Little-brother antics have never been so endearing -- or true to life! David Shannon's beloved character in his bestselling book No, David! captures the attention and hearts of young children as few characters can. Readers relish David's exuberance, defiance, and wildly energetic curiosity, and when there's trouble, you can bet "David did it!" Now he's taunting his older brother by eating his Halloween candy, making a bathroom mess, and following him up the tree house. "You're too little!" won't stop David's tricks in this all-time "read it again" favorite. With millions of copies in print and four sequels, No, David! hit the ground running in 1998 and was a Caldecott Honor Book, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book, and a classic for 20 years. Based on a book the author wrote and illustrated when he was five, David captures the timeless no-no's familiar to every child. Grow Up, David! is nothing short of exhilarating.

Book Description :

"A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book Description :

"Over the course of a career that stretched from the early 1920s through the late 1970s, David E. Lilienthal became a larger-than-life symbol of American liberalism. A founding director of the Tennessee Valley Authority who later served as the first chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, he shared in the great triumphs of the New Deal and Fair Deal eras, as well as in the disappointments that came with the West's attempts to spread its values abroad. This book, the first full biography of Lilienthal, explores the public and private dimensions of the man and, in so doing, illuminates the promise and limitations of the American liberal dream in the twentieth century." "As a public figure, Lilienthal was controversial: outspoken, articulate, charismatic, and sometimes ruthless in pursuit of his goals. Yet, in his work with the TVA and the AEC, he displayed a strong commitment to administrative responsibility and openness in governmental policy making and was instrumental in promoting a sense of public service and purpose in both agencies. After 1950, Lilienthal became an active internationalist, striving to create models for development in Third World venues as widely separated as Central Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Through his visionary Development and Resources Corporation, he established extensive ties with leaders of every stripe, including the Shah of Iran, various Latin American presidents, and, in his own country, Lyndon B. Johnson." "The Lilienthal story is one of paradoxes and contradictions in human nature, of an enormous ego yoked with good intentions and a humane spirit. As this book demonstrates in compelling detail, the liberal dream that Lilienthal embodied worked at home but not abroad. In contrast to his victories on the domestic front, Lilienthal's efforts in overseas arenas often failed tragically - born as they were of an inability to understand that the political, economic, and social realities of an Iran or a Vietnam were far different from those of his own land."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Author : David Wolpe
Publisher : Yale University Press

ISBN : 0300210167

Book Description :

Of all the figures in the Bible, David arguably stands out as the most perplexing and enigmatic. He was many things: a warrior who subdued Goliath and the Philistines; a king who united a nation; a poet who created beautiful, sensitive verse; a loyal servant of God who proposed the great Temple and founded the Messianic line; a schemer, deceiver, and adulterer who freely indulged his very human appetites. David Wolpe, whom Newsweek called “the most influential rabbi in America,” takes a fresh look at biblical David in an attempt to find coherence in his seemingly contradictory actions and impulses. The author questions why David holds such an exalted place in history and legend, and then proceeds to unravel his complex character based on information found in the book of Samuel and later literature. What emerges is a fascinating portrait of an exceptional human being who, despite his many flaws, was truly beloved by God.

Book Description :

David Kellogg Lewis (1941-2001) was one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. He made significant contributions to almost every area of analytic philosophy including metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science, and set the agenda for various debates in these areas which carry on to this day. In several respects he remains a contemporary figure, yet enough time has now passed for historians of philosophy to begin to study his place in twentieth century thought. His philosophy was constructed and refined not just through his published writing, but also crucially through his life-long correspondence with fellow philosophers, including leading figures such as D.M. Armstrong, Saul Kripke, W.V. Quine, J.J.C. Smart, and Peter van Inwagen. His letters formed the undercurrent of his published work and became the medium through which he proposed many of his well-known theories and discussed a range of philosophical topics in depth. A selection of his vast correspondence over a 40-year period is presented here across two volumes. As metaphysics is arguably where Lewis made his greatest contribution, this forms the focus of Volume 1. Arranged under the broad areas of Causation, Modality, and Ontology, the letters offer an organic story of the origins, development, breadth, and depth of his metaphysics in its historical context, as well as a glimpse into the influence of his many interlocutors. This volume will be an indispensable resource for contemporary metaphysics and for those interested in the Lewisian perspective.

Book Description :

Most people who have taken a biology course in the past 50 years are familiar with the work of David Lack, but few remember his name. Almost all general biology texts produced during that period have a figure showing the beak size differences among the finches of the Galapagos Islands from Lack's 1947 classic, Darwin's Finches. Lack's pioneering conclusions in Darwin's Finches mark the beginning of a new scientific discipline, evolutionary ecology. Tim Birkhead, in his acclaimed book, The Wisdom of Birds, calls Lack the 'hero of modern ornithology.' Who was this influential, yet relatively unknown man? The Life of David Lack, Father of Evolutionary Ecology provides an answer to that question based on Ted Anderson's personal interviews with colleagues, family members and former students as well as material in the extensive Lack Archive at Oxford University.
