producing a novel social project. Christianity's novelty was no badge of honor. Called atheists and suspected of political subversion, Christians earned Roman disdain and suspicion in equal amounts. Yet, as Destroyer of the gods demonstrates, in an irony of history the very features of early Christianity that rendered it distinctive and objectionable in Roman eyes have now become so commonplace in Western culture as to go unnoticed. Christianity helped destroy one world and create another.

Book Description :

Before the New Testament or the creeds of the church were written, the devotional practices of the earliest Christians indicate that they worshipped Jesus alongside the Father. Larry W. Hurtado has been one of the leading scholars on early Christology for decades. In Honoring the Son: Jesus in Earliest Christian Devotional Practice, Hurtado helps readers understand early Christology by examining not just what early Christians believed or wrote about Jesus, but what their devotional practices tell us about the place of Jesus in early Christian worship. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of early Christian origins and scholarship on New Testament Christology, Hurtado examines the distinctiveness of early Christian worship by comparing it to both Jewish worship patterns and worship practices within the broader Roman-era religious environment. He argues that the inclusion of the risen Jesus alongside the Father in early Christian devotional practices was a distinct and unique religious phenomenon within its ancient context. Additionally, Hurtado demonstrates that this remarkable development was not invented decades after the resurrection of Christ as some scholars once claimed. Instead, the New Testament suggests that Jesus-followers, very quickly after the resurrection of Christ, began to worship the Son alongside the Father. Honoring the Son offers a look into the worship habits of the earliest Christians to understand the place of Jesus in early Christian devotion.

Book Description :

Polycarp, a destroyer of our gods, is not a typical novel as it illustrates through the life of a pastor named Polycarp how God forms and fashions his message in our lives. It is a story built on the four cornerstones of discipleship: faith, obedience, spiritual desire, and godly virtue. God establishes our faith and guides us into and through the struggles of obedience. Obedience awakens joyous, spiritual desires in our heart that mature us into godly and virtuous people. Polycarp was a prominent second-century Church Father and pastor of the church of Smyrna. He was born into slavery, purchased as a young boy, and raised by a godly woman in Ephesus. He, along with several others, became leaders in the church after the death of the Apostles. According to tradition, Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John. Little is known of Polycarp's life and ministry except for a few reverent thoughts shared by his disciple, Irenaeus, and other church historians. His letter to the Philippian church has survived to this day and has been included in this novel, along with the accounts of his death. His life and ministry became a threat to self-glory seekers and those lusting for Caesar's favor. When the ambitious Quadratus, the Proconsul of Rome, tried to tame the God-centered allegiance of the venerable pastor with a threat of death, Polycarp responded; "For eighty-six years I have served the Lord and never has he treated me wrongfully. How can I dare dishonor him now?" Polycarp, a destroyer of our gods, is a gripping novel written in the form of a historical narrative. This dramatic story leads the reader in discovering how God takes simple and ordinary people to destroy the gods of men and magnify his glory in a dark and sinful world. While most novels carry you along by emotion and imagination, this one will inspire you to get out into the fray of your own battles and discover the lessons that promote spiritual growth.

Book Description :

The Buddha answers all questions that a scientist like Stephen Hawking has in his mind. • Two beginning-less, self-existent entities are- the Universe and the Buddha Field. At high energy level both covert in to each other. The Buddha Field gives birth to physical and psychic particles (souls). At high energy level, a soul converts in to the Buddha Field. • Mass is of two kinds. Positive mass is due to souls. A soul is cause of dark matter. • Gravitational force is repulsive in nature between two souls, attractive between matters. • Outer region of the Universe is dark because here beings are without material bodies. Here TIME does exist BUT without SPACE. Psychic matter is the cause of Expanding Universe. • God’s atom does exist. All heavenly bodies including black holes are abodes of beings. • Stars are born due to gravitational instability in the Orion Nebula caused by God. Number of God is uncountable in the Universe. • Very soon, the world will see all religions (barring Buddhism), Marxism and all other Wrong Views, dying of natural death. • I have dedicated this book to Stephen Hawking, one of the brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein.

Book Description :

According to the early writings of the Shaiva tradition--still alive in India and dating back at least 6,000 years--the arbitrary ideologies and moralistic religions of modern society signal the last days of humanity heading toward destruction. This prediction is only a fragment of the vast knowledge of Shaiva wisdom, author Alain Danielou as assimilated and reviewed essential concepts of the Shaiva philosophy and its predictions. Clearly expressed in the ancient teachings, these concepts are in accord with, yet surpass, the boldest scientific speculations about consciousness, time, the nature of life and matter, and the history and destiny of the human race. Inherent in this body of knowledge is an understanding of the cycles of creation and destruction which, in conjunction with astronomical phases, determine the life span of the species. Since 1939, humankind has been in the twilight of the Kali Yuga age, or at the end of a cycle. The impending cataclysm, Danielou explains, is brought on by our own errors, and its date will be determined by our present and future actions. While the Gods Play examines how the visionaries of ancient times defined our rose in creation. It explains why and how we have abandoned this role, and reflects on what action can be taken to consciously and creatively influence our own destiny. Included are chapters on The Religion of Nature and The Religion of the City, The Transmigrant Body, Sexual Rites, the Castes, Sacrifice, Magical Powers, Monastic Orders, and Forestalling the Final Day.

Excerpt: Shiva (also Siva) (pronounced; Sanskrit:,; IPA: meaning "Auspicious one"), is a major Hindu deity, and the Destroyer or transformer of the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity of the primary aspects of the divine. In the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism, Shiva is seen as the Supreme Being. In the Smarta tradition, he is regarded as one of the five primary forms of God. Followers of Hinduism who focus their worship upon Shiva are called Shaivites or Shaivas (Sanskrit ). Shaivism, along with traditions that focus on Vishnu and traditions that focus on the goddess are three of the most influential denominations in Hinduism. Shiva is usually worshipped in the abstract form of Shiva linga. In images, he is generally represented as immersed in deep meditation or dancing the Tandava upon Maya, the demon of ignorance in his manifestation of Nataraja, the lord of the dance. A statue of Shiva on Delhi-Gurgaon HighwayThe Sanskrit word Shiva (Devanagari:, ) is an adjective meaning "auspicious, kind, gracious." As a proper name it means "The Auspicious One," used as a name for Rudra. In simple English transliteration it is written either as Shiva or Siva. The adjective, meaning "auspicious," is used as an attributive epithet not particularly of Rudra, but of several other Vedic deities. The Sanskrit word means "relating to the god Shiva," and this term is the Sanskrit name both for one of the principal sects of Hinduism and for a member of that sect. It is used as an adjective to characterize certain beliefs and practices, such as Shaivism. Adi Sankara, in his interp... More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=28849

Book Description :

The Gods of Entropy and the Fifth Yin follows Dyfed Lucifer, the only descendant of the multi-dimensional “Hyperborean Masters of the Little Known Universe” to be born on an “earth” that has a history remarkably similar to ours. His mission is to reduce the suffering of humans (the hoi polloi – the fuzz on the peach and the salt of the Earth) and give them the tools to think independently. Standing in the way of Dyfed’s mission are the Haploids, the world’s executive power elite who captain almost every ship of state. These Haploids are the acolytes of myth and responsible for cults, political ideology fallacies, and a corporate establishment that keeps the hoi polloi slaves to debt. Thankfully, as an immortal, Dyfed has time on his hands for this epic quest that extends from early history to a gloomy future that (despite the author’s disclaimer) bears a striking resemblance to the world at large today. Witty, sagacious, and downright spicy, The Gods of Entropy combines satire and surrealism to hold a mirror up to our own civilization that will make readers alternatively chortle and gasp, and most importantly, reflect.
